When I married my wife in the Philippines after the two year wait for a visa we came to the US and all I had to do was start listing her as my wife. I had already gotten a tax ID for her and with her green card she was able to get a Social Security card. From there she went to work and that’s all it took. I never registered the marriage as such. I never used an attorney for any action with the immigrations department. The instructions can be a little confusing if you’re doing it yourself but it is quite possible. If you don’t feel comfortable certainly spend the money. At the very least they will make sure that the forms are correct. I wouldn’t look for her to have a visa in less than a year though and having a lawyer won’t speed it up.
