I explain it to you as easy as possible:
Thailand: People are poor. Many people want to go to rich countries to work illegally.
Western countries: People are rich. They usually don't go to poor countries to work illegally.
So western people can stay in Thailand more easily than Thai people in western countries.
In my eyes we are all equal no matter where we are from . Therefore just because I am a farang I do not expect an easy ride.

How much is the equivelent of 800.000 baht in your own countries currency ? Could people from another country come and live in your country for that amount deposited in a bank account ?
Not in the UK where I am from. What is is it with people who think there own country should be tough on immigration but when they are in Thailand they play the poor victim?

this topic is not about cars, so its very off topic and subject to mods intervention , however next time i jump in my old S class. i will make note of asking my driver of that which you are discussing, i will also ask the wife and daughter if what you say is true in their new cars too
She has a wildtrak pick up and the daughter has a swift, so you might get one out of the three..
They all have round wheels though, that i do know
Standard wheels for a car in Thailand for Thai people are indeed round, however for farang they give you a car with square wheels.
When I complained they told me I had to pay extra for round wheels. I was pissed off a bit but agreed to pay the 2 tier pricing system.I am so glad as them square wheels were a bit clunky and <deleted> up my back!

Exactly ! I moved here at 49 and at 50 got my non o and then retirement extention. I do not get access to my local government pension until I am 55 but have more than enough in savings. My state pension is not until I am 67 so it is a good while away.
Planning is everything!

You may be lucky enough to be able tie up 800,000 Baht for five months every year without needing to spend of it, in which case bully for you.
There might be others who have committed themselves to Thailand by buying themselves a condo to enjoy their retirement in, so don’t have a spare 800,000 Baht they can leave untouched in the bank.
There might be those who’ve retired here under the previous conditions and didn’t expect the goalposts to be moved.
One wonders if those who can demonstrate they have the current required monthly income might be the next to have the goalposts moved.
For the life of me I really don’t understand the reasoning for needing to leave 800,000 Baht in the bank for five months of the year when it’s supposed to be evidence that you have sufficient to live on.For me the money in the bank for my extention of stay came first and then having a house built and buying a car came second.
Not a bully for you aproach but a common sence aproach.

in your Benz maybe but not in a Toyota pick up
I do not have a Benz or a Toyota pick up. My car has AC and a heater. Maybe you should look into new cars in Thailand and you will realise they also have round wheels! 55

you will need a heater installing, the odometer reset from Km to MPH and and an MOT, then pay the import tax and VAT then you will be ok
Modern cars come with a heater and air con 555 The odometer can be reset with a press of a button and to be honest my post was tongue in cheek as I have no intention of leaving Thailand!

800.000 baht is not very much if you genuinely have retired and have committed to living in Thailand.
Maybe the people getting worried do not really have enough to retire here? I know many people worry about the exchange rates,if that is the case again maybe they are not financially ready for retirement here?
I am far from being well off but I have put enough money in a Thai account to ensure a worry free retirement.
Interest rates here are no worse than my home country. I am not wealthy enough to speculate and possibly lose on the investment of stocks and shares . Therefore I see no reason not to have savings here.

Time for one of those polls, how many retirees here could put 800K in the bank as dead money, in addition show 65K a month in income. That appears to be what they are saying. In addition an extra 4 visits a year to immigration to show you have not spent spent the 800K,seriously?
I do not see it as dead money I see it as the means to secure a quick, worry free gauranteed extension of stay for retirement purposes.
The interest is at least no worse than the rate in my home country and as others have mentined it is there if an emergency crops up.

Not sure where you are from but to clarify, if its built from masonry and concrete its a wall, if its wood, steel shera and a temporary structure, its a fence.
A fence is also some who deals in stolen goods.
Now, what is your query?
At the front of our garden we have something that is built from masonry, concrete, metal and wood. I used to call it our garden wall but am now unsure what to call it. Should I call it a fence topped wall ?

You mentioned at a previous school you used Beckers Thai for beginners. So why not try Beckers Thai for intermediate and then her Thai for advanced books.

My girlfriend who I live with here in Thailand has just submitted her application and we submitted about 70 photos printed on about 30 standard A4 sheets of paper.
When the person at Trendy who assisted her sorting the documents into the right catergories helped her he made no mention of the photos not being needed.
They are essential in proving a legit relationship and they were all scanned as part of her application.

I have a toothache and think I need an old filling drilled out and redone. I am looking for a good dentist recomendation as google searches do bring up many dentists but I do not know if they are any good.
Does anyone know the prices for dental fillings?

As a kid living in Norwich I used to go in his fishing tackle shop in Bridewell Alley Norwich.
It was thought of by us as an elite speciman hunters shop 555 However I did buy a nice pair of Tench rods from there at 60 quid a piece . That was a lot of money for a 16 year old in his first job 36 years ago! In fact it was a whole weeks wages.

Thats silly, they all speak Thai, they just choose to speak Lao.
I posted that the frustrating thing was they do not speak Thai not that they could not speak Thai.
My point is is frustrating being able to speak Thai and not being able to understand people in my village when they are speaking Lao. I continually have to remind them I can speak Thai but not Lao.
When I talk with them of course they can understand Thai but as you say they choose not to.
Issaan Lao is natural for them but not for central Thai. When there are Lao speaking Issaan people on the TV they are subtitled for Thai people.
I am told that many older people in the village are embarrassed when speaking Thai as it is not their first language and they do not want to come over as being stupid if they pronounce things wrong.
I alway reply that me the farang should be the one thinking like that and not them.

100% depends where you live. I've seen farang practicing thai in busy English pubs on lower Sukhumvit and the waitress being seriously pissed off because she is to busy to be annoyed by some farang trying to impress and failing
If you live in isaan then you damn well better know your thai if only to over hear your extended family planning your demise and claiming your house.I have been learning Thai for 27 years and can speak rather well. For over 2 years now I have lived in Isaan and the frustrating thing is they do not speak Thai they speak Lao.

Before when I was on a tourist visa I was quoted 35000฿ from an agent to get me a non o and retirement extension.
I declined and done it myself at Immigration.
When I lived in Pattaya all the expats except one used an agent and did not have money in the bank.

When I first began to learn Thai I realised if I wanted to learn to speak the language I would need to be able to read Thai as the Romanising of Thai just does not work well.
