  1. I'd like an example of "phrase of the day"

How about this gem: FOX NEWS INTERNAL MEMO: "Be On The Lookout For Any Statements From The Iraqi Insurgents...Thrilled At The Prospect Of A Dem Controlled Congress"...

    See also, http://www.poynter.org/forum/?id=thememo :

...the roots of FNC's day-to-day on-air bias are actual and direct. They come in the form of an executive memo distributed electronically each morning, addressing what stories will be covered and, often, suggesting how they should be covered. To the newsroom personnel responsible for the channel's daytime programming, The Memo is the bible. If, on any given day, you notice that the Fox anchors seem to be trying to drive a particular point home, you can bet The Memo is behind it.
  2. Q. What does 'being spiritual' mean to me?

    A. It means you need to get right with the Lord.

The Pope told the crowds there were dangers in people finding their own religious routes.

"If it is pushed too far, religion becomes almost a consumer product," he said.

"People choose what they like, and some are even able to make a profit from it.

"But religion constructed on a 'do-it-yourself' basis cannot ultimately help us," he said.

(I'd post more but The Vatican has imposed strict copyright on all papal pronouncements.)

  3. Useless? Presidential Debates, The Factor, Shep Smith, Fox and Friends, Best Coverage on Issues.. don't be a hater. Respect others choices.

Stop watching. Start LIVING. (Especially if you watch FNC, cause the average age of their viewers is something like 71, so you probably don't have that much time left.)

  4. Why do westerners insist on saying the word "farang" is derogatory even after living long time in Thailand?

Is it because in the west people hate each other so much that they like to think of everything being offensive as long as it is not a praise?

Do they have a learning disability?

I find westerners take offense easily, don't they?

Who, besides you, is still debating this? The word "farang" is clearly comparable to the word "nigger":

"A neutral noun in the 17th century, nigger had, by 1830, become an 'influential' insult." (from the Amazon.com review of "Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word")

  5. Is it merely bad luck or can something be done?

    Two noted theologians weigh in:

"The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularise America, I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.' " -- Khun Jerry Falwell

"If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city. And don't wonder why he hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for His help because He might not be there." -- Khun Pat Robertson

  6. The whole aspect of recieving free citizenship just because it is born in the 'right' side of the border, including if the parents are illegal aliens, are a very weird stance. And should probably be revoked imho. It's not really helping with the whole 'illegal aliens' problem.

Sir, you make a cogent argument but I am confused: are you talking about illegal brown people from South of the border (i.e. Mexicans) or illegal brown people from North of the border (i.e. Hmongs)?

Please provide your ancestry going back 7 generations so we may verify your hereditary claim!

  7. Hello all. Does the trerm cross-contamination exist in Thai? The context is food, I was in subway earlier watching someone handle raw meat and then go onto handle bread and vegetables without changing her gloves. I did manage to explain to her that she shouldn't do that but when she asked why, I couldn't explain myself properly.

Does the term "germ theory of disease" exist in Thai?

  8. Too bad. It is nice and clean and profesional looking and it has a good menu, but the food is absolutely tasteless and it is ALWAYS empty.

Does anyone have an idea how they can keep staying open in such an expensive spot? Why doesn't the owner get someone to help him make better food (Hire the owner of the Duke's to do it)?

Sounds like so many businesses in Thailand, but don't bother looking for answers on this board (unless someone here knows that the owner of that shop is the building owner's brother-in-law, or something like that).

  9. I have seen quite a few advertisements for Mystery shoppers here in Thailand.

    It's a scam.

Why do people assume that being a native speaker makes you qualified to teach, and by the same token, do they assume that they (the advocates of this foolishness) can effectively teach their own language to a person? as a second language?

The teacher pretends to teach and the student pretends to learn.

Thats my rant for the day. I'm home alone, bored and looking for a job.

    Welcome to Thailand!

  10. Some more questions:

There's the main lottery - tickets come in pairs('kuu')

Why do they come in pairs? Is it possible to buy a single ticket, or half a pair? If I cut the ticket in two is it still valid?

    ...for about 85 baht.

The face price is 80 baht and it's marked up by the seller, right? Some sellers offer them for 85, some for 90, some for more. Are tickets bought from higher priced sellers luckier? Is it bad form to haggle with the seller to get a lower price?

You win if you match the number with the ones published twice monthly. The results are shown in the newspapers.

When, where and in which newspapers? The sellers also sell a list of the winning numbers -- will they let me look at that list without buying it?

What happens to the tickets that don't get bought? Do the sellers have to return the unsold tickets all they way to Bangkok before the drawing?

    Thanks!
