  1. Is Cathay any good is rather like asking do Porsche make nice cars!

if the timings work I would jump at it, and while Royal Jordanian are decent they are not in the same league.

The routing is via HKG, probably one of the world's more civilised airports, so what is there not to like?

Cathay are an airline with a very good reputation but right now there are loads of complaints about the new seats that they have installed in economy and 12 hours is a long time to be in a bad seat.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

Never having used either before I had no real idea about them. Oman Air, Emirates, Etihad have all been good but their prices seem at lot higher at present.

Yes, via HKG. And good to know CP are a good airline.

Yet to be traveling in economy and to have bad seats does not sound too good. I'll have to look into that a bit more.

  2. I have not used these before but apart from Air India and Turkish airlines both Royal Jordanian and Cathay Pacific are coming up cheapest for a UK -BKK return flight..

Are Royal Jordanian and Cathay Pacific airlines any good? They are coming in at £540 (ish) return with good stopover times.

Or would I be better off using Emirates / Oman Air type companies?

    Appreciate any feedback.

  3. Considering the use of wine glasses (with risk on breaking), cooler, the loss of profit on house sold drinks (an important margin factor in places as Pattaya where competition on food prices is strong) etc. 300baht for a properly opened and served bottle isn't that extra-ordinary I'd say.

For wine, yes, I agree. For other bottles of spirit where you buy mixers all night, no.

  4. Well I have tried all your suggestions, Except turn off or remove the firewall !! not a good idea

The intrusions are not from TOT my Internet provider, and I believe they are from a private

company, Internet Thailand Company Ltd. Bangkok

I have just booted up a few minutes ago and my firewall tells me that there has been 64 attempts

    already.

    regards Worgeordie

They are not trying to access your computer or steal your data or anything malicious.

Simply go to your preferences and turn off the notifications!

All our computers are pinged, not only yours. My firewall has logged 56,580 access attempts in a little over 3 months. No problem. Most are my ISP pinging me.

Now go and enjoy life, there are more important things in life :)

  5. I can't believe these jealous opinions I bet from the Chang drinkers mainly.

If it doesn't hurt anyone and he wants to do this then let him.

I for one hope they are very happy together

Jealous? Of a fool (IMHO). You have to be kidding. Who in their right mind gives £200,000 + gold just to get married? Love lasts but a short time - a bit like a quickie with a ......

I have had so many beautiful women here and am loving it, can't wait for the next one. Drank a lot more Chang than I have had women though.

  6. They take medicals. They see doctors. The government make them take medicals too.

Was it not last year when very many were given re-assessment of their sickness under the new government? Yet they are hounded again. Why? Because they are sick? An easy target? Is this not done to death?

Look up reciprocal agreements. Many are perfectly entitled to stay in reciprocal countries. Spain being one of them. Are the sick and disabled expected to die in the cold UK winters to keep costs down?

Ah and do not forget the lazy b*stards on the dole who will not work. Those scruffy, malignant stains of the working class on humanity. Forget the unemployment rates and the fact they and the sick and the ordinary working man did not cause the world wide financial problems. Just give them hell for being alive.

  7. I used to buy bottled water. The big bottles at 10 Baht. One day I got toxic water poisoning and was hospitalised. Never again will I but that large bottled water.

I use the water machine near me and I have never had a problem. It has filters, ultraviolet and such. I doubt it is perfect water, but then again this is Thailand and I have no great expectations on water purity.

  8. I think it would be handy to know the background of some posters here i.e. whether you live here or are here mostly on 2-4 week holidays, if the latter you will tend to throw money around with little thought as as such will usually tip generously, I do the same when I'm on holiday and it used to have it's rewards.

on another note, I sometimes buy lady drinks in bars I frequent if I like someone etc - do you still think a tip is in order if you've spent 300baht on drinks not for yourself

    oh and I'm a resident

    I wholeheartedly agree.

Holidaying people tend to go a bit crazy with the amounts they tip and make it worse for us who stay here all year round.

I too buy some of the ladies drinks. Sometimes it will be lady-drinks other times drinks for one of the ladies working in the bar who tends to take care of me regularly. Then why tip? The tip is in the drink(s).

If I am sat on my own I will tip but then that is for all the staff. My choice, same as you make your choice :)

  9. Not read all the posts.

All I can say is that if the OP is wanting to be a teacher here and he is currently with a girl under age, I hope he does not get caught especially if the situation gets him a criminal record.

Do schools here check criminal records for teachers? Would he be listed in his own country - even if 17 is legal back home as a criminal?

This one needs to be walked away from if the above is correct. Go start a new life somewhere else and become a teacher.

The OP is from 2010, so the girl is currently 18 or 19. sorry.gif

OK, sorry, did not see the original date.

Ta very much for pointing that out.

<-------- off to buy new specs :P

  10. Are these alerts popping up on the screen? If they are, alter your firewall setting to stop showing the alerts.

Apart from that, I see no problem. As said above it is most likely your ISP pinging the computer.

IP address: 203.151.21.63 IP country: th.png Thailand IP Address state: Krung Thep IP Address city: Bangkok IP latitude: 13.7500 IP longitude: 100.5167 ISP: Internet Thailand Company Limited Organization: INET Datacenter net Host: host63.truehits.net

    So no problems. OK?

  11. With wine it is a different matter because you are not buying mixers. 300 Baht seems reasonable for wine when you consider I am charged 300 Baht here to open Vodka or Whiskey AND I buy mixers.

I was always used to not paying a charge when buying mixers, ice, food. Now I refuse this stupid charge here in Pattaya.

    Vodka + charge + mixers = extortion.

  13. Why should it be illegal to explore the internet?

What you should have concerns about is if you revisit certain sites, say child porn, known terrorist sites or such because many might be watched and IP's logged.

I have known gaming sites to have links to some depraved stuff but I reported the link and person and they have been removed very quickly. It is too easy for some to post an innocent looking link that will take you to a bad site but if you revisit, then that is another matter.

As far as I am aware, it is not illegal to visit porn sites here but the Thai authorities do not want you to view Thai porn. Bad face for Thai to be seen in porn. The authorities seem to have no problem with you visiting other asian porn sites though.

    Happy surfing :)

  14. You got her. She admitted it. But I agree with others on the U Tube video in that you should not have posted it, especially as it does not show her actually stealing, even though she went to the drawer fist.

I do wonder how many other people she stole from. Why? Because she gave you the 20,000 back in a couple of hours. You do not expect a maid to have that amount of money to spare.

I would not employ a maid to clean for me. How much mess and dirt can one person make? Can you not wield a mop, a brush, wash your own pots or make a bed?

  15. I had to look in on this topic when I also read it in Yahoo with their headline of

    Jeremy Renner attacked in Thailand.

‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ star Jeremy Renner was caught up in a real-life action scene in Phuket, Thailand last night - and saw a pal seriously wounded with an axe.

As has been said, more good publicity for Thailand and Phuket in particular. I do wonder if those charged with murder will do proper time after TiT.

But at least Thailand got some publicity out of this that they did not really want and it may, just may, make some people realise Thailand can be a dangerous place an not always the LOS it claims to be. Not that I suppose it will really make one iota of difference in the long run.

  16. Re topbox for scooter I brought a box from a carboot sale in uk but purchased a rack to mount it on for my nouvo from the bike shop on the corner of south pattaya road and soi kowpai they had a selection of boxes there in varying sizes,I seem to remember that they where well priced compared to uk prices.

Thanks :) I'll pop round there soon and check it out.

  17. I had no problem putting in an internal hard drive I brought with me. There was no O/S on it. I usd it to transfer music, photos and movies stored on the drive already. It was set up as a slave drive and away it went.

If you do want to use the O/S on that drive then, yes, you will have problems.

If you are not moving here permanently and want to bring music and other files with you then copy them onto a portable drive.

One thing to note is that if you do bring the drive with you, make sure it is protected from being banged about. Best not to put it in your checked baggage as that can be thrown about a lot by baggage handlers.
