  1. i am traveling in china and southeast asia in june for 10 wks. whilst i get free t/insurance from my bank, this only covers me for a max. 31 days in any trip. how do the backpacking fraternity who take a 12 month vacation get cover. all replies greatfully received.

  2. i will be flying to hkg in june for an extende trip into macau,- china-v/nam laos -cam. and thailand. any info. on border crossing from china into v/nam would be appreciated

If you make your way to Kunming in Yunnan province you can catch a 12 hour bus to the border of Vietnam. I believe the town is called Heikou. The scenery is absolutely stunning so you may want a day bus vs the overnight bus. You may have to stay the night here depending on your bus arrival. There are a few hotel options here for around 150 Yuan a night. I am sure there are cheaper options but this hotel was a quick 2 minute walk from the bus station and 5 minute walk to the border crossing in the morning.

On the Vietnamese side of the river is the town Lao Cai. You can catch the train from here to Hanoi (very long ride of over 8 hours). I think buses are available as well. I would suggest you maybe visit Sapa first as it is only an hours drive away and stay here for a few nights. There is ample hiking and you can visit the numerous hill tribes that live in this hilly area. Well worth the visit.

Do not change money on the Chinese side of th border. There are money changers on the Vietnamese side who wont rip you off quite as much. :o Better yet make your way out of the immigration hall on arrival and change money at one of the many businesses that offer money exchange or use an ATM if you like.

Make sure and get your Vietnamese visa before you show up at the border. ANd keep in mind the Vietnamese visa is differnet than most. When you apply the dates you ask for are the dates the visa is good for. So plan your entry date will care so as not to waste part of your 30 days!!

    Hope this helps!

many thanks for the info. very helpfull,

  3. i am sick of trying to find reasonable priced flights from MAN- BKK, all the advertised prices displayed do not exist and this includes the ones advertised on thaivisa. the cheapest i was offered by all the popular t/agents for the above routing going out june 15 and returning 27 aug, was £515 with turkish airlines and the most expensive was £728 with etihad. so have booked with BA to fly MAN -HKG FOR A COST OF £408, with the same dates i require. i would like some info. on travel HKG-SAIGON. and BKK-HKG thank for any replies.

  4. just been checking flights from manchester to bkk for june through to september, crazy prices, £480+132 taxes. i have never paid this sort of money in my 17 years of visiting thailand this is an exorbitant rip off by the airlines. bearing in mind this is the low season in thailand i think its time for pastures new.

  5. What is in your opinion the best way for you to get to Pattaya from Bangkok

    I know a few

Taxi Private1800bt thai limo DO NOT USE THEY HAVE USUALLY BEEN WORKING ALL NIGHT AND SOMETIMES THE BASTAR-S FALL ASLEEP

    Taxi Meter900-1000

Mini-Bus NOT VIABLE UNLESS A FEW TRAVELING TOGETHER

Bus100 TO BKK EKAMIE THEN 90 TO PATTAYA THE 40 BY BAHT BUS TO HOTEL

TrainTAKES TO LONG YOU COULD WALK IT QUICKER.

BEST TAXIMETER GO UP TO DEPARTURES AND GET ONE THAT HAS JUST DROPPED OFF.

and I guess you could save yourself some money and hitch hike :o

Can someone please add the prices next to the methods of getting to Pattaya, and also your opinon on the best (As in price and comfort)

    Westy

  6. ASTRAL, i recognise the ammount of postings under your belt. i am quite sure you read the pattaya mail and must be quite aware of what goes on in SUNNEE PLAZA so it realy is incorrect for you to say this is a thing of the early 90s. walk down beach rd and take a good look at some of the young femals that are plying there trade, are you sure the even though the thai race are small and delicate in stature that they are all of the age of consent[ whatever that may be] the thai gov. turn a blind eye to prostitution and use a very insulting word for the unfotunate girls that sometime get picked up by the police the have thecheek to call them SERVICE WORKERS. LOOK AGAIN MY FRIEND AND LOOK CLOSELY,
