  1. I wonder how the father of the young lady in question , sitting at home in Issan, doing nothing, getting the monthly bank transfer from his exploited daughter is going to react to his weekly flogging, by the indignant farang, or whether the farang himself will escape alive!!. Interesting......

If that was the case, would it still justify sex tourism ?

Well at least the 10% involved in 'sex tourism' are getting some relatively decent money maybe you should direct your wrath at the people who are really exploiting the other 90% i.e. the Male Thai general public.

Or is it not the girls you are really concerned about but some western morality trip?

Come to mention it any relationship with 'the night tripper?"

  2. Thai Airways (will bump up the list once new BKK airport opens and new Airbuses and Boeings are delivered with upgraded seats

Any idea when these are scheduled to be delivered by Thai?

The Thai authorities tried to tie the confirmation of the Airbus order to a reciprocal increase in business from Europe that included the lifting of the ban on Thai chicken products after the 'bird flu' outbreak.

Anyone have any further knowledge on this ? Have they ordetred the planes or is it still up in the Air? (sic)

  4. Open a Nationwide account at the builing society. Then draw from your ATM. No charges.

This is correct, I am with Nationwide and use the Atm facility with them and the exchange rate never seems out, this kind of thing is how the Building societies took business from the banks in the first place with their covert charging for things like ATM use/exchange rates.

On the subject of regular transfers , nationwide charge GBP20 for a SWIFT transfer, the 'normal' international transfer mechanism , (as do other banks according to another simultaneous thread here on the same subject). This could get a bit expensive so high value transfers are the order of the day here.

When I set up the only SWIFT transfer I have made to Thailand at Nationwide, they required two forms of picture ID , if driving licence both parts (!), Thai bank Details including Account Name, Account Number, Bank , Branch and Thai Banks Swift code. They said 5-7 days. Money is transferred in sterling and exchanged at the Thai National Bank rate. No problem.

Nationwide also has an excellent internet banking system you can look after your affairs with at home whilst in Thailand.

  5. They only point this out to you if you have  connecting flight. There's no point in telling you if you leave the BKK airport.

They pointed it out to me when I checked my luggage through.

They only offer this if you stay at BKK airport in the departure lounge. There'll be no more passport control neither.

So if you pay departure tax in Samui, you can't leave BKK airport.

Sorry this is still not clear,if I pay 400bht at Samui I pay no departure tax at Bangkok airport, is this correct, if i don't depart Bangkok airport I still pay 400 baht departure tax Samui airport? and then pay again at Bangkok at some later date?

And if I land at domestic terminal how do I get to international terminal without leaving departure lounge?

  6. Cut PvtDick a little slack eh? He's got a right to an opinion.

For guys who don't think they're doing anything wrong, the sex tourists and their apologists sure do get sensitive about any criticism.  :o

    chill out

    cv

Perhaps interpreting PVTdicks remarks as a criticism of sex tourists or their apologists is a nice and easy misplaced judgement (deliberate or otherwise), they seem to me to be a criticism of the host nation and it's policies that PVTdick probably has various other empathies with which brings with it only one sentiment 'Hypocrisy'.

As you rightly imply sex tourists and their apologists are neither here nor there.

  7. If you walk through the connecting tunnel its 15-20 mins.

There is also a shuttle bus outside the main terminals that take you to domestic.

I did not find the signposting from International to national terminal very clear , I was walking in circles, maybe thats just me (jetlagged), but if you're pushed for time maybe the bus is a better option.

  8. One more thing: Samui departure tax only is 400 (500 repectively) if u continue for international flights...

When I checked in at samui with no onward going international flight from Bangkok , they took 400 baht departure tax from me and TGF. I was never aware of the point made above. Had I had an onward international flight I would not have been aware

that I had paid the Thai departure tax and would have paid it again, as I did when I eventually left LOS.

Could this point be clarified please for the benefit of future travelers.

  9. Great advice.  Do you know whether with Nationwide/Barclays/HSBC they transfer directly to the Thai bank or do they have to transfer through another UK bank first?  I read about this in an earlier thread.

Should I envisage a better deal going through BKK Bank?  I don't have an account currently, but I can open one.

Thanks for the tips so far! I'm transfering 25k GBP so the 20 GBP fee seems fair enough to me.  I know Natwest charge 18 GBP, but not sure what their rates are like.

Further to my original post , may I add that if you are transferring the money to buy property, you must put on SWIFT form reason for the transfer ' Buying condo/property/ house' Though on reflection how a falang can be transferring money to buy property other than a condo, might be open for further scrutiny.

  10. PVT Dick, all very well to say don't come, spare us another sex tourist and all that, but I bet the thais he spends money with over his holiday will disagree with you.

Yeah, I agree, if PVT Dick is so much against sex tourism maybe he should go back to whence he came and allow the Thai people to run their country the way they obviously want it run, in peace.

  11. Seen quite a lot of info about transfering money from the UK and the associated costs, have finally settled on SWIFT transfer, but although I can find posts on how to do one I was wondering in your personal experience who you found to be the best

    i) Swiftest service  :o

    ii) Best exchange rates

    iii) Lowest service charges

What about the worst banks to deal with?  Any other problems?

Who is the best Thai Bank to deal with?

Who is the best UK Bank/BS to deal with?

I have an account with Nationwide BS, but am prepared to use another bank if advantageous.

    Thanks in advance  :D

I have transferred GBP5000 to a Bangkok Bank Savings account with Nationwide via swift, the charge was GBP20, you have to go into the branch, take two forms of picture ID, (if driving licence both parts) fill in the form , no problem takes 5-7 days, can't imagine any other bank being much different, I think you have to transfer the money in sterling to Thailand and the exchange rate is determined by the Thai National Bank, so not much room for dealing there.

  12. Last time I went to Cambodia on a Visa run , one of the guys on the bus got a 60 day stamp on reentry. during the course of previous conversation he told me 'that they do a 60 day renewal here' and he got it.

If economy comes into it I use Cambodia Inter, 261/5 Soi Buakhoa, Pattaya City, phone 038 421 590, at 1700bht Weds & Sun not much chance of getting back by 2.30pm though! However they do let TGF go for 500 bht which is more than most of them do wanting the full monty. The shop is about a kilometre down a street almost opposite Friendship supermarket South pattaya Road, meet there at 7am and they take you to the bus , a big double decker.

They also sell a six seater VIP for 2000bht, daily, no experience of that.

  13. Apologies if this question has been asked before - I am relocating from the UAE to Thailand shortly, will my GSM/Mobile handset work with the operators there? Its a Nokia 9300 and is not locked to any network.

Ive read some internet sites that say you must buy your mobile in Thailand to work with the Thai SIM cards?

Thanks for the help in advance..

    Mark

I think it might be worth mentioning that GSM phones are manufactured to operate on a variety of 'frequencies' (?). I believe that the Thai Frequencies are 900/1800 this is the same as the U.K. and apparently the UAE , so no problem just need a SIM if the phone is not locked to a provider, although it seems that the Thai boys are pretty good at unlocking phones.

I am aware of phones out of the USA that will not work in Thailand (or U.K.) because they operate on different frequencies, so I guess the universal advice to the question is 'check that the phone operates on the 900/1800 GSM frequencies".

  14. www.direct-travel.co.uk do a policy with GBP10million medical and repatriation cover for GBP520 for 2 pax for 365 days cover. This is like 365 day holday insurance. Up to age 65.

If you're stay was actually less than 365 days the cost would be proportionately less.

  15. I have for the first time, after months of searching how, stimulated by this thread sent two free SMS messages to a Thai mobile phone, via Yahoo. ( I don't know as yet whether receiver has been charged anything.)

This was achieved via www.yahoo.com does not seem available via ww.yahoo.co.uk (lashed up witth B.T. U.K. consumer ripped off again!)

It states on the yahoo site that this only available to AIS and DTAC phones.

This is how you do it:

    1) Go to www.yahoo.com sign up (if necessary).

    2) Go to yahoo messenger and sign up.

    3) Click on Text and follow instructions.

    Simple!

  16. I was offered £365 (inc.tax?) on Phuket Airlines for a 6 month ticket with westeasttravel travelling in Feb. But as I considered the flight with Eva in the tourist class a bit stressful-lack of space,etc-I reckon that Phuket Air would be similar,if not worse.

So I think that I'll take Thai Air for £488 inc.

I flew with phucket air in november 2004 from lgw to bkk, 747: old, landing: faultlessly smooth, service: OK, free Thai newspapers (in english) , eye candy:good, food: mediocre (by airline standards), alcohol: not quite forthcoming enough though free, legroom: not good not too bad (I am 6'), price v.reasonable GBP355 overall rating: An efficient budget airline, good value , nothing went wrong, would use again but then I am not rich. I believe they only fly LGW-BKK in the winter season.

I post my experience with phuket air from another thread in the hope it might be helpful, I would add 'a bit more happy holidaymaker than business travel"

GBP488 sounds cheap for Thai air.

    Cheers
