  1. As stated above, it is the uncertainty about what the impact will be that is the big problem rather than anything else. As a UK retiree whose sole source of income being brought in to Thailand is from a company pension, it seems what I bring in could be taxed in Thailand. This is despite it already being taxed in the UK. So, unless things are clarified before the end of the year, I am currently thinking how to avoid bringing potentially taxable income in to Thailand during 2024. Currently the annual amount the Thai wife and I spend in Thailand on day to day living is around 1,000,000 baht. There are no planned large purchases next year so I'll aim to stick to that amount for 2024. I can probably bring 600,000 baht of this in to Thailand before the end of 2023 which I think means it will not be impacted by the new directive. I will bring in the other 400,000 in 2 chunks of 200,000. One sent to my bank account and one sent to the wife's account. I believe this will keep us both below the level at which any tax is payable. Then, if it is needed, we can both file Thai tax declarations in early 2025 with no tax to pay. Hopefully things will become clearer, if not by the end of this year then by early 2025!
  2. Not fully working in Korat. Thai websites seem to be working but a bit slow. But can’t connect to anything international
  3. Can you get a rental overseas using a Thai 2 year license? I was previously told (in the UK though not the US) that only the 5 year license could be used as the 2 year one is considered "probationary".
  4. I don't normally get involved with arguments on the internet..............BUT! As I said when I responded to your earlier post I am not complaining. I merely pointed out to another poster who claimed that "locals discount" happened in other countries that, in most other countries, "locals" means people who live locally irrespective of their nationality. In Thailand the dual pricing seems to be based almost entirely on nationality and, from a personal perspective, I think that is wrong. You obviously think it is OK which is fine. You might even be happy if countries in Europe introduced an extra "darkies" fee for visitors but I would oppose that too. I'm absolutely certain that "they" don't read here and I'm also certain that the dual pricing won't change in my lifetime. As I stated previously I do sometimes pay the extra foreigner fee if I want to see the site/attraction on offer.
  5. You seem to be of the opinion that non-Thais should just put-up and shut-up if they disagree with what happens here. I don't agree with that. Anyone should feel free to express an opinion as to what is right or wrong, especially on a forum such as this.
  6. But do they charge someone living locally extra just because they are foreign, even if they have lived locally for years?
  7. I renewed my extension last week and experience was similar to the OP. They wanted a 3 month statement this year though instead of the previously required 2 months. The list of requirements they gave when I got the blank forms from them still states 2 months as the requirement but it was accompanied by a little slip of paper, written entirely in Thai, which stated 3 months was required. so I just got a 3 month one from the bank and all was fine. Just to add, the only problem this year was when I went to the bank, the green one in Terminal 21, it was no longer there! It had been closed and they hadn’t seen fit to tell me. Had to ring their call centre to find out where my account was now held.
  8. Well thanks for all the comments and I agree that I should have tested for a live connection rather than assuming it was dead just because the circuit breaker was off. Lesson learned and the tester is now on the list for my next visit to Mr DIY!
  9. Hi. No I am very much an amateur and don't have anything to test a circuit, I just assumed that "off" at the circuit breaker meant off at the shower. Disconnecting the 3 wires in the shower unit and then reconnecting them later is about as complicated as I want to get! I just want to make sure, if I have to do something similar in the future, that I can do that as safely as realistically possible.
  10. I recently noticed a water leak from inside one of our shower water heaters. So, I turned off the power at the breaker for that circuit, checked the heater was no longer working when the water flowed which, rightly or wrongly, indicated to me that the power was off, and then removed the shower unit which was taken to a local shop to get the leak fixed. Picked up the repaired box today and have just reinstalled it. Everything now seems OK. However, when reconnecting the wires to the shower I accidentally touched the neutral and earth together. This tripped the main incoming circuit breaker for the house which surprised me as I’d assumed I was working on a “dead” bit of wiring due to the breaker for the circuit being off. Is what happened when the neutral and earth touched normal or does it mean there is a fault somewhere? I had always thought that turning off the breakers for a circuit meant it was safe to work on but maybe I should be turning off the main breaker instead of just the one for an individual circuit?
  11. I was in Central Mall earlier and saw the NETA V. Nice looking little car and seemed incredibly cheap at 549,000. Have been looking at reviews since coming home and the common theme seems to be that it is good for city driving but a bit ropey on the longer distance driving. I was surprised at the sales girl's claim that the 38KW battery is capable of 380KM range although this seems to be backed up by the info available online. I was also surprised when she said neither the driver seat height or the steering wheel position was adjustable because when I sat in it I had to put the seat all the way back just to get my knees below the steering wheel and, having done that, my legs couldn't reach the pedals! I will be changing the current car during the coming months and am considering anything up to around 750,000 baht as I'm a bit mean with the money and don't really aspire to anything more expensive. I haven't got it to any detailed look at possibilities yet or visited showrooms and arranged test drives. Typically we only do around 15,000 KM a year, 90% of which is journeys under 50KM with 4 or 5 longer trips per year. The current car is an Almera which has been totally reliable for the past 6 years of ownership and fits well with my dead boring, conservative driving style. So a new version of that is on the "possibles" list, along with the Toyata Yaris Ativ and the Mazda 2. I am tempted though to go full electric this time and, so far, have been mainly focused on the MG EP Plus which seems to tick most of my boxes, subject to the price of the soon to be released revamped model. The NETA V though has piqued my interest now and, subject to me being able to fit in to it, could go the "possibles" list. So, does anyone own one and, if so, can you share your experiences? In particular is the driving position adjustable in any way? And how close to the advertised one charge driving range do you get? Cheers for any feedback.
  12. Hi. Try the D Hotel which is always spotlessly clean in my experience. Also nice and quiet.
  13. I think you have the numbers wrong. I haven't seen anywhere near that number of abstentions published. Press reports say In all, 211 Tory MPs voted they had confidence in the PM's leadership while 148 voted against him. Having said that the bloke is a P***k and should resign!
  14. I've done my last 5 "retirement" extensions in Korat, using the 800,000 in bank method, and have never been asked for any proof of where the money has come from. As long as the account has more than 800,000 they don't seem to have a problem with its' source. I also supply 1. A copy of the past 12 months of bank book pages. They only bother to look at the most recent 2 months' worth of information. Three years ago I only give them the 2 months' worth and they told me they wanted the full year!! 2. The usual bank letter stating the account balance on the day you apply for the visa. 3. In 2019 they started asking for a bank statement showing the last two months movement on the account. So I provide that as well now. Last time they compare this, line by line, with the bank book copies for some reason. 4. Copy of the yellow house book for the proof of where I live. Appreciate that immigration can and do ask different people for different things. A friend has to provide a 12 month bank statement as well as a 2 month one! Different to some places I have heard of, they also give me a new 90 day report receipt on the day I apply for the extension which resets the clock for that. There is also no need to prove you have kept the 800,000 in the bank account for the required 3 months after the application, or to prove you have kept the 400,000 for the entire year. I guess that is the reason they want the previous 12 months of bank book page copies but they don't actually bother checking it.
  15. Agree the Tops in Central doesn't have the best selection these days. Although noticed some Pukka pies and sausage rolls in there last week. The Makro Food Service store, a couple of KM along the 224 road from the turning to the immigration office has a few nice bits and pieces. Sausages, Cheeses and a variety of other imported goods. The Gourmet Market in The Mall in the city centre also has a few nice things although pricey. Best place I have found though is via https://www.nookiesdelights.3baht.net/. Great selection of tinned and frozen foods. Depending on exactly where you are, not too far from you if you want to visit, (take a cold box), and he also does deliveries to various places.
  16. I buy atorvastatin 20mg, amongst other things, from Medisafe in Bangkok. I order by email from them via [email protected] and they post it to me in Korat. Thai made brand called Lipostat at 324baht for 30.
  17. And happy to add that 30 minutes after getting to SHOW DC it is all done and dusted. Very well organised apart from the lack of notice that the venue had been changed
  18. Just arrived for my second AstraZeneca jab to find that the building where the first jab was given is closed. it is now being done at SHOW DC which is a mall just up the road from the hospital. So in the queue there now. Nice of them to not let me know beforehand!!!!
  19. There was nothing in the message or on the booking form to indicate I need to confirm the appointment so am just planning to turn up at the appointment time in the SMS. According to the email I booked through it is Astra Zeneca vaccine being used.
  20. I also got an overnight SMS for vaccine at TRIA. I believe it is a result of registering via the route below which was sent out by the British consular team.. The British Embassy has been informed that British nationals over the age of 18 have the opportunity to receive an AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccination at Piyavate Hospital in Bangkok between 25 and 29 August. Second vaccination 12 weeks later. Registration, on a first come first served basis, is through the following google docs form, https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe3h7dn4nVDNdNDD6ObyPYx6-H0mvE-nJ-RQjFigRrTNRUiqg/viewform?usp=sf_link. Registration closes on Sunday 22 August. Cost is THB 50. Numbers of vaccines are limited, so register now. If you are unsuccessful, we advise you to continue to register with the Thai Ministry of Public health, https://expatvac.consular.go.th/. 21. Have received the same rejection due to lack of visa information. I had the same problem as others in trying to upload 2 photos so just did the passport info page. Have now re-registered with a new email and by dragging and dropping in both photo's at the same time. The photo upload worked but the registration was rejected as the combination of name and passport had already been used. So have now removed a letter from my name and registered successfully. Will now wait for an email telling me my name is incorrect!
  22. I'm British so if something needs complaining about I just "TUT" very loudly. That's really telling them!!
