  1. see you on the bus? Where I used to live there were no buses. Getting a pushbike in English weather is an unforgettable experience and pretty restricted. It's okay for you to have these Utopian views, but reality is a bitch and when you are paying some of the highest prices in the world for what is a necessity, quite patronizing too.

Utopian views? The world is awash with people, all wanting a piece of the pie. Definitely not utopia, in fact the direct opposite.
Face it, the only effective way to change behaviour is by price.
Unless of course you live in a dictatorship. Not sure where you live.
Anyway not to worry, your next car will be electric.

  2. To be honest its not a practical solution. How are agricultural workers in other area of the country supposed to get around?  There are plenty of situations where its the only way to get people around.

The problem isn't the people in the back of the trucks (sometimes 16-20) its Somchai the driver (as it is with the majority of crashes.) Personally I think there is scope to ban them from certain roads though.

How else could they get around? Several ways - van might be best.
Oh, but hang on, it wouldn't be safer!

  3. Vans have all got signs warning about no seat belt fines, so they all have them. Trouble is I have never seen any of them workable, mostly the drivers tie them up so they cannot be used anyway and if you untie them they are useless and do not tighten up. They seem to think they are like an amulet, just having them hanging about will save lives!

Correct. The belts are tied so tight it's often not possible to untie them. So much for the six month safety checks!

  4. I see no mountain or steep road. I only see a slightly down hill straight road seeming to start to go slightly uphill where the accident happened. If the brakes failed the driver only had to keep going straight using gears to slow down and lose momentum until the bus stopped. Maybe he/she swerved attempting to avoid hitting slower vehicles in front.

Did you read the original? Don't think so . . .

  5. I went to that website, because I'm curious. I found my way to this page titled: (Thai language) The 2015 List of Certified Thailand Tourism Standard Company
I clicked on it and found further lists for Accomodation, Service, Activities, Attractions, Tour Guides...
Within "Accomodation" I found links for Hotels, Resorts, Long Stay
So I clicked on "Hotels", and this is what came up:

That's it. That's all the hotels in Thailand that are certified. Bangkok has two hotels that are certified by the Tourism dept. Sorry about the formatting...

    More window dressing unfortunately.

  6. Actually it was 23rd floor of the Holiday Inn Pattaya, balcony facing south. Could have bee a post card. It was high-tide, so less trash was visible but even at low tide there wasn’t that much.

Sounds nice. From that distance. I naively ventured into the water at Pattaya some years ago, but as soon as I got a good look at the particulates in the water and the oil on my legs I quickly got out. Haven't been back.

  7. He's absolutely right. Price is a matter for supply and demand. It's not the government's business to set prices.

Am I right in saying the equipment was provided free of charge by the authority?
In which case I'd have thought the authority has a definite right, in fact a duty, to have an input into prices.
Otherwise there would be an opening for . . . corruption!

  8. In my opinion, fewer people like us here - especially staying longer-term - and more from the growing regional power.  They even get free Tourist Visas.  Given the loads of tour-buses filled with their short-visit, zero-dollar tourists, it appears to be working.  All Thais I have met, personally - from moto-drivers to restaurant-owners - are not at all happy about this policy.

Get 'em in, fleece 'em, get 'em out quick sticks. Think you're correct. Sorry state of affairs for sure.

  9. "to ensure Thailand’s legal system is effective and efficient in serving the public."
That won't happen. Certainly not the case currently or anytime in the past.
A corrupt system and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.
Reform would need to start right from the top. This piecemeal approach with the cops is window dressing, as usual.

  10. 23 minutes ago, JackThompson said:
If you are referring to a tourist-visa with 2-entries, these are no longer available, unfortunately.  There is a multiple-entry (METV), but it is overpriced and a pain to get due to the required paperwork (virtually useless to most who could use it due to needing ongoing employment, etc) - so only worth obtaining if one plans to stay 6+ months (with border-bounces), or do many out/ins to other countries.

In the OP's case, a single entry followed by a visa-exempt entry - and either one of those extended by 30 days locally - would be the easiest path.

No longer available. Interesting. What are they trying to achieve?

  11. Dead right. But no it isn't about to happen.
If there was a profit in it maybe it would.
    [emoji106]

I'm sure there would be a huge profit to be made. Compare with the profit someone is gonna make with the speed guns.
Just have to find a company that makes Rolls Royce sweepers.
Then just wait till they break down (make sure nobody empties out the trash bin in the machine) and back to square one with a tidy bank account to boot.
    Easy peazy.

  12. If you can get a multi entry tourist visa it will be more convinient. No extensions needed, just a border crossing after 60 days.

Exactly. In Aus when I want to stay 4 months in Thailand I go to the local consulate (in Melb as it happens) and buy 2 x 60 day tourist visas. Means I have to leave Thailand once. Not expensive.
Actually don't even have to go there. You can do it conveniently using registered mail.

  13. Quite the opposite - China has a heavily male-skewed population. Having a son is desirable in Chinese culture, and if you're only allowed one child, it encourages couples to abort female fetuses in the hope the next one will be male ... So there's an over-supply of men in China

Most people (outside of China) would agree I'm sure that the one child policy was a huge success. In fact the world needs such policies like never before.

  14. sure , they replaced wealthy and generous punters with hordes of cheap chinkies who clog and pee on airport floors while waiting for visa stamps.
    indeed a great improvement :saai:

I don't know the nationality of the person involved but whichever, it is disgusting - at Hualampong station last week I needed to sit on a toilet. The floor of the cubicle was wet (body fluids? you're never sure) and some dirty footprints were on the floor. However the kicker was that those same dirty footprints were on the toilet seat. Bloody'ell.

  15. Moveable lane dividers should have been used and not the second hand heavy concrete ones that were placed in there. However common sense is sadly lacking in all aspects of road planning.

And isn't this just typical of the attitude here. Laughing as he spoke of the condition of the buses.

"Moveable lane dividers should have been used and not the second hand heavy concrete ones"

New ones would have been OK?
