  1. An FET or TorTor Sam is issued by the bank of the foreign exchange recepient from his external account in his name to prove they have imported the currency correctly, It is not issued to a developer receiving funde presumab!y because it would open all sorts of avenues for developers to use the FET process incorrectly to facilitate sales , as they have in fact here, if they have lied about their ability to produce an FET certificate issued by their bank.

You should never transfer substantial funds ta a developer or the seller of any condo or Real. Estate agent, only to your own hank account so a FET can be properly issued. And You will heed it to easily export the proceeds of a subsequent sale as shown here.

    1. After sleeping on this, I imagine that at subsequent visa renewals you will need to provide immigration with a certified copy of your past 12 months of activity on the account and immigration will review it to determine whether it conforms to the regulations. I don't think many banks have the wherewithall to decipher visa stamps to verify balances are conforming to immigration requirements. But if failure to meet the requirements isn't discovered until T minus 30 days before renewal date, what then? No visa, and you get kicked out of the country?

By the way, to the best of my knowledge, Bangkok Bank only provides immediate access to 6 months account history. If a longer period of time is needed, it has to be made by special request and there is a few days delay before it can be received. I suspect many banks are the same. So there's a good chance that this type of account history letter is not going to be able to be obtained on a same-day basis, but will have to be requested and then picked up from the bank at a follow up day, likely making the obtainment of this letter more cumbersome than a simple verification of funds letter. There just doesn't seem to be any awareness about keeping these requirements simple and manageable, especially for senior citizens.

    2. This new requirement really does beg the question: what is the purpose of this financial requirement for retirement visas:

Is it to insure that retirees will not be a financial burden on the state? (Doesn't hold water if the funds are effectively frozen or half frozen in the account on a year round basis.)

Is it to insure that people who retire in Thailand have ample money to spend so that they stimulate the economy? (You can't spend money which is frozen in an account, and having funds on deposit in no way dictates consumption patterns.)

And as TallGuyJohninBKK asks, why does this regulation only apply to retirement visas and not marriage visas? This regulation appears to be discriminating between retirees based on their marital status, and if same-sex couples aren't eligible for marriage visas, it is also discriminating against people based on their sexual orientation, both of which is prohibited in many Western countries. Does anybody know if Thailand has any laws against discrimination based on marital status and sexual orientation?

OK...."correct documents" in the past have been the "income letter" which is now mostly unavailable except from the Embassy of Burkina Faso. (lame attempt at humor)  Supposedly there is one other service advertising a price of 7000 baht, but I can get no information. I have sent an email and am waiting for a response. I was under the impression, that the police were "cracking down" on what is supposed to be a major source of their income. I am just trying to stay here legally without completely destroying my budget and paying my bills at the same time. I want to move away from Pattaya, to Nakhon Pathom, where my fiancee has shown me condos and apartments for less than what I pay here with more amenities and more space. I can't really expect her to marry me if I can't guarantee her that I won't have to leave the country.

You cannot take the expression 'The Police' to refer to a single element so any statement made by one element may not be recognised by another.

Would there not be some incentive for an officer to just falsely accuse a motorist of attempted bribe?

But seriously, 50 Baht? Thats actually insulting.

50 thb is the normal bribe paid by 'poor' Thai people in a truck when pulled over by police in Bangkok.

Your comment is symptomatic of The incorrect western perception of value in Thailand that will increase the price of everything in Thailand especially for farang and has no place in the reality of Thai life, it is pure westspeak.

  7. Year after year after year...we hear the same old tune about the education system here. Its funny in a sad kind of way. Thais love to call anyting they consider unfashionable or stupid as being 'Laos'......How ironic this is then.....

This REALLY needs to be sorted out NOW! I am working at a government school at the moment......not for much longer because I have had it! Thai schools are, in the main a joke. Thai teachers are dinosaurs that are still using teaching techniques that come from 1937. I often walk past the Thai teachers classes and more often than not they are sitting on their backsides with NO interaction with students! They simply write a load of info on the board and the kids copy it.....after that thier job is done!!!! I would be ashamed to teach in such a way. I feel it is my job to try and engage the students, interact with them, get them questioning me. I am the odd one out it seems.

The head of English at my school is a lovely lady that has a Masters degree in English. I often have to speak Thai with her as, if I dont, she wont understand what I am on about! Unfortunately this is common here. I have only met a handful of Thai English teachers that can actually have a conversation past the level of a 5 or 6 year old. I have to 'teach the teachers' sometimes and guess who are the ones that dont show up???!!!! You guessed it....the Thai English teachers!!! Why? Because its such a MASSIVE loss of face for them to be in a room with a native speaker.....I mean, what if I ask them a question? If I do everyone will see that the reality is that they CANNOT speak English!!! They are the teachers that most need to be there when I am 'teaching the teachers' What hope do the kids have? They see me once a week, twice if they are lucky. The rest of their exposure to English is through these numpties that cannot do their jobs properly.

I am looking forward to AEC opening. Thailand is slowly but surely starting to wake up to the fact that its not the centre of the universe. Its starting to realise that its not looking too good in comparision to its other ASEAN friends. It could go either way, but I am a bit cynical. I think Thailand will do what it always does, it will sweep things under the carpet, it will withdraw from a fight on a level playing field, a fight in which it will most surely ge a very bloody nose. AEC will be just a name, the Thais will find a way to get around all the horrible new rules that will show them up. It will be AEC on paper only. In reality nothing will change. The nepotism that is the cause of so much incomptence here will stay. The sad thing for Thailand is that talented people get cast aside by others with connections, or money. I have so many lovely and smart students in my classes....but so what? The system is against them. I just cannot see this place doing what is required to enable it to really, I mean really compete with places like Singapore. I hope I am wrong.

Am I being cynical? After reading headlines for years and years about how the educations system needs to change...and nothing happening...yes I am being cynical. I think the answer to the problem is clear. If you want an education.....go to Laos!

So most Thais cant speak English beyond the level of a 5 or six year old?? So let me ask you this..How many people in the UK can speak French or German or any other language beyond the level of a six year old?? I don't speak Thai beyond the level of a six year old but its not from lack of trying!

While the Thai educational system has many shortcomings, these type of surveys need to be taken with a pinch of salt!!

Many of us on this forum are married to Thais. If the education system is producing such robotic people incapable of critical thought then we need to ask the question why so many'educated' westerners marry Thais?????

The perfect educational system doesn't exist. We need to be culturally aware when analyzing the Thai system and remember that its developed from a different way of thinking. Let's not be arrogant and assume that Western systems are the best. I've just returned here from the UK. People are miserable there and struggling to survive. Compare that with the vibrancy and positive outlook of Thai's. Maybe we are the ones who have it all wrong????

Actually the OP said in clear English that the Thai English Teachers could not speak English better than a 5 or 6 year old Engish speaker.

It is time to get rid of the entire TAT with it's expensive staff and money burning machinery in poor attempts to 'lure' tourist to come here. It is irresponsible to leave formerly high gaining industries (rice and tourism) in the hands of overpaid amateurs.

There is enough proof by now there are no native genuine experts in those fields in Thailand. However, to solve the problem forget about this losing face b.s. and 'lure' some of the millions of professionals from outside over here to get the job done properly.

    No Chance.

  9. Awful. Why is it so difficult to get a working visa in Thailand? Thailand needs to follow in South Koreas footsteps. All of the paperwork is done while the prospective teacher is in his/her home country. Before I taught in SK I needed my bachelors degree notarized and apostilled. The same with my FBI check. Included was my sealed transcript. Once done I sent the items to my recruiter who then secured my working visa for the year. The process took 3 months mainly because of the FBI check.

Why can't Thailand implement something similar?

Because Thailand (state) does not want long stay farang for any reason.

  10. you would think the local leaders would be aware of these scams, and would prevent this from happening

a few lynchings would do it, as word spreads to the scammers bosses that, rather than find more victims, they can [pick up their smooth talking human trafficker off the tree outside the village

    Will be on commission.

  11. A few companies with similar looking ads are advertising a range of Samsung/Apple products at very cheap prices, in the classifieds at Bangkok Post e.g. Samsung Note 2 @ 300US$.

They of course say they are authorised dealers providing service backup based in Thailand (Bangkok/Chiang Mai) etc.

These offers seem to be flitering down to Craigs List with some mark up but still looking cheap.

There are a plethora of these ads, anyone got any experience in dealing with them or other comment?smile.png

  12. horrific accident , I guess this guy was not "used" to drive such powerful motorcycle ..Maybe the rental could ask the people some proper driving license ... shoking one more time .

A proper driving licence doesn't count for much without experience on these humungus motorcycles.

It is basically ridiculous having them on urban streets. blink.png
