  1. Chris Hipkins has been sworn in as New Zealand's 41st prime minister.

The 44-year-old was formally appointed to the role in Wellington, a week after Jacinda Ardern's shock resignation.

Ms Ardern, 42, had said she no longer has "enough in the tank" to lead the country. The country's governor-general Cindy Kiro accepted her formal resignation on Wednesday.

Mr Hipkins built a reputation as the minister who led New Zealand's Covid-19 strategy.

The multiverse-skipping sci-fi indie hit "Everything Everywhere All at Once" led this year's Oscar nominations as Hollywood heaped honors on big-screen spectacles like "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" a year after a streaming service won best picture for the first time.

Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan's "Everything Everywhere All at Once" landed a leading 11 nominations on Tuesday.

The 10 movies up for best picture are: "All Quiet on the Western Front"; "Avatar: The Way of Water"; "The Banshees of Inisherin"; "Elvis"; "Everything Everywhere All at Once"; "The Fabelmans"; "Tár"; "Top Gun: Maverick"; "Triangle of Sadness"; "Women Talking."

  3. Several senior Ukrainian officials have resigned as President Volodymyr Zelensky begins a shake-up of personnel across his government.

A top adviser, four deputy ministers and five regional governors left their posts on Tuesday.

Their departures come as Ukraine launches a broad anti-corruption drive.

Recently, authorities have seen bribery claims, reports of officials buying food at inflated prices and one figure accused of living a lavish lifestyle.

Senior aide Mykhailo Podolyak said Mr Zelensky was responding to a "key public demand" that justice should apply to everyone.

The president has already banned state officials from leaving the country unless on authorised business.

  4. The city of Monterey Park, California, had planned to gather in celebration this week. Instead, they joined together in mourning as the community held a vigil for 11 people murdered at a local dance hall just two days before.

Residents and leaders of the city's Asian-American community organised a candlelight memorial outside the city hall on Monday evening to honour the victims, holding a powerful three-minute moment of silence and reciting prayers from a range of faiths.

"Our joyous Lunar New Year celebration was turned utterly upside down into tragedy and fear," said Representative Judy Chu. "We must support one another and work our way through this."

  5. Across the country, there's a silent frustration brewing about an age-old practice that many say is getting out of hand: tipping.

Some fed-up consumers are posting rants on social media complaining about tip requests at drive-thrus, while others say they're tired of being asked to leave a gratuity for a muffin or a simple cup of coffee at their neighborhood bakery. What's next, they wonder — are we going to be tipping our doctors and dentists, too?

The office did not give more details on the incident after tweeting earlier Monday that law enforcement officials were responding to the shooting.

  8. Church of England bishops have refused to back a change in teaching to allow priests to marry same-sex couples, sources have told BBC News.

They met on Tuesday to finalise their recommendations after five years of consultation and debate on the Church's position on sexuality.

Their proposal will be debated at the Church's equivalent of a parliament - the General Synod - next month.

BBC News spoke to several bishops present at the meeting who said the Church's teaching that Holy Matrimony is only between one man and one woman would not change and would not be put to a vote.

But the Church confirmed "prayers of dedication, thanksgiving or for God's blessing" on same-sex couples will be offered following a civil marriage or partnership.
