  1. Very easy to find high quality glasses from Nikon, Hoya, Essilor, at least in Bangkok, but I am sure other cities too. Essilor has plants in Thailand.
  2. I know but I want to enjoy small shopping in ubon + I always try to support local businesses or am just lazy
  3. Hi all, This question is for cyclists in Ubon. I need to repair a MTB (câbles) and need to drive 2 hours to Ubon. I went several times to MT Bike in the past years but last time, 2 years ago, had a bad experience with some crazy woman complaining because I did not buy my bicycle in her shop and told me to go elsewhere (the technicians were cool by the way). Would you still recommend this shop ? I need an alternative just in case my wrong karma repeats itself, I found Thanasikanon Cycling in Google Maps, any opinion or any alternative ? Thanks in advance
  4. Confirmation on TV from a friend of his he had extramarital affairs. Actually he said he went to Pattaya many times, but with the help of her daughter and his phone, she realized he went instead in Korat in a house he built for his current 2nd office with his wife's money, which would be the cause of their last fight. The thing about the wife gambling with her money seems secondary to his greed and stupidity.
  5. On TV they also talked about a 2nd office
  6. I highly recommend the reading of the Wikipedia page about Thai airways, particularly the history and the "corporate affairs". It explains a lot and does not suggest a bright future.
  7. Having read most of the replies, I wish you good luck to make an informed decision. Maybe the good one is to go to IO as soon as possible to solve this as requests from IO officers are unpredictable but from my experience it is not a good idea to go there last minute for anything as I suspect officers might feel pressured and they dont like that All the stories about showing two passports to pass customs are to say the least extremely dubious.
  8. I dont really understand the debate as I have never seen in the news any police raid on western people working on Internet or of any of them being banned from staying. Authorities wont ask you where your money comes from. The bad scenario some refer would be the following: you make friends with other farangs, they look cool and know so much about Thailand, you tell them how cool is your life. But as they are not cool they are going to send your name to the tax office and your life wont be so cool. Dont know if these stories I read sometimes are true or urban legend but the psycho expats are real.
  9. Not going to Songkran party does not mean one has to stay at home watch some screen and if Songkran in rural Thailand is still enjoyable, at my age, I don't see the point going to the celebrations in Bangkok, many locals have left, the crowd is not so mixed, no fun for me. And not going to bars at night after 60 does not mean you don't have a good time in life. Actually, indepedently of age, if you have activities and company you enjoy at home or somewhere else, there is no point spending more time than necessary in bars. Just my opinion, the occasional fresh beer at sunset watching life in the streets is sufficient for me, casual conversation is optional.
  10. Search in google map, you should find a specialist of car audio in your neighbourhood as there are many small and a few big shops in bangkok. I agree there is no reason to doubt of the quality of work for most things in Bangkok and even in Thailand compared to elsewhere. The reference in car audio in Bangkok is Rocket Sound
  11. Thanks for all your replies, they seem from real people, some are even funny. Particularly, some (one) pretend this is not a forum just about thailand. Actually, in 4 pages, 120 posts, there is 0 post about football on a saturday. I am not sure I even have seen one (re)post about sports, Tv, food, weather, sex stimulants ... or any other trivial subject like finding decent wine at 499THB in Ubon Ratchathani. I mean I am not 100% surprised by the presence of news reposts about U.S. politics or king Charles, but by their overwhelming quantity today like there is no room for nothing else, or maybe there is nothing else, hence my question
  12. Just to mention that from pages 1 to 4 of new content in this forum, only one post out of 120 is about thailand and still it is a repost of some news about a thai senator I don't really give a flying you know what. This looks like a ghost house...
  13. Been passing there for years and always wonder what is the story behind this 60s-80s design. Seems like it is related to Union Tower condos or hotel, but since when is it there? Is there a relation with ICI advert underneath ?
  14. She toured in Vietnam and Thailand with Bob Hope, a U.S. entertainer who made a Xmas tour for US troops every year. During Vietnam war. Usually stopped at Ubon. She appears in perfect shape at 14m20s here in 1967 https://youtu.be/8uqN5mXWHZM
  15. I spotted this compound cycling in the area in july. Looked big, the park looked maintained and maybe 20 houses identical, which apparently have been inhabited (tv antennas) and abandoned. Looked modern and recent but already naturally decayed. I think the drives along the canals are accessible with motorbike. Not sure about how to get in the compound. Should be interesting to know what happened.
  16. Here is what happened. I had a new passport this year, when I went to the bank yesterday, I asked them to enter the new passport number in my (dedicated, no transactions over the years) account. What I did not know is that they had to make a new bank book. So I had this book with only one line on it. This might be the reason. I had the old book with me at the immigration but the officer was not interested to see it once she had made her requirements.
  17. Thanks for your replies. Yes I should have gone before, my mistake but it was quite easy the previous (>10) years. TM30 was asked at L desk. With rental contract in my wife's name, I am not sure about the outcome. I will try TM30 with her name on it, I read this somewhere else so I hope it works One year statement was required though I use the bank method. Always provided the 100 THB paper from the bank. Maybe I met the wrong officer at the wrong time.
  18. Today CW immigration required a TM30 as well as a one year statement from the bank for my retirement visa, which they never did before Q1 : is it just me ? Q2 : I never did a TM30 before and rental contract is in the name of my wife, can I solve that by providing copy of her id card and thai marriage paper with the TM30 form ? Q3 : I feel that this might lead me past the expiration date of my visa. Does someone have an experience of extending his/her visa after the expiration date, like a few days after, due to extra documents required ? Thanks in advance for the bad news or the good news
  19. I read all the suggestions till the end and they don't seem very helpful. I will try mine : change the set wheel/tire/tube
  20. Actually it has been so cool to renew my retirement visa for years but that it was a shock to be so complicated to transfer this f*** visa but in the end the immigration officers ladies are quite gentle considering the stress you feel when you go there
  21. If you have not been informed about that and actually I did not find it online, when you transfer your visa (retirement and probably marriage) to a new passport, the immigration website telles you to bring only copies of your passports and the certificate from your embassy but actually they want copies of your bank book to check the money is still in your bank account. Also, you are in the same queue as people want to make new visa so expect 2 hours waiting
  22. No offence please ! I am a compulsive sarcastic and actually...I enjoy it. Anyway, I am glad we agree on the main point.
