Have you seen any ICE automaker offering a 20 year warranty?

And you never will as ICE batteries are known as consumables as they are expected to degraded over a number of years some battery manufacturers do offer a 5 year warranty

The batteries last for twenty year, so never need replacing.

In the USA Nissan has chosen to buy back Nissan Leafs where the battery has degraded battery under warranty. more than the limit set in the owners manual

Not sure why they are buying  back instead of replacing the battery but from what i have read the buyback offers have been quite generous

as for batteries lasting twenty years I have seen a single manufacturer claim that and as far as i know I haven't seen a single manufacturer offering a 20 year battery warranty

We keep getting told that EV sales are collapsing and that the EV boom is over. Legacy manufacturers are going back to manufacturing hybrids, even if Toyota’s case they will probably be made by BYD.

BYD’s Sealion 6 DM-i Plug-in Hybrid is set to launch in Thailand on August 8, 2024 Manufactured in Thailand.

PHEVs are a gateway to full EV ownership and bigger battery variants can be driven as EVs for all but road trips.

In Europe there is currently a boom in EV sales of Chinese cars

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-07-29/china-electric-car-brands-mg-byd-grab-record-europe-market-share

EV sales in Thailand for Jan-June 2024 were ahead of the same period last year, the same can’t be said of Pickups sales.

January 2024 registrations figures are a result of EV 3.0 subsidy ended 31st December 2023

as the DLT point out in this article

Data from the Department of Land Transport indicate that the EV market has not been particularly strong since the beginning of the year. January recorded the highest number of registrations for the year at 13,321 units, driven partly by a rush to register before the January 31 deadline to qualify for benefits under the EV promotion plan, EV 3.0, which offers a 2% excise tax and a subsidy of up to 150,000 baht.

This rush led to a sharp decline in registrations the following months.

If the cumulative total for the first five months is extrapolated for the entire year, EV sales are expected to be close to 76,000 units, considerably lower than the overall projection of between 100,000 to 130,000 units.

We are about a week away from the release of July's registration numbers, but best to start the anti-gloating treatment early, as it should be pretty easy for EVs to beat 💓 the 10.8% market share fraction from 2023.

    business-commerce-gloat-gloats-boss-manager-management-CS590110_low.jpg

Problem is Autolife numbers don't tally with DLT numbers

Autolife EV numbers for July 2023 are 5116

DLT numbers for July 2023 for

R.Y.1 Private passenger car with no more than 7 people are 5057

    difference of 59

    https://autolifethailand.tv/ev-bev-register-thailand-july-2023/

so their market share % is meaningless

    * BYD Seal / GWM ORA 07 / Deepal L07 are 100% electric vehicles.

    dsegment_jun_2024-facebook.jpg

Not Sure how they get their numbers according to DLT stats for June registrations

Vehicle type: R.Y. 1, personal passenger car, not more than 7 people.

    1) Honda Accord 260

    2) Byd Seal  249

    3) Toyota Camry 155

    4) Ora 07 104

    5) Deepal L07 62

In addition to the above for Vehicle type: R.Y. 10 Sightseeing service car

    Deepal L07 3 vehicles

    Toyota Camry 2 vehicles

So Deepal L07 is correct if you add R.Y.1 and R.Y.10 together

    ORA 07 is correct

    BYD Seal is correct

Honda Accord is missing 138 vehicles

Toyota Camry has  62 vehicles more that combined  R.Y.1 and R.Y.10 together

Fiber, plastic, polymer,  PVC, HDPE, etc....what the cover's exact composition is I can't say....it's some type of material that is not metal.   Rats/mice will pretty much chew on anything that is not metal.

Here is a site that has pictures of the battery covers

Majority of brands use steel with the exception of byd using plastic and Ora good cat using carbon fiber which I understand is expensive

I can now confirm it's "not" for the Seal.

Just a few minutes ago another BYD dealership near me called me regarding making an appointment for Rat Guard installation on my Atto....I had messaged them on LINE yesterday.   He was calling to offer me an appointment for Rat Guard installtion.     I told him I had just a few hours earlier made an appointment at another BYD dealership.  I thanked him for calling as he was ready to provide an appointment date...it was going to be one day later than the appointment I made at the other dealership.

I then asked him a few questions about Rat Guard.  It's a free installation for the Dolphin & Atto only to predominately add protection for the upper "fiber" cover of the traction battery....basically sparying on that chemical and adding some alumimum corner protectors on the fiber cover.  The rep said Rat Guard does not apply to the Seal since the Seal has an aluminum upper cover vs fiber cover like the Atto/Dolphin.

When you say fiber there are other brands that have fiber covers and they aren't eaten by rats

all the facebook groups refer to the atto3 and Dolphin as having plastic covers and that Byd is the only brand that has decided to use plastic

cover in this video looks like plastic to me

  9. Mercedes-Benz slows battery plans amid lower EV demand

But with EV demand lower than many automakers had forecast, Mercedes-Benz said earlier this year it did not expect sales of electrified vehicles, including hybrids, to reach up to 50% of the total until 2030 - five years later than its previous forecast of 2025.

And I would urge Japan to prioritise BEV's for sustainability and to fulfill customer demand.

I would caution Japan that customers want BEV's not ICE in any form and they are over-relying on legacy solutions with ridiculous numbers of moving parts and gross inefficiencies.  Thailand has already advanced past being a hub for ancient technology and has embraced the future and it's clear from increasing market share they made the correct decision.

I would further advise those in Japan to stop spreading disinformation regarding impractical new ICE engines, or mythical solid-state batteries, and other nonsensical information designed to do nothing more than slow BEV adoption by spreading fear or promising milk & honey in the future that clearly is a step back from the clear technological advantage and customer satisfaction of BEV's.

In summary "Don't fight the customer".

It  would appear that the Thai Goverment has been listening closely to some wise words from the expat community of Don't put all your eggs in one basket

EV Board supports 'hybrid cars', approves 5-year excise tax cut, attracts additional investment of 50 billion

'EV Board' issues measures to support hybrid cars, reducing excise tax for HEV cars from 2028 - 2032, expecting this measure to create no less than 50 billion baht in investment, creating a modern car parts production base, 'Excise' expects to lose 5,000 - 10,000 million baht in revenue, but pushing Thailand to be a future HEV production base

Even your own irrelevant statistics show a burgeoning EV market share.

I think you have a problem with personal trucks, I don't think there is a single EV offering.

No Issue with R,Y,3 Personal trucks Total of 182 registered this year including 57 from BYD

Type 3: Personal trucks (R.Y.3) are vehicles that are not used for personal transport in accordance with the law on land transport. They must be no wider than 2.50 meters, no longer than 12 meters, and the length of the body measured from the center of the rear axle to the rear of the vehicle must not be more than 3/5 of the length measured from the center of the front axle to the center of the rear axle, such as a pickup bed, a cargo van, a pickup bed with a roof, etc.

Mr Toyota is still sending the stuffed envelopes.   Take a look at the 29 July 2024 Bangkok Post article titled: "Hybrids still greener, Japan seminar told"

The article states/implies Japan believes "hybrids" are the way to go; not BEV especially in places like SE Asia....even specifically talks Thailand.

    What they stated is correct

Japan urges ASEAN to prioritise hybrids over EVs for sustainability

During the Economic Security and Supply Chains seminar, Yasuyuki Todo from the Faculty of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University cautioned ASEAN about over-relying on the electric vehicle (EV) industry. He pointed out that since Asean mainly depends on fossil fuels for energy production, EVs still indirectly consume non-renewable resources.

Todo suggested that ASEAN countries, including Thailand, should prioritise hybrid cars over EVs as a more practical solution for reducing carbon emissions. He remarked that Thailand is ready to advance beyond being a hub for car manufacturers and should instead focus on research and development.

    opposing anecdote.

They appear to be selling.  We have three on the road in our small city outside of Korat.  Two work trucks and one daily driver.

You won't see them in Bangkok of course, for obvious reasons.  They're too small, too slow, too unflashy, don't have gold hubcaps and cost less than three million baht.

According to the DLT registrations site 206 Hilux Champ registered between January 1st to 30th June

191 were registered in February don't know if there was a special promotion for January other months numbers are 7 or lower per month

  14. If we look at the combined DLT vehicle categories where EV have been registered this year excluding motorcycles and tractors

R.Y. 1 Private passenger car with no more than 7 people
R.Y. 2 Private passenger cars with more than 7 people
    R.Y. 3 Personal trucks
    R.Y. 4 personal three-wheeled vehicle
R.Y. 6 Vehicles for hire carrying no more than 7 passengers.
    R.Y. 8 Three-wheeled rental car
    R.Y. 9 Business service vehicles
    R.Y. 10 Sightseeing service car

    R.Y. 11 Car rental service

Total registrations for February 2024 are 57,765 including 3,670  EV's giving EV's market share of 6.36%

Total registrations for March     2024 are 56,761 including  5,003 EV's giving EV's market share of 8.82%

Total registrations for April        2024 are 47,231 including  4,114  EV's giving EV's market share of 8.71%

Total registrations for May        2024 are 53,598 including  5,483 EV's giving EV's market share of 10.23%

Total registrations for June       2024 are 53,348 including  5,807 EV's giving EV's market share of 10.9%

Ignoring vehicle categories such as R.Y 6 would imply that there isn't a single EV taxi vehicle in Thailand

R.Y. 8 Three-wheeled rental car since 2022 has been  all electric with the exception of 2 LPG registered in 2022

    I don't agree with you.

I used the one where all the EV's are sold and compared it to the total sales in that category.

    I didn't include road rollers, mini-buses, tractors, tuk-tuks etc

The stats show a trend of growing demand for EV's and reducing demand for ICE.

Honda's sales have declined over 30% in the last couple of years, they have closed 5 factories including Thailand.  They see the problem at the sharp end.

No you not using where all EV's are sold

Here is a list of the 17 DLT vehicle categories and the number of EV's registered this year

the number at the end is the number of vehicles for each category.

R.Y. 1 Private passenger car with no more than 7 people 36,497
R.Y. 2 Private passenger cars with more than 7 people 1
    R.Y. 3 Personal trucks 182
    R.Y. 4 personal three-wheeled vehicle 14
R.Y. 6 Vehicles for hire carrying no more than 7 passengers. 918
    R.Y. 8 Three-wheeled rental car 63
    R.Y. 9 Business service vehicles 6
    R.Y. 10 Sightseeing service car 51
    R.Y. 11 Car rental service

    R.Y. 12 Motorcycle 13609
    R.Y. 13 Tractor 8
    R.Y. 14 road roller
R Y. 15 Vehicles used in agricultural work
    R.Y. 16 trailer
    R.Y. 17 Public Motorcycles 6

Currently, there are 7 car manufacturers that have applied for investment promotion in Thailand, with plans to invest in hybrid cars: 4 are Japanese, namely Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, and 3 are Chinese, namely Great Wall Motors, MG, and Cherry.

I said the market share of EV's grew 30% in March.

7.4% in February to 10.6% in March is actually a 40% growth as you were kind enough to point out, I calculated incorrectly at 30%.  My original post is below.

However you slice and dice it

    • February 7.4% of new cars were EV's
    • March 10.6% of new cars were EV's
    • April 10.8% of new cars were EV's
    • May 12.1% of new cars were EV's
    • June 13.4% of new cars were EV's.

    EV market share grew

    • 30% in March
    • 2% in April
    • 11% in May
    • 10% in June

Posting more rubbish maybe your not aware out of the 17 different types of DLT vehicle categories

Cars are listed in 7 of the DLT vehicle categories but you choose to ignore 6 of those  vehicle categories

This website shows pictures of each different type of vehicle for each category
