Yep, they also re-use the oil a lot. It breaks down when you re-use it and becomes much unhealthier. The heat causes cancel related radicals to develop as the oil breaks down. I had some pad thai in CM once when they just opened the restaurant (saw them use new oil) and it tasted completely different then the stuff I got after they kept re-using the old oil throughout the day.

Last year is when I moved. It was terrible, almost like being in a forest fire. You don't notice it unless you have some sort of view from your condo to see what kind of cloud you are actually in. Just walking down the street you don't notice it much visually. It's only for a couple months, but it's constant breathing it 24/7.

Breathe it and die. I tried wearing a mask a few times, but a real filter mask is too hot to wear walking around. The other option is sitting in your condo with one of those portable air filters (they don't work to well really) and just going out occassionally for food, etc. I work on the computer a lot so I'm mostly indoors.

What's worse, lowlife people or the smoke? 🤣 The last time I moved out of CM was during that smokey season. I had a view and could not even see some of the buildings nearby.

I did not feel there were many long term expats around in CM and I lived in the old city for many years. It's mostly tourists and younger people passing through. The people in my condo building never talked to each other. Recently, a lot of Chinese visitors you would never talk to. I never went to any organized expat meetups though which I think they still have. Come to think of it, I had no social life there at all except for the Thai women I dated. There are some digital nomad social circles in CM that can be good to talk to. They tend to be much younger though, so if you are in your 50's you may not fit in well with that scene. It would help if you were actually "doing something" and not just "abiding", since it revolves around work and interesting ideas, not drinking and whoring and doing the old guy thing. I felt too old when talking to them, but age is just a number, right? Nope, I'm the old guy. A lot of them live together, like at the Hilltop 4. They have a hot/cold plunge pool, computer lab setup, etc.

The quote makes sense here. It's a way of saying that not asking could create more hassle then just asking to begin with. I agree with that. It's not likely a thai hotel would oversee some missing dishes (or anything for that matter, everyone being watched like a hawk...). The potential for a problem by not asking was greater then just asking to begin with.

That's what I ultimately concluded. The use of the items was not worth the hassle of being questioned or causing a problem. So I just returned it. I don't like dealing with thai's much though or language barriers.

Just the language hassle mostly. Would probably need to spend a lot of time explaining, waiting for them to ask a supervisor, deciding if there was an additional charge or not, etc. Facing the mentality of a foreigner maybe getting something for nothing. That's even if they spoke english. It seems easier to borrow it and skip the hassle. If it were in the Usa I would just ask because it would not be a big deal. Or, just have it not be a big issue if I borrowed it and was confronted later.

You're assuming theft and jumping to an all or nothing extreme reaction. Read the Op again. He is using additional stuff in his room he felt he needed, not taking stuff off the property. Stuff was to be left when he vacates.

Using it in the room as theft? To me that's a stretch... That's more about someone being anal over a technicality. If there is a problem with it I would say you're in the wrong business in hospitality.

It is also a perogative of a space that has money and a longer term mindset. 'The customer is always right' implies that the establishment can afford to take a small loss to satisfy a customer and gain goodwill and future business, good word of mouth, reviews, etc. Whereas inflexibility implies that the establishment is more concerned with holding onto what they have due to a scarcity mindset. It that towel or shampoo really worth the criminal complaint and bad publicity? Or, is it a problem with low paid staff and really a reflection of the hotel not doing well? Especially if we are talking about just using something in the room. That's not even taking it off the property...

That flexibility and "the customer is always right" attitude was missing.

That's what I was looking for. Whether there was some sort of undue stigma attached to it irrespective to what was taken. Like it being a towel or something and getting an extreme response. Like what happened with Otto W. who stole that propaganda poster in North Korea.
