  1. I just upgraded my gaming rig with a Core i5-2500K and a Asus P8Z68-V motherboard and as I chose the Coolermaster V6GT CPU cooler I had to get a new case too because mine wasn't wide enough to fit this cooler in so I got a Coolermaster 690 II Advanced. The new motherboard has 4 USB ports, 2 on the back I/O panel and 2 on the board for connection to a front panel header. Coolermaster do sell these but it seems not in Chiang Mai.

Has anybody seen anything like this in Jedicool or TKCom or anywhere in BKK?

    cheers

I had been tracking a Gigabyte P2532 gaming notebook. Still not available in the UK but I saw one in JIB last Sunday, cheaper than the European price (Germany), comes with Windows 7. I find these days because of the depreciated value of the Pound that many components are cheaper in Thailand, not all just depends. Sure there is more range in the UK but many things arrive eventually in Thailand. I bought my Gigabyte GTX460 desktop card significantly cheaper than the UK.

  3. I was thinking of getting the Acer 522, here is great thread about what it can actually do. Best get the more expensive AOD522-C58 version which comes with a 500GB HD, 2GB RAM and Windows 7. I've also been looking at the Asus 1015B, another great netbook, matte screen, also uses the same AMD C-50 chipset, 1350 Bt for a copy of Windows 7 Starter. Doesn't have the 1280x768 screen just the normal 1024x600. Shame they are not selling the USB 3.0 version in Thailand yet.

  4. I got a Belkin adapter from ITCity a few years ago, it uses the WIDCOMM stack. Now I see they have this one, not as cheap as Amazon of course and I found this on Speed Computers website, their shop is at the back of Panthip, 3rd floor I think.

  5. Hi

Has anyone seen a TPLink TD-W8960N lately? I'm in Chiang Mai and have been everywhere but it seems it has been replaced by the TD-W8961ND which does not support VPN tunnels. I can pick one up in the UK for 40 GBP next month when I'm there but I've always liked the fact that TPLink in Thailand has a lifetime warranty, at least they do in Chiang Mai.

  6. I recently used one of these TPLink access points in repeater mode to extend a friend's wireless network in a guest house because some rooms were unable to receive the signal from the primary router, also TPLink. There is a small amount of setup to do which is basically selecting the wireless network you want to extend and entering the wireless security details. Because the traffic has to go through two boxes the speed if halved but if you're only using it for internet access then depending on your connection speed of course it will quite likely be fast enough.

Good article about bridging and repeating.

  7. There's a great electronic shop called Kiti Electronic at 193/31 Chang Puek, tel 053-221463, it's on the corner of a road that leads to Tannin market. I bought a mini toroidal transformer there to build a new power supply for my Audio Alchemy Dac-in-a-Box that died during a mini flood in my condo. It's the only place I found that had a decent selection of toroids. I tried at Amorn and then the row of elecronic shops on Ratchawong road (Kasem shop near Warawot)and was put on to this place by the guys at Trigger sound, the shop on the corner opposite the Esso petrol station that sell/rents amps and PA speakers.

  8. Well I tried at Homepro (Hang Dong) and Powerbuy (Robinson) both had the Bionaire for 24,00Bt. Neither Niyom Panich (road from corner of moat to airport plaza) or Siam TV (south side of moat) had any. The name in Thai is Krueang lot kwam cheun (machine lower humidity). Novita in Singapore will ship me the ND 290i for 15,000Bt but are out of stock until end of the month. I already have a Sharp Plamacluster air filter which claims to kill airborne mould spores and virues. It's the same thing they have on the immigration desk at Suvarnbhumi to kill H1N1 etc but bigger.

I guess I'll wait and see for now.

  9. The Novita one I have in India is about the size of a carry on baggage case. As monsoon was only just starting in the place where I stay there (Dharamsala) I was only having to empty the 3.5 litre tank once a day in a 25sqm room. As most people know a humid environment makes it feel hotter and I could really feel the difference being in a dry room rather than in the humid air outside, a feeling with some similarity to that experienced after being in an air conditioned room for a while and then going outside. Of course the difference is less in magnitude but still very noticeable.

I will try HomePro and the rest tomorrow. I had thought I'd seen a Bionnaire model in Powerbuy (kad) once so I will try there too.

    Thanks for the replies.

  10. I just came back to Thailand with my LG Optimus 2X that I bought in the UK. As the phone needs access to the internet for background syncing tasks, I'm wondering which package would be best. I used to just buy 20 hrs a month which was enough for me because normally I'm not that far away from somewhere with WiFi. My question is will a lose a minute, the billing unit, every time my phone sends and receives a few packets of data to keep it in sync and up to date.

    Happy Internet Packages

  11. I just came back to my Condo in Chiang Mai to find some things with a covering of mould. I just bought a Novita ND290i dehumidifier for my place in India and would like to buy something similar here. The Novita website says that they are available in Thailand but I have no idea where.

Anybody seen something like this here or anywhere in Thailand?

    cheers

  12. Hi

I spent the day in Hong Kong yesterday looking for the equivalent of Pantip or Fortune but didn't really find anything to match. I'm looking for a top of the line gaming laptop, something like a Gigabyte P2532N. I found Apliu St in Sham Shui Po which is good for electronic parts and mobiles but nothing with the range of laptops, phones, tabs, media streamers and peripherals that I've seen in Bangkok.

I have found an Acer Iconia A500 tablet for 4000HKD (310GBP) which a significant discount to the UK price of 450GBP, this was in Fortress which is a high street chain.

I also found an LG Optimus 2X for 350 GBP rather than the 400 GBP I just paid for it in Carephone Warehouse in the UK a few weeks ago so it seems some prices are quite competitive so I really would like to see if the same is true for high end laptops.

I've only got a day and half left before flying to Delhi which I know has it's own Pantip equivalent called Nehru place but prices are usually higher there and then I'll be back in Bangkok next month

Anybody spent time here and know where to go?

    cheers

  13. I just joined Metrobank this past Monday at the Tottenham Court Road branch in central London. Today I purchased an air ticket using the Mastercard debit card on Thai Airways website and received an effective rate of 49.03 (checked the UK amount on my online banking), the rate showing on XE is 49.17. I have read of some problems using the card abroad but at least the rate looks good. :-)

  14. Good health is a load of rubbish, just a complete money making scam.

Most of their products are extremely harmful.

Could you elaborate? I was there today and they sell many products that are also available elsewhere in CM including the other places I mentioned as well as Tops and Rimping.

  15. Aden shop on Nimanhamin, just after Soi 12 heading south on the right hand side.

Baan Suan Pak, in a area just of off Wichayanon Road leading from the north east corner of the moat towards Amercian consulate, just past President Hotel /Fabrique night club on the right hand side. You will see Vegetarian Thai Orchid restaurant at the entrance to the area.

Good Health, just up from Suriwong book centre on Sridonchai heading west on the left.

Santi Asoke - Chiang Mai Vegetarain Society just after Niyom Panich electrical shop heading north from Airport Plaza on Mahidol Road. This is usually the cheapest for most things.

I know these aren't great directions but I don't know how well you know Chiang Mai.

  16. I'm on 3BB Indy 6Mbps although since having my node switched to 3BB's own line I've been syncing at 7Mbps and streaming more reliably than before. I'm using a TPLink W8910G which lets me change just about every setting possible so I've just set it to connect only using G.DMT and will monitor how it goes. My sync speed just dropped a 30bits or so but my modem is still telling me my attainable rate is 12079 Kbps

    Mode: G.DMT

    Type: Interleave

    Line Coding: Trellis On

    Status: No Defect

    Link Power State: L0

    Downstream Upstream

    SNR Margin (dB): 20.1 25.0

    Attenuation (dB): 7.0 0.0

    Output Power (dBm): 7.8 12.3

    Attainable Rate (Kbps): 12079 1462

    Rate (Kbps): 7199 623

K (number of bytes in DMT frame): 209 19

R (number of check bytes in RS code word): 16 12

S (RS code word size in DMT frame): 1 4

    D (interleaver depth): 64 4

    Delay (msec): 16 4

  17. Somebody in BKK is selling the Belkin Play Max Modem Router on TV. It's the only simultaneous dual band router with ADSL modem, there are a few others but not with modem. This is the best of both worlds as you can stream your HD video on 5GHz and leave 2.4GHz for less demanding applications like general surfing.

  18. Thanks for the replies.

Well I got up this morning and many pages were coming up blank so I flushed my dns cache, turned the modem off for 5 minutes, rebooted the PC and voila everything seems to be fine, this using 3BB's own dns servers. Now I just need to sort out my security certificate problem.

    cheers
