I came here because I was sent from Japan at 28 years old. At that age, of course I had a tickle in the bars.
You are saying I came here for sex and not to help complete the implementation of a new manufacturing system at a Japanese hard disk factory?
Sorry sir, I forgot to include those who were legitimately transferred here to work in the course of their career.
And then, after your job was done, did you pack up and go back home?

One could rightly say that any foreigner who came to the Kingdom and hooked up with a Thai woman (or man) came here for sex. Only those who came with a partner from their home country -- and never, ever got any action on the side from a local -- are exempt from that label. Any foreigner with a Thai partner who says they didn't come here for sex is a liar and/or in denial. The holier than thou attitude displayed by some folks around here is hypocritical at best.
Maybe they should create a new visa category: sexpat-in-training, minimum investment one baht gold chain, a pickup truck, and a Chang singlet ????

Personally, I've got no dog in this fight. I could be here on a marriage visa, a retirement visa, a visa for supporting Thai family (kids), or splurge for an Elite visa if I were so inclined. Obviously having some money makes things easier, especially in Thailand. Good on the lucky oldies who've escaped a dreary denouement in old Blighty.

A lot of it has to do with the strict hierarchical social structures here.
Yes, there really are that many. I have lived in a major NE city for many years and without a doubt, the older guys came here for the sex.
That's as good a reason as any to come here, no? What harm does it inflict upon the country? Happy old guy spending his pension money on Khon Kaen Lek and her family. Some of them even get more than a meager 40k Thb/month farang English teacher wages.

They don't bother me in the slightest. I was just saying that because there are so many of these types, compared to other countries, that the Thai Immigration policy must be different to others.
I get what you're saying but don't understand the rationale. What horrible harm do these many (are there really so many?) sex-crazed old codgers inflict upon this country that it needs to protect itself with specifically tailored immigration laws?

I've lived in various parts of Thailand, including a couple years in Bangkok and a few years upcountry. Never actually lived in Pattaya, but I do have a place not too far from there.
I'm not 70 and not on a pension, but have nothing against those who are.
Point is, everyone has their own ways and means of living as an expat in Thailand. Please answer the question: why do the older gents who've gotten a new lease on life with a younger woman bother you so much?

I looked into OZ citizenship when I was younger but it was much harder than in Thailand, unless I married a local.
Why not just remain a citizen of the place you were born -- was it that bad?

Same rung as whom?
What BS, do you really think a retired 70-year old taxi driver that comes here and marries a peasant girl half his age should get citizenship?
Can't you see that Thailand has a unique situation here with the sexpats and has to have rules like no land to protect the country.
Maybe should get together in our Chang singlets and protest.
I and most Thai folks I know would probably rather see the aforementioned 70 year old pensioner, especially if he's the jai dee sort, become a Thai citizen in due course, than see a pompous, uppity, ageist twit who couldn't hack it back where he came from singing the Thai national anthem.
That's how it works in most Western countries; marry a citizen and become a citizen yourself after a prescribed time period.
By the way, why such an axe to grind with older fellas who still have a sex drive?

I would say discretionary spend from idle shopping is on hold for the foreseeable until we see how this pans out. It's boring and tedious at the best of times and now I have a reason to tell the missus to stop !
She'll have a clever response, probably to the effect of "we're all going to die soon, so let me spend it all now" to counter your best efforts.

I rode all over the world for 49 yrs and 14 of those were here in Thailand without a scratch until Oct 2018.
Hung up my helmet = Done~!!!
Dont become a statistic.
That's interesting. Would you mind describing the incident that happened in Oct 2018 that caused you to hang it up? Just curious, because my riding history closely parallels yours except for the last part. And my 45 years of riding has included some broken bones, bumps and bruises, all my own fault for not properly reading the road conditions.

I have done quite a few GoPro Vids on my moto's here in Thailand and posted them and there will always be a few that will comment about all the laws you broke or the things you did improperly. Riding and cutting traffic is pretty standard fare back in the states albeit its done far more here. But that's life on small cc moto's.
As for the vid itself, a bit long but I understand. I have done some long ones then cleaned them up or sped them up a bit to shorten them. Actually doing some in hyperlapse make for some good laughs.
Looks like a fun ride albeit I would prefer to head out of the city and ride around the mountain roads.
Look forward to more.
Thanks for your comments. I posted knowing there would be both positive and negative reactions, but figured that guys like you and me would take it for what it is: an experienced rider using his bike handling skills plus knowledge of local driving customs and road conditions to get from point A to point B in the smoothest, most efficient way possible. I welcome all comments with no offense taken.
My observation of local riders indicates that Thais tend to ride either too slow or too fast, with very few able to find the appropriate speed for the conditions. That said, I'm always impressed by their ability to ride while balancing a propane tank, 3 family members, talking on the phone, and carrying an umbrella in the rain, simultaneously.

I saw "your" picture which looks like a pretty young girl.
So I thought: Ok, let's have a look at that video. I looked a minute here and there, just clicking a couple of times to get an idea what it's about.
And then I saw that hand which didn't look like the hand of a pretty young girl.
And that inspired me to that comment. And then the last comment at that time mentioned "old man" so I answered to that one.
Rest assured, I won't try to identify your hands or you in other pictures or videos. ????
It's all good. I haven't changed my avatar since 2004 or 2005 when I joined this forum. You can tell what was on my mind back then, and it hasn't changed very much despite getting married and having 2 fabulous kids. In my heart I'm still 21 but now I walk this Earth in a skinny, sun weathered 58 year old body.
Now you know the truth, jing jing ????

At first I reckoned you were referring to the previous chap who wished me dead, while appreciating my unconscious habit of keeping a finger poised over the front brake lever. Now it seems you were actually hand-stalking me.
Weird, but not surprising around these parts.

For someone with years of experience riding, you did not learn much courtesy.
Yielding to pedestrians in Thailand will get you run over from behind.

For your viewing pleasure, a longish (20 mins+) video of my usual commute from the cesspit.
I expect at least a few comments from the resident schoolmarms and traffic cops regarding violations of the vehicle code, however in my own defense I will say that I've been riding motorcycles since age 12, street licensed since 14, and all over Thailand since 2004. Back in California my trusty steed is a Ducati 900SS; this ain't my first rodeo.

My vote goes to Sandorini, or Ios in the Greek Cyclades archipelago. I will also nod to the beach in Tel-Aviv, especially at night or just as the Sabbath (Friday later afternoon) arrives. I loved Rio de Janiero too and Salvador Bahia. Wild. Really. Got my "package" grabbed by roaming packs of teenage girls. There's a tiny beach on Rapa Nui, (Easter Island) that was unforgettable, with the moai staring down at us, "guarding" the harbor. Peaceful and remote, everyone thrilled to be there, a once-in-a-lifetime visit to Earth's most remotely inhabited shore - all of a sudden, family with strangers. Cape Cod ain't bad neither. Thanks for your list. Noted.
Granted the Eastern Seaboard region of the Gulf of Thailand is nowhere near the top of anyone's list of World Class Beaches, but just a few hours drive and a short ferry ride from the cesspit lies Koh Chang, which still has it's share of natural beauty and certainly rates a visit.
The Andaman Sea coast of Thailand from Phang Nga, Trang, Krabi, Khao Lak, with all the famously picturesque islands and beaches along the way to the Malaysian border should meet any sane person's definition of World Class tourist destinations. Any argument to the contrary would be nothing short of absurd.
My personal list of favorites, some of which I've visited and others I've only seen in pictures, would include Aruba, St. Maarten, the French and Italian Rivieras, Ibiza, Mallorca, Rio de Janeiro (the Girl from Ipanema!), and the list goes on.
Pattaya Beach Road circa 2000 certainly had it's World-Class tourist attractions, but the beach itself was never one of them...

20m of 'em already this year. More than ever. Goose is still cramming hard.
Quite so.
I notice the press release made no mention of any desire to attract more tourists from North America, UK, Western Europe, or Australia. It would seem Thailand has moved on and has no need for those of us who continually complain about how horrible Thailand and Thai people are, yet malinger here like a stubborn case of syphilis, or bleat from afar regardless.
Let's get over it already. Thailand obviously has.
