  1. Ive just spent 4 months in the UK where I hardly spent a penny - Not because im a cheap Charlie but because retail goods and the general price of living seems far cheaper now-a-days.

I have recently noticed that electrical items and sundries etc have increased in price significantly! Price of Xbox 360 live 19000 baht and in UK 12500 baht. Mobile phones, washing machines, LCD TV's, Sun Glasses, Super market food etc etc, all cheaper in England. I can only assume that customs charges on imported goods are subject to high duty and taxes.

I wrote a small article that can be seen at www.lifeofriley.org this article was written last year now prices are higher especially fuel.

A few prices that I have chacked out in the last week,

Coffee at Starbucks is about 35 USD/lb

New Zealand steaks are about the same 35 USD/lb

Gas is about 4.50 a gallon

Non alcoholic beer is about 3.00 USD for a small can or bottle (my girl loves it)

Bottom line if you would like to have a car and live a life similar to your home country it is much more expensive here.

  3. I am a stateside American man. I'm trying to figure out how to help my Thai friend get a tourist visa to visit me. She cannot afford the trip alone. I am willing to sponsor her.

Will the American Embassy in Bangkok even consider an I-134 "Affidavit of Support", if I fill it out and send it from the U.S. thru the proper channels? I was under the impression that the I-134 is only useful for employees or family members. If the embassy will not consider the I-134, will they consider my financial documents showing I have the means to support my visiting friend?

All I'm trying to do is show significant finances for my Thai friend to visit me as a tourist in the U.S. on a B-2 tourist visa. She has a big family and good job in Thailand. I heard that the American Embassy officer will neither look at an invitation letter from me, nor consider my financials as the sponsoring American. Is this true? I would think that I could sponsor a friend to visit me in the U.S.

If I were in Thailand, could I even get the opportunity to speak to the embassy officer? I would consider coming there to personally meet with the embassy to help my friend get the visa. Please advise. Thanks a million.

If the following are true you have very little chance:

    1) Your GF has never traveled outside Thailand

    2) Your GF does not have a government job such as teacher or nurse or office worker

    3) You live in the U.S.

  4. BUPA will cover you worldwide but only for accident & emergency outside Thailand. If you are travelling outside Thailand I would recommend taking out travel insurance which will cover any medical costs up to a certain amount.

Wrong! BUPA covers you worldwide with the exception of USA which is ONLY accident and emergency!

  5. Most laptops have an S-Video out connector that you can use to connect to a TV so that you can send the video from your computer to the TV if you want to watch a movie or whatever.

However, a friend of mine and I cannot get our's to work. We plug it into the TV and send the video out and TV blinks for a second but no picture comes up.

We've tried two different computers and two different cables so we're pretty sure it is the TV's.

Has anyone else had any experience with this and have some advice?

    Thanks,

    PA

I use this connection to my TV ( s-video). This is what I have to do.

Connect the laptop to the TV first if I do not I will only get audio

    I am using a Dell

so I go to graphics property and choose dual display (primary TV secondary laptop)

The point is hooking it up only will not get you video and F8 DOES NOT WORK.

I have to change the graphics prperties.

    Good Luck

  6. is anyone useing slingbox to watch TV from thier home country??? if so what are the speeds that you get and the ISP that you are using.....if you do not know about slingbox it is a device that you hook up to your internet and cable back home, you control your cable box or DVR just like you are at home....it is a bit costly as you need cable TV and a good internet connection back home and here.....

it would be great to hear if anyone else is doing this.....thanks

I use it I love it!

True the quality depends on your connection but it is a wonderful thing for me to watch and or listen to all the American sports., I hooked it up to a TIVO so if i do have Internet problems ( which of course I do) the recorded program is just waiting for me to access it when i do have InterNET.

I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT

  7. The motto of Bangkok Bank:

"We realize that living in a foreign country is sometimes difficult so we aim to make it easier by tailoring a wide range of banking services for the needs of all of our foreign customers."

I have had two accounts with Bangkok Bank for over eight years. Today, I attempted to apply for internet banking having been successful with three accounts at the Kasikorn Bank.

No chance without a w*rk permit or a certificate of residence!

    What is this all about?

Here is some additional information concerning BKK Bank.

A farang CAN NOT get a debit card the card you receive for ATM is good ONLY for ATM can not be used to purchase goods.

I was told this ATM card can be used worldwide mine DID NOT in the states.

    ALSO

If you want to transfer money an additional password is required for each account that you wish to transfer money. This password is only sent to you via a SMS and ONLY to the cell phone on record with the bank.

  9. Just wanting some advice on which hotel to stay at while in Khon Kaen in April, have stayed in the Sofitel before and was happy with it, but there rates seemed to have doubled from last year :o:D nearly 3,500 baht a room now. My wife is from khon Kaen and has said that the Charoen Thani princess hotel was also good, rooms around 1,600 baht a night. Which hotel would you stay at?? any other decent hotels around Khon Kaen??

    Cheers

I prefer the Kosa over the Princess cost is about the same breakfast is not as good atr Kosa but I like the location better across from the Oasis.

  11. Amazing Thai Bank.

I am using the Siam Commercial Bank I had hoped that it would be a good bank but I guess that I am going to have to keep on hoping.

I had sent money to the SCB from Europe some of the cash was used to buy our house and when I wanted to buy a car I had to ask the bank nicely for my money. What do you want the money for they demanded, I felt that I was asking for there money to buy the car. I was told that I would have to return with the receipt from the purchase of the car to prove where the money went.

Some time later I was making arrangements to go to Spain with my wife and child, I have never used on line banking but decided to do so now with SCB they call itwww.SCBEASY.com that is far from the truth.

Having visited the bank and asked the girl there is it easy, yes she said and proceeded to take all my info so she could give me a password and what have you so that I could move my cash about even to Spain if it was needed. Great I said just the sort of service I need, I was given the package after filling in various forms and they had made more copes of my passport and away I went confident that I could now do all that I was promised.

After a few weeks in Spain I went on line to move some cash from my account in SCB to my bank in Spain. However I was confronted with yet more forms to fill in on line. Then they will send me a form to fill in by post to my home in Thailand I must sign it and show where the money has come from and they want yes-another photocopy of my passport. What do they do with all the copies of my passport?

I have simply given up all I can say is that the banks are as mad as hatters. Next time I will send the cash out first and that way I don’t have to worry about it.

Or change to an international bank like HSBC any one know a good way to give access to ones own money in Thailand?

You are right and dont let any of these dim wits tell you otherwise. Thai banks dont have a clue I have 3 years of experience.

Anyone who says otherwise has no real banking experience involving millions of Baht.

One of my banks would not give me MY money to buy a house! What a joke. Of course I eventually got it after a lot of hassle.

  12. This might not be the most appropriate place to post this, so please feel free to direct me to a more appropriate place.

Okay, I am female. I find some men attractive. I also find some women attractive, the cute ones, I mean, with a pretty face and preferably long, straight hair, and definitely on the skinny side. If I feel attracted to a cute woman, I enjoy being close to her and looking at her. I think it would be nice to cuddle, but almost always I would assume that she is straight and that she would not appreciate the advances. So I just pretend that it is all platonic. Sometimes I feel nervous, afraid that they would know my secret and be horrified, and sometimes I feel bad for being deceptive.

Is this normal? Some say that women are bisexual by nature. Is it really just a myth?

My GF is bi and we have had many wonderful experiences, we enjoy FMF and MFM but welike couples the most but have found it very difficult to find couples in Thailand. But we are always looking! :-)

  13. I'll buy a pitcher of beer for anybody who can help this Yank. I know this forum is for discussing Manchester and Liverpool, but my first love is the Patriots, Cowboys, Steelers, Green Bay and Da Gints.

I'll be in Khorat and Bkk for the playoffs/Superbowl, and would give anything (even free beer) to find a place to see the games live, or even with a short time delay. Channel 64 will probably have the games, so there has to be some place that will show them.

Help, please! And I'll never complain about Beckham again.

I have all the games at my place I LOVE SLINGBOX! and HEY I live in Khorat!

  14. I was thinking gee great deal 6000 month for this condo..Turns out with water going to be more like 9400 a month..I spent time in Hau hin,the bil was never more then 700-800 baht..WHO IS RIPPING ME OFF?

    Condo building?

or is this the cost of just living in pattaya..I have 1 room !! :o yes air con on only at night.

how much do you guys pay each month?

It appears that you do not have a separate meter for your unit, therefore your landlord is taking liberties.

  15. Sawasdee pee mai to all of you farangs living in Issan.

As of yesterday I am retired and I and my wife have decided to settle down in Thailand but we do not know where for the moment. My wife is Thai and from Khon Kaen (city) and would of naturally prefer that we chose KK. My experience from KK is only about ten visits there and never for any lengthily periods. Hence, I am rather green with regards to that area.

Some information about me. I am quite familiar with the Thai culture and their history after twenty-five years of frequent visits to the country. I have been working for a defence contractor selling combat management systems for naval warships and Thailand was one of "my countries". However, I do not speak Thai yet although now that I have more time it is an ambition of mine to at least get the basic knowledge. I have always lived in a big city, Stockholm, and some years in Sydney. Hence, it much too much a contrast for me to move to a rural area although I would not mind a smaller town.

My wife is a nurse and younger than me and would have no problem to get a job with the provincial government should we chose KK.

We have both ruled out Krabi, my wife has ruled out Hua Hin and in addition to KK we are primarily concerning somewhere between Jomtien and Rayon, and Phuket. I am very familiar with the area around Sattahip for the obvious reason as that is the main Royal Thai Navy base. We have previously owned land in Phuket but sold it more than ten years ago.

Anyone of you who are living in KK would be very welcomed to give me advise on how it is to live there as a farang. I am not much into bar live but in need of a social side of life with some sort of quality, and as a non-speaking farang I would prefer to be able to talk and socialise not only with my dog when the wife has gone to work for the day.

    I need your help fellows!

    Göran

For my money KK is one of the best run provinces in Thailand I vist there about once a month and I enjoy each trip.

  16. I would be really grateful for some assistance from someone who is used to downloading

MP3 tracks from what seems to be a myriad of " user unfriendly " music web sites :o

For example after going through a never-ending registration process for Napster

I then got a message saying even the subscription service is only available

in USA ? Same with AOL music. Another friend put me onto esnips but while I have succeeded in creating

playlists with the one track that I am after, I can't seem to find a way of transforming just one of these files

so that I can download it onto my MP3 player.

I just want to obtain an MP3 file of one on the female singer's ( SADE )

tracks from the mid 1980s. I'm fully prepared to pay for this track

and I'm not trying to get something to nothing but I just seem to be

    going around in circles. Thanks

  17. Here is a service my bank has I just found out about. I don't know if similiar banks have the same.

I can save on my ATM fees with this. ATM fees here in Thailand are $5 US when I use my Bank of America ATM visa card. My Bangkok Bank ATM fees are 20 baht. It adds up if you use your card alot.

My Bank of America online account has a feature that allows me to transfer money from my checking account in the USA to my Bangkok Bank LTD account here in Thailand.

I can transfer my entire pension here for $3 US (3 day process) or $10 US (next day process)

For the 3 day process, I can transfer $10,000. For next day I can only transfer $2000.

I wish I had that much to transfer every month.

This also maybe a possibility for you guys that have BOA in the states, I for some reason am considered a PREMIER CUSTOMER.

As a PREMIER CUSTOMER my wire transfers are done at no charge and I get a PREMIER BANKER who takes care of my transfers. On the 15th of every month she wires to my BKK account my pension funds. I dont have to think about it she handles it for me.

Also when I use my BOA ATM card it at no charge.

My suggestion is for you to contact the BOA and request to be a premier customer. It works for me and I have been doing it for 3 years.

  18. I have just returned from USA after hooking up a 129 USD Slingbox to my TIVO what a great cheap easy to use device.

Life in Thailand just got a while lot better and cheaper!

How do you operate a Tivo here?

The TIVO is in the states and you operate it from here.
