No loss of licence for DUI? A Mate just got pinged in Australia for changing lanes without due care. Fined A$390 or roughly 9000 baht. I imagine a DUI is going to set you back a lot more than 10,000 baht.

My Thai driver license is expired so I had two confessions to make, which sowed some confusion but a friendly Thai helped me out by explaining that part and then the judge and me both kind of laughed it off. Hence the smiling I mentioned earlier.

Did some bargaining at the police station

This my friend is your problem....NEVER NEVER NEVER.... Let yourself go to the Police Station.......ALWAYS pay before the Police Station if at all possible...

I did all the bargaining I could outside the police station but it was no option at all. Straight into the police truck, everything I said got completely ignored. It appeared that the bargaining was supposed to happen at the police station with one of their seniors. Likely there was a police senior on the spot that kept an eye on things.

Maybe because it's peak season they didn't want to give off the wrong impression to genuine tourists.

Many years ago I read in one of the local papers about the signing of papers that you mentioned in the OP, everything in Thai and with no explanation. The problem is that one or more of these is likely to be a confession, and in a serious case, perhaps if you're accused of selling drugs or worse, you probably wouldn't want to sign that. But if you won't sign then they just leave you locked up, so it's all a bit Catch 22. Did you find out afterwards what the papers you signed were?

I only signed papers at court, didn't give it a close look but it just looked like some formality instead of a confession. Why else answer questions from the judge if the confession is already signed. Same like when you go to immigration and put your signature on all the documents. If it was a more serious case I would've gotten a lawyer of course.

I heard that the snakes out there eat all the mosquitoes, lol.

Lol, maybe you have a point in terms of the geckos eating mosquitoes. I see quite a lot of them there, didn't have them in my condo at 12-high.

10k baht would have fixed it at the roadside. I've heard of people getting fined 20k in court and ordered to do some sort of course. You got off lightly.

Lesson learned, always have 10k available if you're going to be naughty. They will let you use nearby ATM.

Also, Christmas/New Year, the police are particularly hot on the Darkside for drink/driving.

Yes, that was a little odd, police said I should get 20k from the ATM as the fine could vary from 8500 up to 20k, I wonder what that depends upon because it sounded very strange to me. Judge appeared like a reasonable man, he even smiled, but as said earlier, no fooling around.

Mata Hari has been closed for several years.

Wow very surprised by that, shows how often I go out eating to not even know that. A guy from Belgium ran it and it appeared he was doing okay, though never very busy the few times we've been there the service and food was great but on average 2000 baht/person easily.

I do not want to be the one to tell you but it’s not over yet. A fax was sent to immigration also, it’s a procedure.

Did you get your passport back yet? If not , it’s not going to be as easy as you think.

You may also require a letter from court stating judge does not oppose your visa extension when it’s comes to renewing.

Only the police kept my passport to make copies for documentation, they returned it to me before we went to court. No idea about a letter, I don't even have a receipt for the 8500 fine I paid in court.

Could well have been knocked unconscious by a careless jetski rider.

    Well, there you say something.

Back when I had a jet ski of my own I sometimes went from Bang Saray to Jomtien Beach, quite a stretch I know, and the sea does get a little wild near Ocean Marina, but that's not the point.

The point is that some lunatics near Bang Saray swim at least 150-200 meters off-coast and it was a very close call or I would've hit this snorkeling idiot as you can hardly spot them in between the waves and them with their face down. He probably must've thought the same, what the hell is a jet ski doing here.

Any place is a good place to eat a great steak, where to find a great steak is a little more difficult...

(I was going to say tougher but caught myself)

Mata Hari and Bruno serve great steaks, but they are both located at Thappraya road, not cheap but quality is never cheap, wondering if there's something comparable on the dark side.

The OP is perhaps referring to the "fun side" of Pattaya, which has cut it's own throat with extortionate prices and bored girls.

Just because the sidewalks are full of Chinese/ Indians/ other ethnicities does not mean the bars and other entertainment facilities are doing well.

What are those extortionate prices you are talking about, you have some examples? In the gay areas it's still 1000-1500 baht for short-time and 2000-2500 for long-time. Bar fines range from 300 for a regular bar up to 500 for some go-go bars, and drinks in my favorite go-go bar have gone up from 120 baht to 160 baht last night, I guess because it's peak season, while in the regular bars it's still 80-100 baht for a Heineken, and 100-120 baht for a boy drink. In Boystown it's more though, about 200-250 baht/drink but that comes with a show like Copa.

In other words nothing crazy, maybe it's different in the lady bars? Sometimes I frequent those as it's the only thing in East Pattaya,  very close to my home and drinks are priced same as I quoted, no idea about bar fines or fees for the girls/ladies, and actually I had some nice chats with some of them, not boring at all.

  11. Live here for a year now, not really a center but most bars are concentrated along a 1km road at Soi Khao Noi (part of Soi Khao Ta Lo I guess), I live in one of those villages an above poster mentioned, and they just opened a new bar exactly opposite of my village "Full Moon Bar 2", in this few hundred meter stretch there are about 6-8 bars and it won't get much busier than that.

About 500 meters further away we have Tops supermarket, they have an outdoor restaurant/bar and live music sporadically, and a small market, and some more bars. If there's a center that would be it I guess. The thing is, this outdoor restaurant with a stage for live music failed big time, I never see people sitting there and I'm a late grocery shopper, between 19:00-21:00 so at those times there should be people.

Only ladybars though, usually quiet, now a little bit busy because it's winter season, few more arrivals in the village, I think it's mostly foreigners that bought a house here and spend the winter here and hang out in the bar with some friends, most appear to already have a wife/girlfriend. In low-season it's a bit of a pathetic sight in those bars, older foreigners sitting there alone, just drinking to get away from the wife I guess ????

I just see Kaoboi summed it up well enough in his last sentence, from Tops both to the left and right a stretch of 1km of bars, more to the left then to the right when you're facing Tops.

I don't understand the reports who tell us its quite. I don't feel it that way, more people here than last December. But I do not stay in soi 6 or the bars. Very busy in the malls and restaurants . And crazy traffic as always.

It does look like sex-tourism is on the down, especially in the gay areas, but other than that it's very busy on the road, and all the bars at Pattaya beach road were completely packed.
