Is there anything Hawaiian themed? Hawaiian pizza, I imagine, but any other dishes?

I’m certainly not an expert on Hawaiian themed.  Ambience and decorum looks Hawaiian as does the menu with the names of the offerings.  I did have a slice of pineapple next to my burger if that counts.

Seriously, Big Kahuna is a nice touch but I enjoyed the food even more. :-)

  2. Big Kahuna

In the old Pastrami and Rye place, same great chef. Had the bacon cheeseburger, patty was cooked fresh, not frozen. The bun was toasted to perfection.

Definitely a quality burger, good to see Jim back. I’ll definitely be back for more, probably try the pizza next.

I don't claim to be a 747 expert, jet mechanic or even a commercial pilot, but I will wager anything left in my bank account by Jan 12th, that this plane is not a 747,  It is way too small.  Maybe the shape of the cockpit would give it away if anyone would take a close look at the 747 which has been sitting at the Udon Thani airport for years. This looks more like a military transport.  Business must be booming there noting the size of the outdoor restaurant...

I’m certainly no expert either but the last above plane looks similar to a C-47 Douglas transport or a variant, definitely not a “Jumbo Jet”.

  4. My guess is that's just branding for fun. No chance it will be a Hawaiian food place. More general American for sure. But it would be cool to have a place to get poke.

When I mentioned “Hawaiian” earlier I was referring to a previous poster’s comment of the possible name change to “Big Kahuna”. Hopefully it refers to burgers, not Hawaiian Food. If it’s more American more than Hawaiian that would be okay.

Me too but it definitely won't be another Pastrami and Rye. I think good breakfasts and burgers are likely.

I noticed bamboo cane poles lined up completely across the front deck area today.  Perhaps they are decorating and designing for a Hawaiian type theme as mentioned before?  Time will tell I guess.

For me it is perfectly clear. The only restaurant that will barbecue meat before your eyes.

Do you know any other places doing this apart from street sellers ?

What barbecue tradition do you know ? Barbecue is barbecue, I do not see anything else to think about ?! But I might be wrong.

Actually BBQ Prime Time on 9 does, if you care to walk over to their grill while they're grilling it.

  7. I thought I was posting this on this thread but instead opened another, so I'll copy and paste it here.  To the moderators, sorry.  If it bothers you please delete the original post, thanks.

Noticed while cruising by the the now closed down Pastrami on Rye restaurant that concrete mixing bags and other construction work has been going on, interesting.  Tonight, passing by on a baht bus I saw one of the original owners (bald headed guy) talking with one of the construction workers.

Now my curiosity is up.   Hopefully I let the cat out of the bag.  Their breakfasts were probably the best I've tasted in the Pattaya area and the guy that was instrumental in doing this was there tonight.  I could go on about the burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas, etc. but I'll save that for later when the proof is in the pudding.

I'm excited btw.  Should have stopped and asked, maybe next time.

Not surprised. That video didn't inspire me to want to eat there but I give them points for doing something "trendy" with the ramen bun burger (at least a few years ago). Trendy doesn't necessarily mean a good idea though.

I wonder what kind of beef patties they are using, Wagyu mix with Thai?  Or just Thai beef?  I messaged them on their Facebook page, and they responded.

    "Dear Sir,

We use high quality Thai beef with best receipt from our Chef. You can order well done or medium patty. It’s of your choice.
And please be informed that we have every day happy hours from 3 p.m. till 6 p.m. 1 burger + 1 soft drink or Chang Beer 330 ml.
    Have a good day!"

The menu does look awfully good though, not sure about the ramen noodle buns however, thankfully they offer three colors of bread buns and flat bread also :-).

  9. Beach Spot on Jomtien's Beach Road.  Very friendly and attentive staff, good Thai food, next time I'll have to try a farlang dish or two.  Will definitely make this a regular haunt.  The menu is surprisingly varied.

I tried my old standby chicken with cashew nut, pretty good although it has a northern flavor to it, a little bit of sweetness with the spiciness.  My gf tried the Chiang Mai soup and was impressed, enjoyed it.

Pilgrim's kitchen has a whacky open mike night on Wednesday I think. Or they did about 9 months ago. Best place to stay as well, good clean rooms in a newly renovated old French colonial house, nice food and coffee in the cafe downstairs, nice people running the place and staff have a good attitude. Sort of a backpacker vibe, so if you have that kind of allergy that causes you to go apopleptic at the sight of hippies  then maybe something else is your speed, but not too many options in Savannakhet, so either that or maybe some dusty semi-dirty place at non-bargain prices.

I agree with the food being pretty good, hard part is knowing where sometimes.  Lin's Cafe and Pilgrim's make a good cheeseburger, well worth the order.  Pilgrim's had some pretty decent nachos, somewhat of a pleasant surprise-TexMex in Laos and good at that.

Pilgrim's was booked up so I stayed at the Avalon kinda, they put me up in the old French house next door.  It was okay but a little rustic.  Both my lady and I got ear infections while we were there so beware of the tap water and your orifices.  The on site restaurant was nothing to write home about however the other hotel on the left side of Avalon made some pretty good local food and beverages.

The main complaint I had was being careful about being ripped off to absorbent Tuk Tuk and taxi prices (ask first) and everything is so spread out there, longer travels to destinations.  If you don't know where to go it could get troublesome in a hurry.

Try some Bangkok Banks in the capital city, or walk in with a good amount of money. Mai Phenn Rai rules this country.

Thanks for the heads up.  I actually have a Kasikorn Bank account but Bangkok Bank is the only one I know of that accepts routing numbered bank accounts (USA) and routes them to swift account numbers.

The bank I tried was the one on 2nd road in Jomtien.  Perhaps I could try others but getting a residence certificate at the Chon Buri Immigration office might be easy with a non-o, I should go and ask.

Can one do without a bank account in Thailand?

( is not intended to be a stupid question.)

Actually having a Thai bank account can be a convienence, easily pay my rent, online phone top off, and other services available in Thailand.  Not so easy if your bank accounts are in the USA as transferring funds via a Swift code can be troublesome or even impossible if not stateside to perform it.

I should get a Bangkok Bank account here as I hear they use routing numbers (USA Branch) which can be used for swift transfers but I've been told I need a residence certificate for a local account here in Thailand.  I guess I should ask immigration what's needed with a non-o for a residence certificate and take it from there.

I changed my address recently but couldn't apply for a TM30 due to not having or able to get #6. They didn't ask for a TM30. I hadn't left Thailand but was merely reporting a change of address.

I'm certainly no expert as it seems the requirements change with every visit even with the same laws on the books.

Anyway, I believe the TM 28 form is used for a change of residence.  Of course I would check with your local immigration office first as they might be interpeting the law a little different there and who knows, maybe there's an updated check list for TM 28's.

I'm coming back to Jomtien after leaving for a few months and I have a reentry permit stamp for Non O based on Retirement.

Based on what I've read all I need is and I'll quote a previous poster.

"When I reported returning to the same address to Jomtien, I did not need to re-fill a new TM-30, provide a condo-letter (juristic person), copy of lease, etc - just passport photos (main-page,  latest stamp), TM-6, and copy of my previous TM-30 passport-slip."

I'll be arriving late night so I'll have all the next day to gather my needed stuff and report to Chon Buri Immigration, on business days.

My question is, am I good to go doing this?

    Thanks

Update from earlier today at Chon Buri Immigration.  I went with the above items mentioned and was handed a check list and a blank TM30 by the front desk.  Unfortunately I was missing the filled out TM30, lease agreement, the owner's house book and his ID card.  Based on the overfull room shortly before lunch I decided to wait until about 2pm before returning.

I returned with all of the required items on the check list and saw the lady about 5 minutes after my arrival at 2pm.  She kept the new TM30 form and items 1-4 on the check list.  Items 5-7 were handed back as I had my previous receipt for the TM30 which is the same residence.  No change in residence.
