  1. Honestly, I am pretty slow when it comes to proofreading so I didn't think to charge by the hour. That's something I could reconsider. That being said, what would you recommend per hour for academic article/thesis?
  2. I ended up in the hospital this year thanks to the air pollution in Bangkok. My allergies were so bad it was like I had a perpetual cold/ sinus infection that just grinded me down until the regular over the counter medicines couldn't cut it. After about a week on the meds, I was feeling much better. But I think the end of the burning season had as much to do with my recovery as anything else. Your family has my sympathies
  3. I'm a new lecturer at a university in Bangkok and sometimes get requests for proof reading and private lessons for IELTS and once for English classes for a small international company. I have no idea what is a fair price. Rather than post separate threads for each situation, I'm putting them together in one post. I would really appreciate your suggestions since most of the information I found online is outdated or doesn't fit my situation: 1) how much to charge per word for proof reading a thesis/academic paper for a graduate student/ teacher? One time I charged .6 baht per word (1200 baht for 2000 word article) and not sure if I'm under selling myself because it was very time consuming to edit the grammar for almost EVERY sentence. BTW I have a background in academia, but I'm not editing for content. Just for grammar, readability, formatting, etc. 2) how much to charge per hour for teaching business English classes for an international company? I imagine 2 to 3 hours per week. I would supply whatever materials needed. A Japanese/Thai business approached me to teach English classes, but I'm not sure what to ask for. Thanks again for your suggestions. Cheers!
  4. I'm currently teaching at a public university and looking for ways to supplement my modest (pathetic) salary. I teach English privately and occasionally edit manuscripts for grad students, but it's not really getting the job done. Could you tell me more about what you mean teaching online? Is that English or a content area like consulting? I would greatly appreciate your advice
  5. Right, I got a visa exemption when I came back in, not waiting for a tourist visa. I was concerned that they wouldn't let me in considering the recent crackdowns on long term stayers and border runners. So I had everything ready, even 20k baht in cash just in case they asked for proof of funds. My school administrator is new I guess and not helpful with the police clearance unfortunately. She bugged me about the unimportant things and didn't know about necessary things. Thanks for the recommendation for the teacher forum. I'll check it out. Cheers!
  6. Update: Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I tried to get the non- b without the police clearance, but the Thai consulate wouldn't accept my application without it. To follow up with your comment on how the school needs to request it, my school is telling me it's my "personal document" and they don't handle getting the police clearance. They just tell me to look at the embassy's website for requirements, which is not at all useful. The school administrator who is handling this is at a conference so she's not able to offer any more help. This is.... astounding
  7. I'm nearly heading to the airport to do a visa run to get a non-immigrant B visa to work as a teacher for a school here in Bangkok. I just noticed that a police clearance certificate is required for the visa according to the Thai consulate in Laos. I'm confused because I thought the police clearance was needed when I apply for the work permit later on, not the visa. Anyone know what the rules are for a new teacher? This is blowing my mind because my school didn't include the police check in the list of documents that I needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Note: I'm currently living in Bangkok Cheers!!
  8. Would that extension be based on my current Ed visa or is that a separate thing? And thank you for explaining the process!
  9. I'm currently on an Ed visa, did one extension so far for a total of about 6 months on this visa. I found a job in Thailand and my new employer wants me to cancel my current visa before I leave Thailand to apply for my Work Visa. When I go to immigration to cancel my Ed visa, do I get just 24 hours to leave the country or do they give me a 7 day grace period before I need to leave the country? The reason why I ask is because of the timing of paperwork I need about a week between when I cancel my Ed visa and when I leave Thailand. If there is no grace period when I cancel, any other suggestions to stay in the country for a week? Cheers in advance ????
  10. FYI - your school is going to need at least three weeks to process your new Ed visa. The school I went to wouldn't accept my application unless I had that much time still left on my current visa. If you're going to the typical language school, you will need to renew/get an extension every 3 months. It's not convenient at all. There is paperwork involved. When I got my extension, I had to pay a fee to the school's visa agent (maybe 7000 baht?) to handle everything. I don't know what other schools do for an extension. This was just my experience.
  11. This is really cool. Did you do this project for fun or because you hoped to have lower utility costs?
  12. If I knew the guy drinking and he was a friend, I'd be concerned. Starting the day with a drink isn't the healthiest thing. But if he's a stranger, it's none of my business. I wish him well
  13. Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I think I'll give them my permanent address back in America. You've been a big help
  14. Hello everyone, I just got hired by a Singaporean company for a remote job. They've got a third party company doing a background check on me and they want my current address. I'm more or less living in Thailand now, staying here on a tourist visa. Should I use my current address in Thailand or use my permanent address back in America? My concern is that since I can't legally work in Thailand that this will disqualify me for the job. Then again, I don't want to lie on the background check. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!
