  1. Welcome to the very fortunate club. Mosquitos excrete a numbing agent when they bite, so you don't feel it. The itchy red spot is the body reacting to the substance and attacking it. So, you most certainly are being bitten, but for whatever reason your body does not react to the numbing agent.

Agreed. My understanding is that we all get bitten, but some just don't know it as the body shows no reaction.

  2. Thermae is a Bangkok Icon. I'm sure many of the kind TV folks will have nice descriptions of the place. It's sort of like Star Wars bar. Me English teacher? lol, no I just though "at it" sounded funny. Thermae is on Sukhumvit between Soi 13 and 15 under the Bush Garden bar and Ruamchitt Hotel. Highly recommended, no cover charge anytime

Many descriptions, but not sure many would be 'nice' :) probably better off just drinking on the pavement bars they set up. IMO

  3. The Riverside

    Lampang

Riverfront restaurant, extensive Thai menu, Good value - look at the set lunches!

We particularly enjoyed the Beef in Red Wine on our last visit.

You will need Google maps to work your way through the one way system or PM me for directions.

+1. there is also an inexpensive but pretty decent restaurant called aroy one baht 5 mins away, plus weekend Market is ok I guess. Not a tremendous amount to do in Lampang too be fair.

  4. Things like razor blades and aftershaves are expensive here too. Mind you they're not cheap in the u.k. I use the gillette fusion pro-glide blades which I've not seen here as yet. Decent bed linen and towels aren't cheap either. And if you like certain condiments (hp, branston pickle etc) stock up on those. There's probably a hundred things, so just concentrate on looking forward to your new life and anything you might have forgotten can most likely be sourced here anyway. Good luck!

  5. Is it totally inconceivable that something unexpected has happened rendering these people penniless/homeless? It happens all over the world. When I worked in both NYC and London I'd often give some loose change. Why does it have to be a scam? I've only been living here 7 months so maybe I am missing something? Also, genuine question, Does it follow that the 'your' embassy has to help if you are destitute?

  6. Surely the view from scirocco takes some beating, although the wallet would also take a beating. Any of the restaurants in the mandarin oriental hotel are superb. Lord Jims is my favourite, just make sure you get a window seat for the best river views. Enjoy
