Yes, and they also want to make sure sure you are not laundering illegal money. About 3 years ago Thai immigration started asking to show proof of were my money was coming from.
The first bank card I had from Bangkok Bank was card that had "Union Pay" on it and it would not work for online payments. I think Union Pay is connected to a Chinese credit card company. I went back to Bangkok Bank and explained the problem and they reissued a new card that is connected to MasterCard and I've had no problems at all.
