Why be embarrassed about prostitution? I'm not embarrassed to be a programmer, it's what I do for a living. I don't like it. It's boring. But it's what I can make the most money doing. So I do something I dont like to make money.

There is very little difference.

My missus is Thai but ethnically Lao, like lots of Isaan people. We've been to Laos twice and they seem pretty relaxed about everything. Missus didn't even need a visa as she spoke Lao and she was welcomed as if she was Lao. It's a great place and the people are really nice.

So have fun but lovelaos and hgma have the best advice above IMHO.

The thought that someone would kill themselves over a Thai woman is disturbing in itself, unless you realize just how some Thai women can manipulate a man emotionally. RIP to the fellow. Too young to go this way.

Can one have a "legal encounter" with a 13 year old?

It sounds crook to me from every angle, It's hard to know whether to be sad, outraged or stunned.

I have a 12 yr old daughter, the thought of her being in a position like this in a year is shattering.

You misunderstand me jt. That is exactly what I am saying. We don't know the facts. Is someone else pulling the strings? Did he really have no idea of her age? I merely say that if she is 13 it is sad, I can't help but personalise it as I have a daughter near to her alleged age.

Seems it all started with overstaying. In all my 25 plus years living the expat life I never understand why people overstay visas. It's asking for trouble everywhere. When you're overseas adhere to your visa conditions. It's easy.

it only happened once but i managed to miss a flight I WAS A DAY LATE WHEN I GOT TO AIRPORT TG staff was kind enough to just put me on the flight anyway at no extra cost lucky me

When I'm away from my home country I am always aware of when my visa expires and plan my travel accordingly. It isn't something people should take lightly. "Oh sorry I lost track of time" doesn't cut it. Countries tend to take their immigration laws seriously.

And I know you technically don't have a visa when you're a tourist here, but your stay is limited and they even help by putting the actual date in your passport ...

No, not a joke. TV is always full of ads for dating sites but normally just the Thai and Filipina ones. This is the first I've seen of it being context sensitive.

Someday, someone in Thailand will figure out how to make a CCTV system that works. How many stories have there been (mostly from Phuket & Pattaya) that "the video camera was not working that day."

I was just about to say the same thing. The hub of faulty CCTV systems.

I know it's high season but Pattaya and Jomtien were packed in mid December. Compare that to Cairns where during their high season this year the place was empty.

His reaction was simply too violent. Missus said if there is a dog around the village that keeps making trouble and the owners do nothing then someone will give it something to eat and it will "fall to sleep". For ever.

These stories are usually followed by lots of posts making vacuous assumptions as to what happened or indeed why it happened.

But assumptions aside, we really need to learn from all these tragic situations. What measures can we take to prevent this happening to us. Let's face it, none of us want to meet with such a grisly end.

Don't talk or interact with the local population at all, ever.

How do you through immigration then? Or catch a taxi? Or order food in a restaurant? Buy stuff at a 7 eleven? Exist at all?

Was one of the six Thai ladies he was recently "partying" with perhaps married to a jealous husband? Be him Thai or Farang?
