Retired Nato general Petr Pavel has been elected as the new president of the Czech Republic, seeing off his populist challenger Andrej Babis.

The 61-year-old took 57.6% of the vote, initial results released by the state statistics office showed.

Mr Babis - who served as prime minister between 2017 and 2021 - conceded defeat in a speech to supporters soon after the results were announced.

The ex-general will replace Milos Zeman, whose second term ends in March.

The second-round runoff between Mr Babis and Mr Pavel was portrayed as a contest between populist oligarchy and liberal democracy.

The elections' results follow an ill-tempered campaign marred by alleged death threats and disinformation.

Bodycam footage of 29-year-old father Tyre Nichols calling for his mother as he is beaten by police in Memphis has been released.

Mr Nichols died in hospital three days after being pulled over for alleged reckless driving. He was pepper sprayed, kicked and punched by five officers who have since lost their jobs and been charged with his murder.

Video of the arrest, taken from body cameras and a surveillance camera mounted to a pole, was released in four instalments made public on Friday.

Israeli police have arrested 42 people in connection with a deadly shooting at a synagogue in East Jerusalem on Friday.

Seven people were killed, and at least three more injured, in the deadliest attack of its kind in years.

Two people were also injured on Saturday in a separate attack outside the Old City.

Israeli police said the gunman in Saturday's attack was a 13-year-old boy.

They said he had been "neutralised", but did not give further details.

The attack took place in the Silwan neighbourhood, just outside Jerusalem's Old City. The injured pair were a father and son who were in a "moderate to serious condition", police added.

In response to the two attacks, authorities have positioned officers from a counter-terrorism unit "permanently" in the Jerusalem area to "promptly respond to exceptional events whenever necessary".

Rebel police officers rioted in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince on Thursday in protest at the killing of more than a dozen colleagues by criminal gangs.

The rioting officers blame the government for not taking action.

Overnight, Israel said it carried out airstrikes against Palestinian militants in Gaza after two rockets were fired into Israel. No group in Gaza has claimed responsibility for the rockets, both of which were intercepted by Israeli air defence systems.
