  1. Out of 3 visits to Vietnam, they only once stamped me in and out on the last page available, the very last page was already used up by other countries.

    I still have 20 + free pages.

but it seems they check all the past visits, as the officer was flipping through my passport looking for the previous stamps.

They are probably trying to detect doctored passports.

Ignore the above post by Russell. totally wrong info...

You can enter laos an get a visa on arrival, $35, (can take the bike if you have a note from the rental company giving you permission),  if entering Burma at Mae Sai you can get a day pass for $10, (cant take the bike) otherwise ur need a visa ( get it online) if ur planning on staying the night.( $50)

You can NOT enter Burma from Laos

No idea what extension ur talking about, but ur going to need 2 re entry permits and you can ONLY get 1 at a time, so better getting a multiple re entry for 3,800

    enjoy

For USD 10 you can actually stay up to 14 days.

not sure what you mean with $50 for staying overnight.

The $ 10 fee is also good for an overnight stay, I have done it.

You just need to tell them when you want to go back, so that they can arrange accordingly

  3. I would say there is a high possibility  that they deny you a visa OR

don't let you in despite you holding a visa.

You can read these stories here on Thaivisa.

so I feel the border runs suggested here by others are the safer alternative.

In a previous incarnation I have done a few to spend winter time here , fully exploiting the two per calendar year "rule " .

Just choose the right border crossing.

so for you it's border run, extension at immigration, border run

If you your visa exempt entry is due to a bilateral agreement no extension is allowed. And there is no limit at land borders crossings.

About the no limit, do you mean I can do more than the usual two crossings per calendar year ?  where do you gather that info from, please ?

I did not see any such info in the document you provided.

    Thanks

  5. I am not fluent in no Thai

But I have specifically learnt a few phrases to cope with unexpected encounters at border crossings.

So far it has always worked to my advantage.

always got admitted after a very brief conversation with their superior.

I am convinced that when Asians can speak basic Thai it makes Thai people think we are culturally close and thus they are more lenient on me.

in some nations you can get away even for DUI if you know which phrases  to say and repeat it often enough to the police officer.

I would advise not to do this, it blows their mind that you can hold 2 valid passports from the same country.

Also within Thailand i suggest not to let them know you have 2 passports.

I wanted to come into Thailand on passport #1 ( with valid non 'O' ) then exit with same passport but enter Laos on passport #2 to get a new non 'O' put on that passport, i was informed it's not possible to 'switch' passports in no mans land crossing the border so came in on a Visa Expemt on passport #2 then crossed to Laos.

This thread was about dual nationality passport swap

He is writing about getting a OA long stay visa (NON-OA) at a embassy or official consulate in your home country.

You have to show the financial proof when you apply for it there and show the money in a bank there.

    See: http://www.mfa.go.th/main/en/services/4908/15385-Non-Immigrant-Visa-"O-A"-(Long-Stay).html

    Thanks for the hyperlink

it says I can get the Non Immigrant OA visa done in my home country or in Bangkok.

I remember if I apply for Extension of Stay within the country then there is no need for medical certificate and police report.

So I assume the same applies to Non Immigrant OA application

    when done in BAngkok.

So i could do it in BAngkok, show them my bank statements with the assets abroad, and the only significant difference to extension of stay ( aka as retirement visa ) is that  I must leave the country from time to time .

    Is my understanding correct ?

Yep,went from CM to Maesai today .

Had to show my passport twice when buying bus tickets .

Three photo recognition photos taken at the border .

14 fingers on the finger-printer scanner ........and my buses got stopped and searched four times .

    WHat bus ? Probably Greenbus.

I think it's better to take one of the mini vans from CHiang Rai to MaeSai that leave from the bus station, they go by the name Diamond, I believe. 50 baht

fewer passengers to check, mostly local Thai, usually no Burmese passengers who are under extrascrutiny, and the van goes faster.

man with a van usually takes an hour

    To the other poster

you either have to pay 500 baht or 10 dollars, they have US dollar change,

so you can come up with a hundred

lastly, the border closes at 9pm now.

  9. So my understanding is that I can get a non-O visa good for one year, aka retirement visa if I fulfill the following conditions, apart from the obvious age req.

    1. Still have 15 days left on my visa or visa exempt stay

    2. Have 800k in a bank account here two months prior to my application

and proof that the money has been wired from abroad

    is that all ?

is it true that I don't need any police or medical clearance if I apply from within Thailand ?

And when will the requirement for mandatory health insurance kick in ?

    Thanks

I did go there to get a visa exempt entry recently and I told the Burmese side that I would stay for the night and he asked me whether I had a hotel booking , I said that I didnt and that I would just walk around and find a place .

LOL , he told me that without a hotel booking , he wouldnt let me in , so he stamped me in and out and sent me back to Thailand .

I thanked him for allowing me a very enjoyable 2 minute stay in Myanmar ????

Did not know a single officer can do this.

usually, you get stamped out on the other side of the road,by other personnel.
