  1. Probably not handcuffs but there could be grounds for refusing bail as he is a flight risk Not many other defendants have their own 757 aircraft on call
  2. The latest published theory from the last collaboration between Stephen Hawking and Thomas Hertog refines the hologram theory "Their approach uses the string theory concept of holography, which postulates that the universe is a large and complex hologram: physical reality in certain 3-D spaces can be mathematically reduced to 2-D projections on a surface." Hawking and Hertog developed a variation of this concept of holography to project out the time dimension in eternal inflation. This enabled them to describe eternal inflation without having to rely on Einstein' theory. In the new theory, eternal inflation is reduced to a timeless state defined on a spatial surface at the beginning of time. The "eternal inflation theory" therefore updates Hawkings previous theory of "no boundary theory" that the big bang was the start of inflation - the eternal inflation theory would allow for multiverses to be constantly created in a "Darwinian" approach to universe creation which would then solve the issue of why the universe we inhabit is so specifically attuned to supporting life. The problem with string theory is that it is untestable but in the new Hawking theory there should be some primordial gravitational waves remaining - which probably could not be found by the current instrumentation such as LIGO , but could be found by the satellite-based LISA program or future missions. Besides this the theory the "left-field theory "that most interests me is the one (and I apologise I forget the author) where the total mass and energy of the universe is equivalent to the content of a very large black hole - therefore we are living in a universe contained within a black hole which is why there is a constantly expanding universe (drawing in material from outside the universe) and an "event horizon" which is the limit of where we can see to the end of the universe, and the big bang was in fact the collapse into a black hole creating our universe.
  3. Like Al Capone and tax law, it is the stupid things that bring you down. It is not the payment itself that is the problem, it is the cover-up and exposure of other fraud that will be the issue According to some reports around 30 counts of tax fraud and campaign payment violations
  4. It is high time that the "normal" taxis should have GPS installed as mandatory for getting the license. This is why people prefer Grab or Bolt - not just the price. Then they could type in the name of the hotel - most of the taxis drivers will know the major hotels in the centre of Bangkok and around Sukhumvit, but anything slightly out of the way and they may pretend that they know or understand you (to save face) and then hope they can find it in the general area or you will be able to direct them. I always have google maps open on my phone when I am taking any taxi service just to be sure. I have even had the ridiculous situation of getting into a taxi in the middle of Bangkok to go to a meeting in PakKret - having given the taxi driver the address in Thai - and him getting totally lost and eventually asking me to drive as I knew where I needed to go.
  5. My honest take on this is I expect that nobody will win. By this I mean I expect that PT - possibly in conjunction with another party - will have the majority in the parliament but that their candidate will not be accepted by the senate who will vote for Prawit/Prayut - BhumJaiThai will swing whichever ways benefits them financially. This will lead to a stalemate with a PM chosen from the minority who cannot pass any laws in parliament and vetoes any from the opposition. No chance of a compromise candidate - No chance of any negotiation - rising tension and no progress for two years until a new senate has to be sworn in - and at this time there will be another coup.
  6. He did not specifically ask his supporters to use violence as that would open him to a charge of incitement, but he did use language very similar to Jan 6 "Protest - take our country back" The indictment he is facing relates to the payment to Stormy Daniels and campaign finance - which may seem minor but could be a criminal offence, a little like Al Capone being taken down for tax evasion.
  7. For the high-end classic cars such as E-types etc. that are over 50 years old it is definitely an aesthetic and economic sin as they would lose most of their value and desirability - no-one with any sense would convert a 250 GTO for example. More recent and lower-value cars however may be a good investment with a conversion - I have been thinking about a TVR Griffith conversion and somebody just offered me a TR7 in Florida with a good body but crappy engine and transmission - this could make an ideal conversion once I figure out where to put the battery pack.
  8. A decline in living standards is a relative term as it is taking a baseline of already higher living standards - not as many people in the 1950s would have had a refrigerator, washing machine, indoor lavatory, mobile phone, internet etc. The highest tax burden is more correct as there has been a shift from progressive direct taxation (income tax, rates etc.) to less progressive indirect taxation (VAT etc,) and many relative tax benefits (capital gains reductions, corporate tax loopholes, international revenue transfers etc.) which mean that the tax burden on the average salary has increased. A more telling statistic is that in ten years from 2000, the UK average salary has increased by about 17.5%, which is lower than most European countries, and now surpassed by countries such as Ireland and Norway which used to have a lower average. The other meaningful statistic is that in the same ten-year period the average house price increase was 33% which means less affordability
  9. And they will all be stationed at polling booths come election time - or at least in democratic districts Not to intimidate anyone, just to check that everyone is voting legally you understand... Then of course they can put a marker on the door of everyone who voted democrat... Then they can be used to round up the "prurient" transgenders... and then... and then...
  10. You should see a doctor as soon as possible as there are many causes for this I used to suffer from reflux, if eating late in the evening, especially dairy, and so when I had a strong pain in my right chest i thought this was the cause, but it did not go away as usual and became worse. The pain spread under my armpit and then around my back - at which point it was time to get a diagnosis. Turns out it was shingles (chicken pox) - but I had not developed a rash yet - a couple of weeks with steroid cream sorted it out. This may not be the case for you but best to get it checked out. I put this out there because I did not know at the time that you could now get a vaccine for shingles, but I would advise anyone here over 55 to get the vaccine and save themselves a lot of pain
  11. Actually in the UK we quite like it being "shoved in our faces" - these posters are all over the underground. It would be interesting to see what would happen if a group of drag artists in Tennessee decided to put on a traditional British christmas pantomime...
  12. Tennessee introduces law to ban drag shows and British pantomimes Tennessee is to introduce a state law restricting "adult cabaret performances", shows where it lumps together strip joints together with drag shows and British pantomimes under the heading of "any show with female or male impersonators" The law builds on the growing trend of 33 states in the US legislating restrictions on transgender and other LGBT rights Tennessee enacts nation’s first law restricting drag shows, bans gender-affirming care for youth (msn.com)
  13. On the contrary - I am just trying to find out how far this extreme anti-trans phobia will go in practice. It is one thing to throw a red meat soundbite to a crowd by saying "eradicate transgenderism" but quite another when the bigotry is turned into actual action - how do people who support his speech - such as yourself on this forum, suppose it would be put into action Answer that
  14. But then why did this guy "feel the need" to speak out against transgenders Why does he not just "get on with life" as you put it Because he thinks he is a right-wing mouthpiece and demonising certain groups plays into prejudice and gets him noticed
