Obviously, if a business owner is getting only a few customers from a particular segment of the market--in this case, English speaking customers--he may intelligently decide it is not worth his time and energy catering to them.  If, however, that market segment is large enough, it would make perfect sense to cater to them, in this case having English speaking staff.

Even without the high-tech scenarios, thee have always been people such as writers who work remotely, and it isn't so much that this is illegal, more a matter that it just isn't covered in the law. But in any case, you are not going to persuade the OP; visions of soundbites like "THE LAW IS THE LAW" dance in his head. However, if I were to start a country and set myself up as dictator, I would recruit lots of charter members like the OP because I could rest easy knowing he would do exactly as told and never question the status quo.

Are you sure? I have never heard that Thailand has no "special category" short-term visas and work permits to cover the situations you describe.  I might be wrong, somebody correct me if I am.

Can you even get a work permit if you do not work for a Thai company?  Someone who is more familiar with the law, correct me if I am wrong; is there any provision for work permits for people who are self-employed; writers, bloggers, journalists, photographers, day traders, those performing work for an overseas employer that is not registered in Thailand ???

Look, foreigners have been doing all kinds of "casual work" in Thailand forever. It usually isn't a problem ... Unless your number comes up, and then it's a problem.  To legally perform any kind of work, paid or unpaid, commercial or charitable, you are required to have a work permit.

I disagree. The reasons for these rules is extremely logical and the logic is easy to follow: We tolerate your presence here as long as you provide income; as long as you don't become too settled and comfortable; as long as you do not regard your situation as permanent; as long as you do not begin thinking about this place as "home;"  as long as you don't become too vested and invested in being here; as long as you never forget your place; you are a "guest" (even though we don't put no damn mints under your pillow and give you little bottles of shampoo like he Holiday Inn!).

This policy and attitude can be soft pebbled and remain more or less in the background, or it can be more "in your face" as it has been recently.  The irony is that so many of us keep coming back for more.  Please Sir, can I have another?

The Amish are very nice people, don't hurt anyone and undoubtedly don't have much of a carbon footprint or have a significant impact on the environment.  Good for them!  However, going back to the 19th Century and forcing everyone to behave like Amish is a regressive Luddite mentality.  Let's more forward, not backwards!  
 

• Invent efficient biodegradable shopping bags from various materials. Provide them at point of sale.
• Charge for bags or tax them if can guarantee tax money will go to fund research.
• Devise recycling of plastics and other waste that is truly practical and efficient.
• Address landfill problem, come up with better ways to process waste that has a long half-life.

Some of these thing may be challenging, but hardly outside of our skill set. Moreover, these projects would create jobs rather than pulling the rug out from thousands of workers involved directly and indirectly in the production of plastic bags.

In this case, a particularly nasty and radical type of "social justice" politics driven by "liberal guilt," self-flagellation, and a hatred for Western civilization.  This ideology would be happy to "deconstruct" society as we know it without a clue as to what would replace it, in the fantastic hope that something really, really nice will magically emerge in its wake.

Yes, and they were an improvement over paper as you can only carry a couple of big paper shopping bags at a time.  Anything wet inside a paper bag will cause it to melt. Anything heavy will cause it to tear. It is not an ideal way to deal with dog poop. And if I recall correctly, paper bags were eliminated in order to help preserve the rainforests and thus reduce C02 in the atmosphere.  I guess the poor, pitiful trees can go F... themselves now!  

You know, people, true believers, are soldiering on and dismissing the inconvenience of  retailers not providing bags for purchases. But if you think about it, not providing bags is absurd. I don't care how many countries have instituted similar bans. To attempt to do social engineering on this massive scale without FIRST devising alternatives is reminiscent of a  Three Stooges routine, a really bad, not funny Three Stooges routine.

And not a peep about the thousands of people directly and indirectly connected with producing and distributing plastic bags who will lose their jobs? Not a peep from anyone about them!  I guess they can go F.... themselves too!
