  1. OK, final report.

It turns out that the SCB withdrawal slip includes a power of attorney (in Thai), so it can be used sort of like a check.

I had to send a trusted friend in Thailand a signed copy of my passport, signed withdrawal slips (I sent 3, which he had earlier sent me) and the ORIGINAL bank book.  SCB branch also said they may verify by a Line video call.

Well sent all, my friend was a long time SCB customer known to the branch manager, so no Line call was needed.  The account was brought to zero by paying him and he immediately wired the money to me.

  2. I departed in February 2020, right before the country froze up. I had an SCB account with about bt5000.  My ATM card is blocked (forgot PIN, tried too many times.)

I received a legal settlement into the account a month or so ago.  It is now a material amount of money.

When I call SCB call center, they say only way is to come back to Thailand.

So, there has got to be a way to close the account from outside Thailand.  For example, what happens to the account of a decedent?  There must be some way using POA, etc. to close the account.

First off, the new construction going in is nothing to do with Pattaya. It comes under Sattahip jurisdiction. If you want to see the plans, go to Sattahip City Hall.
I will make it easy for you though. Two 57 storey Luxury Condo blocks, 2 hotels (1 a branded hotel, the other a 'Themed' hotel) plus the biggest Iconsiam shopping mall yet undertaken. That is the first phase. Plans for the second phase haven't yet been released. CP hold huge parcels of land in the area.
This development has nothing whatsoever to do with the Marina Golden Bay development which comes under Pattaya jurisdiction and is being built in the area of Thepprasit rd

Makes sense, although the area doesn’t need more condos. CP probably knows better.

as long as they have a grocery store I will be happy!

  4. I own a condo in NaJomtien. I arrive on August 10 on Visa exempt.

Just for giggles, I will take a copy of my chanote, passport, TM6, pix of condo, etc., and go register for a TM30 at Jomtien Immigration. I don't plan on having any interaction with immigration this trip, but you never know.

If I could speak Thai, I would bribe a bus driver to bring a bus full of Chinese tourists staying at an unlicensed hotel to immigration to register for TM30s, just to gum up the gears.

For the tourists, it would probably be more entertaining than the Floating Market.

  5. I am only here a couple of times a year, so this is what I do.  If you are a full-time expat, just pick an auspicious holiday for the folks that make your life easier.

The security guys in my condo cart all my shopping/household goods/etc. from my car to my unit and salute me. I pay them at least 30-60 Baht per trip as it is worth it.

Cheerful wait staff at restaurant always 10%, unless service is charged at 10%, then nothing to <5%. I also tell them service was good and thanks.

Grumpy and phone -obsessed wait staff, etc., nothing.

Condo cleaning staff-Bt 1000 at the end of my stay of a month or so, paid to "pit boss" with witnesses so she shares it. Front desk girls/staff Bt 100-200 each at the end of my visit.

Competent workmen for small deliveries/installations/repairs at my condo Bt100 and up. (I had two guys who came from iSpa in Bangkok to fix a five year old shower door gasket and charged me nothing--They got Bt500. I should have given them more.)

Golf caddies--Bt500 as I book in advance and get the girl I want.  Where I am assigned a caddie, Bt300 if they are barely competent, Bt500 if they meet my standards.Girls at front desk of club who handle my caddie bookings, etc., Bt100-200 at end of my visit. Locker room attendant who pours me a glass of cold water after my round and before my shower, 20-50 Baht.

I really don't care if they look at me as an ATM. If they can fake it to my standards, so be it.

I have to say I am recognized by restaurant wait staff even if I haven't visited in a year or so.  They always have a friendly smile and direct me to a nice table, and an occasional freebie drink or appetizer. Needless to say, I don't go back to places where the food or service was not good.

  6. For a tourist visa, you will need a ticket out of Thailand within 60 days of arrival.  Extensions are at the discretion of immigration. You will need the confirmed departure within 60 days to get your Tourist visa.

If you are going 90 days plus, I would suggest 60 day single entry tourist visa, with a trip to a neighboring country for a day or so, then return on visa exempt, with a ticket out in 30 days, then maybe extend and get another ticket for maybe 120 days in total. Airline enforcement is inconsistent (except on flights from the US, where they follow the rules).

Maybe you will decide to cancel/abandon the flights and apply for an extension before your 30/60 days runs out.

Further, US departure airlines (UA, KE, DL) don't really understand the visa rules at check in, so I would suggest that you have the ticket out in 30 days if visa exempt or 60 days if on tourist visa, or expect to spend an exciting, fun-filled and stressful hour explaining to them that return tickets are not required for tourist visas, which explanation and reference to the ITAA posted rules they may or may not accept. Plus, they are professionals in rules and you are a rookie. Or, you can try to book a cheap AirAsia ticket on your phone from the airport. Best of luck to you and the Red Sox!

Thai embassy DC does not answer phone or email, so unless you drop off at an honorary consul or official consulate, give it a month. Use USPS tracking to lessen the stress. (To be fair, Thai embassy DC did call and leave a message when I forgot to include a stamped return envelope with my last application.)

  7. Pointless!

If you are on a lease or own a condo, make a TM  30  report each day you think about being somewhere else. Just drop by Jomtien immigration on the way to golf, or Soi 6, or wherever! Jomtien made it easy--they even have a separate line.

A filing of a TM30 to immigration is like chicken soup: It can't hurt.  Maybe if they got 10,000 TM30s per day they could get consistent.  Maybe every tourist should file a TM30 every time they move, just in case the hotel doesn't file one. It seems they fine folks when they apply for an extension. Thus, file TM30s all the time or never apply for an extension. Always insist on a receipt or note that filing is unnecessary.

Mass civil compliance with a an inconsistently enforced law will result in change. Bury them with paper.

On the road out of Hue Yai going east before the 331.

On the Phoenix Road going East after Chack Neow but before the 331

On the back road from Hue Yai to the Phoenix road a small village has sprung up for the workers, this part will be the spur across to Ocean Marina

Land has been cleared at all points and there is batching plants, pre cast concrete facilities, offices, rows of new pick up trucks and new construction equipment.

A lot of progress for 15 months. Any guess on opening as far as Ban Amphur? I am pretty impressed with progress so far. Plus they want to collect tolls!

  9. Needed a Sunday game and was desperate. Phoenix Member Group was all I could find. Lewiinski's at Green Valley was a no-show a couple of weeks ago. Plus, I have had my Phoenix caddie since 2006 and she needed the work. (I paid her full 18 hole tip on my way out.)

Members case is enmeshed in the Thai legal system, or lack thereof. Tune in next year.

Having built businesses since 1976, I always thought the objective was to keep your current customers and gain new ones. Not the way the Phoenix owner thinks. Excellent business case in how not to be successful.  I think there was as surplus cart or two after the required buggy requirement was instituted in 2013, about 100+ new buggies purchased and the place was deserted for two full years.

Members get to play there (for now, until she changes the rules) for Bt200 per round and also pay Bt24K annually.  Also, PSC guest rates are lower than member guest rates. Shows who is valued.

    Very strange!
