The place you heard about at Victory Monument is Saxophone, which has a mixed diet of various flavours of jazz, and some blues and R&B. It can be a bit iffy; I wasn't very impressed with the group I saw there last night.

When you say you were there 'last night', I am curious - was that Tue. or Wed.? Although not Blues, Wed. and Thur. features 'Big Band Jazz'; a 10 piece band with a good singer which I quite enjoy.

  2. I'm afraid this situation is just normal , if you look at the continuous

Daily postings from people who are so fed up with the poor quality

of the internet service , we have to remember here in Thailand

what you pay for and have been promised means absolutely nothing

Customer service is as bad as it could get , guarantees and assurances are

Just words to fob you off, pay your money and then they couldn't care less

if this wasn't Thailand, I'd say unbelievable.

Your general comments about Internet performance here are perhaps valid, but this problem relating to Yahoo has noting to do with this issue. Yahoo replys with an error stating their intent to defer acceptance and delivery of the message - which lasts hours, if not days.

  3. As usual the internet in Thailand is a pain in the a**e but of late Yahoo email has been getting increasingly worse - messages lost, bounced back to sender, taking 3 days to arrive. Any recommendations for a more relliable email provider ?

Our firm's e-mail server is experiencing these same delays with messages directed to Yahoo (delays of hours and days). We have been unsuccessful in getting the attention of Yahoo Tech support to date. Our Server's log files reflect an error return from Yahoo indicating that delivery is 'deferred'.

    I would recommend GMAIL (Google).

  4. Hi, we are staying in BKK on our last night in Thailand (end of April) and we have been recommened to vist the Tawandang brew house aka Beer German on Rama 3rd road. Does anyone know of a good hotel nearby.

    Many thanks. M

I think that you are setting yourself up for disappointed if your objective in going there is to drink reasonably good German-style beer, Brewpubs in Thailand just aren't up to snuff. You'd do better going someplace like Bulley's that has two different Paulaners & a couple of British/Irish ales on tap plus a number of other imports in bottles.

Entertainment is good however (for certain age groups).

  5. Two years ago I was traveling to Kenya and it was recommended that I take malaria pills (I live in Bangkok). I visited two major hospitals in Bangkok and neither offered them - advice was that the side effects are not worth the risk. I could not find them at a pharmacy either. Repellent with DEET was the recommended alternative.

  6. Before you decide on anything, you might want to run some tests at Bug & Bee Cafe on Silom (near BTS); They have a high-speed TRUE connection (Free Wi-Fi and a few PC's provided). They are open 24 hours.

The 2-3 rack comment probably refers to equipment racks available for customer provided servers (??) I suspect this is not your situation.

  7. hi im looking to go out for a really nice steak dinner and i mean a proper steak not a thai style steak, somewhere between bangkok and pattaya. Has anybody eaten at any of the steak houses here? were they any good or value for money or if anybody has any other restaurant recommendations it would be much appreciated.

    thanks

New York Steak House at Marriott (Bangkok - Sukumvit) or Manhattan Steak House (Pattaya)

  8. I would be careful about transferring funds from an offshore HSBC (USA Direct) account to Thailand HSBC... They may use the offshore rate... I used my USA HSBC Direct ATM card at the Bangkok HSBC Bank ATM and received the offshore exchange rate when funds were taken out of my US account.

You are right - I had exactly the same experience; however, if you use the same card at a Thai bank you get the onshore rate.

  9. I have a personal checking acount with Bank of America, and I have been transferring money to my Bangkok Bank account monthly via the internet for more than a year now. Cost is $3 to transfer up to $10,000 and it takes 3 business days to complete the transfer.

Are you doing this by using the Bangkok Branch NY routing number and your Thailand bank account number?

I don't know which branch of BB routing number the BoA uses. I didn't provide the routing number, it was already in the BoA link when I set this up.

This sounds like an ACH transfer to Bangkok Bank NY which then forwards it to Thailand. It was discussed just about 2 years ago here:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...c=41816&hl=

Some people said some larger dollar transfers were stopped and some couldn't set this up at all. But for others it worked just fine like your situation.

I get the higher on-shore rate, wouldn't that mean that the transfer was in dollars to Thailand and coverted here?

I always get the onshore rate when I transfer dollars. Today the onshore rate is 34.27 and the offshore is 31.85. It's quite a big difference.

Thank you for all the responses. I have read through the posts on Bank of America, some reports that online transfer options is not available to them depends on which state the account is opened, any truth to that? Anyone has HSBC in US (HSBC direct) that able to do wire transfer online? I got a HSBC from Singapore and it has the worldwide wire transfer option.

    Thanks.

I have an HSBC Direct account in the USA and an HSBC Account in Bangkok; attempted to set initiate a transfer to BKK about 6 months ago and was informed that International transfers were not supported at that time. Anyone with further information?

  10. I have just received my receipt from Mae Hong Son, my next 90 days comes up on 20th December but I will be out of the country. Should I send it in early or just forget about it until I get back in January, is the reset automatic with the re-entry permit?

    Cloudhopper, where is Ban Pong?

    Colin in Viengtai.

If you leave the country before the next reporting date, you have nothing to worry about. The 90 day clock starts over when you return.

  11. the bookstore near tomy romas is devoid of customers. i walk past there every time . go to mbk and look at bookstore next to sizzler, all thais.

Bad Example - That is a Sci-Ed store which has predominantly Thai Materials. Try Kinokunya or Asia books for a better example (Paragon, Discovery, Empoium, etc.). Good mix of Thai and Foreigners.
