dunno...I learned all I know about aerobics about 35 years ago when it was popular, maybe there's been sum recent developments since then regarding the benefits derived therefrom...

of course, one wouldn't recommend prolonged vigorous exercise to someone who's out of shape and otherwise unused to the associated exertion under any circumstances. However it is reasonable to recommend a suitable activity such as walking and progressing toward a more vigorous activity as the results allow...that is, of course, if one is ambulatory...

if elevated heart rate for 30 minutes 3 times per week is no longer required to obtain benefit from regular aerobic exercise and the associated cardiovascular system performance improvement please enlighten with further discussion...

Try Googling "tabata intervals" for a start.

  2. "Grill" is always a good one, seems so easy to the farang mouth.

My wife has fun saying my last name with both an L and an R! That being said, her English is very good. She came to the U.S. with a very limited vocabulary (in 1976) but she has worked at coming proficient. I've NEVER spoken broken G.I. English to her, and she always wants me to correct her pronunciation. She now reads and writes pretty well as well. It's going to be a big change when we retire because my language learning skills are next to zero. I lived in Berlin for six years and the only thing I can do in Deutsch is order beer and ask where the toilet is! :o

  3. Thanks Galong, All advice is greatly appreciated. These Egg substitutes are actually 100% egg, with eout the Yoke which contains the Cholesteral but still carries all the benefits of the high protien content.

Not true. The yolk is a major source of nutrients including protein. It really gets a bad rap because of the overall fear of cholesterol that is slowly but surely being debunked by research.

Here's a breakdown of an egg's nutrient content. REAL FOOD always trumps something man made.

  4. As promised, the latest on the basic Concept 2 rowing machine.

I took delivery this afternoon, from the Fedex man, the cost of the tax etc in total was 5130 baht. This means, when using 33 baht to the dollar, the total coat was some 42,000 baht, which is some 50,000 baht cheaoer than some people in BKK were charging.

I'm a little late to this thread but I agree that the Concept 2 is the way to go. Rowing is a great exercise. I don't do a lot of distance on one but I use it for interval training and it is great. One of the best things about a C2 is that you provide the power--no running up the electricity bill to use it. You can't say the same for a treadmill. Good ones have fairly large motors that will cost you to operate.

My wife has worked at a fitness center for 13 years. The treadmills, ellipticals, stair climbers, lifecycles, etc. that they use have all needed major maintenance or replacement over that time. The C2, however, could star in one of those battery commercials...it keeps going, and going, and going..... :o

  5. I like to use the iGoogle homepage, this gives me easy access to my email, the news feeds i like to keep in touch with and also a few other feeds i keep an eye on. Plus its nice and fast and has the search box at the top. You can customise it with your own 'theme' if you want to.

That's what I was referring to (but you said it better). :o I have several RSS feeds of bloggers I read as well as news & sports.

  6. Of the many reasons my wife wants to retire in Thailand, the top is that she doesn't want to end up in any kind of "old folk's home." She knows she can return to her village and be cared for until her dying day. She says I'll get the same treatment but I'm counting on being the first to kick! :o

  7. Well, there is a conspiracy theory about everything,

No conspiracy theory here -- I'm talking about well researched books by respected authors. If you want to read a pretty convincing argument for how we get bad advice based on shaky science, read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. It's not an easy read but it's an eye opener.

  8. A couple weeks ago I was feeling some chest pain and numbness in my left arm. I made an appointment for the next morning with my doctor, but then decided I better go to the ER and get checked out. They did an EKG, blood test, and an x-ray but it all came out negative. The next day my doctor diagnosed it as muscle spasms in my back that were affecting nerves (resulting in the arm numbness). But he told me I did absolutely the right thing by going in to the ER. He has scheduled me for a stress test next month.

    we meet again

    get over here

sell the house - ditch the junk

come over and play - golf among other things

    things change fast

do it now while you still believe you can

[sitting over a putt doesnt make it go in]

Believe me, I love to be there now; however, sometimes you gotta play the cards you are dealt. My grandkids didn't get to choose their parents but they have us. So it's going to be "Congratulations on graduating high school, dear...now give us a ride to the airport!"

But golf (and other things) will come. Meanwhile I have fond memories of the 2001 Thai Amateur Championship:

  10. Also, most of the literature out there names common oatmeal (not instant) as a good cholesterol-reducing item to include in your regular diet.

There's also a lot of literature out there that makes a good case for the whole cholesterol scare being a scam based on shaky science, and that the true benefactors of statins are drug company shareholders.

  11. I'm about six years out from retirement and the big move. Sometimes I look in my garage at the boxes of "stuff" and wonder what I'm going to do with it all. I guess I'll sell what I can, see if my kids want anything, and eventually put the stuff on the street with a "free" sign. I hope to to have a nice chunk of cash from the sale of my home to help with the transition. It's still a fairly long way off but I'm sure it will be here before I know it!!

  12. If there is a thriving farang community in the area I think they must keep themselves to themselves, but there again you might be able to change all that.

There will be on more full time resident in 2014...and I'm bringing my clubs! :o

Donald, I built a house on the Phupimarn resort just outside of PakChong. I haven't actually seen the place with my own eyes but you can see some pictures on my website at davidclary.com. My brother-in-law oversaw the construction (and put his own residence up as collateral) and he was pleased with how it turned out. I'm planning on going for a visit in 2010.
