  1. To go back to the original topic:

November was terrific, I had to turn away quite a few people because my resort was full up. The best November I have ever Ihad, with a large difference.

Bookings for December and further down the road are still coming in, and I didn't have any cancellations yet.

Tourism is heavily affected by the turmoil for sure though, and it wouldn't surprise me if in a few weeks I will be twiddling my thumbs and waiting for customers.

  2. My experiences with Meuang Thai, Phuket office, were quite positive. My pickup was wrecked by the 2004 tsunami, and they quickly paid the full amount. After that I bought a second hand pickup, which burned down after a bit more than a year because of a problem with the electrical cabling. Once more they instantly paid me the full amount for which the car was insured.

  3. PS 2 Bungalows at the northern end of Thanon Rath Uthit 200 Pee. Fridge, aircon , hot water, safe in the room, swimming pool, restaurant. Tel. 076-342207/8 . Should cost around 800 Baht.

When I booked a room for a customer there yesterday, I learned that they take 1200 Baht for an aircon room now, they have cheaper fan rooms.

Oh well, cheaper rooms can be found in the Soi Saen Sabai/Paradise Complex area.

  4. I've just got the information that many international flights to Thailand(Bangkok) will be redirected for landing in Phuket.

    Gerd

Source? I know that they are talking about redirecting flights to Phuket, Chiang Mai and U Tapao, but I doubt these airports are big enough to accomodate the biggest types of passenger planes.

  5. I remember situations like meeting a farang accompanied by two Thai women in a very much out of the way national park. The Thai ladies returned my greeting, but the farang plainly ignored me. On another occasion, I was having a softdrink in front of a shop way out of nowhere. A pickup truck stopped, and out came a farang, who acted like he didn't see me.

This type of behaviour strikes me as a bit odd. I definitely don't nod to every farang in a place like Ranong where many farangs are passing through, but in a completely out of the way place I certainly do.

  6. To my experience, for a vibrant expat scene it needs something to center around: a golfing association, a bi-weekly meeting or party , or whatever. I have seen that expats who had been some place for a very long time (you would expect them to have a satisfying social life already), were interested right away when they learned that something like that had started.

Just having a few farang oriented bars around is not enough. Often there is a lot of people around who would like to have more of an expat scene, but if it has nothing to center around, it is not so likely to develop.

  7. Swanky,

Probably you are getting a lot of profile views because your avator suggests you are female. Changing your avator into a photo of a parking lot or a screwdriver would most likely considerably slow down the stream of profile views.

  8. There must be a device through which you can watch foreign television stations through the internet, at the time the program is being broadcasted. I believe it works like this: the device consists of 2 parts, one of these you connect to the computer, and the other one to the television. It connects wirelessly, but the computer and the television set should be fairly close to each other. Needless to say you watch the program at the television, and not the PC or laptop. I was told the standard version only works for modern flat screen TV's, but there should also be an adaptor which makes it usable for older model TV's.

Don't know exactly what foreign TV stations you can watch this way, it seems to be possible with German television.

Does anybody know where in Phuket it might be possible to buy this device, and the aforementioned adaptor?

Mind you I am not talking about websites through which you can watch foreign television programs at a later date, I have been familiar with that principal for a long time.

  9. In case somebody else has to pick up your passport for you, most shops that sell office materials have standard forms to authorize somebody to do something on your behalf, the expression in Thai is " bai mop am naat". Let somebody write down in Thai that you authorize him/her to pick up your passport, and sign it.

Still I would make sure beforehand if they accept this or not, they can be a bit fussy sometimes.

  10. Tywais and Goyave,

Thanks a zillion, you guys made my day. The program you recommanded functions beautifully. Crushdepth also thanks for the input. For halfway computer literate people like me, it can be much more effective to ask a question in this forum, than to hassle around endlessly in the internet, downloading programs that don't work, or discovering too late they are only offering a free trial period.

  11. In my resort, I use 4 computers. 3 Desktops are downstairs in the office, they are used by guests to access the internet. Myself, I use the laptop which is upstairs in the restaurant, and connects to the internet through WIFI.

For music in the restaurant, I use internet radio. The speakers are connected to one of the computers in the office. Quite frequently, the music stops, and I have to go downstairs where the problem can be solved with just a mouse click. Not so practical to have to go downstairs for this often. I would like to download and install a program which enables me to access and control the "music computer" through the laptop upstairs in the restaurant, using the LAN (home network).

Using the laptop for the internet radio wouldn't work I think, the WIFI signal strength is often poor, and besides that the laptop is quite an ancient one.

Does anybody know about usable, preferably free software?

    Suggestions appreciated, Kees.

  12. Bengt doesn't say whether the farang officer was alone, or acting under the command of a Thai police officer. I would be extremely surprised, (and would not agree with the policy), if this volunteer was stopping cars without under the direct supervision of a Thai officer at that location.

We need some more details Bengt

    Simon

Spot on, Simon. If just 2 or three uniformed farangs, without Thai supervisors, would try to make me stop at the highway, I would probably assume they were adult members of Scouting International trying to hitch a ride, and I would keep on moving.

  13. I have the impression that in Thailand, if a woman in the child bearing age marries or starts cohabiting, it is still expected that in not more than one year there will be at least a child on the way, especially if both she and the male partner are still childless. This might apply less among higher educated young people, who have to think about their careers.

Thai people are often surprised when I tell them the average Dutch woman gets her first child when she is 29, and that in the Netherlands nobody expects a 23 year old couple who just moved in together, to start breeding right away.

  14. In order to do the visa run, you could also just go to Phuket town busstation and take the public bus to Ranong, and from the busstation there take a songthaew to the pier where longtailboats to Burma/Myanmar leave. To use this option, you would have to leave early in the morning.

  15. If you cannot find a specific medicine (or an equivalent traded under a different name) a pharmacy can order it for you, and it will be there in a few days. There are lists on the internet for generic medicines, in other words different names for the same stuff. Hope this helps.

  16. 1) Sunshine tour (a golf tournament played regularly in South Africa)

    2) South Africa

    3) Christian

    4) Jezus.

    Can't miss I guess.

Reminded me of the 6 steps theory, that has circulated on the internet for a long time. It means that every person on earth is connected to every other person on earth by a chain of people knowing each other, not exceeding 6 people.

  17. alcohol is more a far more dangerous drug than heroin (probably even most of the crap that is passed off as 'heroin' because the drug is illegal) in terms of toxicity. Alcohol metabolizes into formaldehyde: a poison...

I know that somebody can grow old using heroin. In the Netherlands there might already be old people's homes for heroin users, we are talking about people who have been taking the substance for decennia.

But.....somebody who has drunk 8 beers every night for 2 years, can stop from one day to another without having any physical withdrawal symptoms.

The same cannot be said of somebody who has taken heroin every day for 2 years.

So IHMO heroin is more dangerous than alcohol.
