In the case that the number of 18,000 foreign (farang) expats is correct. Then it's quite implausible that 7500 of them are Americans. By far the largest group of farang expats here are British nationals.

@magpie
"Strange how far discussions of 20 bhat can go!"
Because this time we are talking about real money, and not about free water, which nobody drinks anyway.
To get back to the topic. The food was good, and the dish very generous. Enough to serve 2 people. I probably would not have minded to pay the charged amount, if I only had known it in advance.
I don't blame the staff. It's certainly not their fault. But there is something wrong with the management, which obviously are trying to to ruin this otherwise nice place.

@JxP
what's your Problem?
Do you really think it's ok to give a customer a menu, which says a certain item costs 100.00 and after the customer finished his meal, charge him with 120.00 ?
Come on, get real!!!

Tonight I was with my Thai wife at the restaurant at the Gymkhana Golf Course, which is near the Kawalla barracks.
I had "Fried Beef With Oyster Sauce", which was according to the menu 120Bt. But when the bill came, it was 140 Bt. When I asked why and showed them the menu, they said "sorry but the price of beef has gone up recently, that's why we have to charge more".
If I had been there by myself, I certainly wouldn't have paid it, but my wife said, "Mai Pen Arai". So just for my peace of mind, I paid it.
Is this another case of "TIT" (This is Thailand) or another attempt to rip off farangs, who don't know any better?

Where to go after dark now, without being the only customer? That's the question nowadays. As far as I see it, there are only 3 farang orientated places left, where you can be sure to meet other farangs:
1. The Red Lion (near Night Bazaar)
2. John's Place (Moon Muang)
3. No 1 Bar (Loy Kroh)
The whole situation in Chiang Mai is getting more and more depresseing.

Are there any Roman Catholic communities in Chiang Mai?

Thai Airways announced friday that starting next week they are cutting their flights to Germany from 21 a week to 14 a week. This will be valid for the rest of the winter time table.
They probably have a good reason to do so.

As far as I know the German consul also is issuing the certificate of residency to non german citiziens.
It's costing 1000 Bath.

"getting travel insurance will certianly be an issue"
I don't think so. In all my life I never had a travel insurance. It's just a waste of money.

Finally the new international terminal makes sense.

What is this all about?
Is this forum now getting involved into Thai politics ?
I don't hope so.

@angelal
I would get in touch with the agency or Korean Airlines as soon as possible. This time of the year is a very busy one, and all flights from Thailand to Korea might be full already.
Most likely KE have rebooked you already. But sometimes sh_t happens.
-
In my opinion there are only 2 possibities.
CNX - BKK with TG and then on to ICN with KE
or
CNX - TPE with CI and then on to ICN with KE
I think the first option is the most likely.
Of course Korean Airlines (KE) has to change your ticket free of charge. You are having a binding transportation contract from CNX to ICN. I would get in touch with travel agency, which sold the ticket.

According to web site of Korean Air, there are no flights from CNX to Seoul !
I'd rather believe Korean Air then Orbitz, when it comes to flights with Korean Air.
-
I don't remember the exact date, but I think they stopped flying to Seoul in september. Check their web site: http://www.koreanair.com/
or even better call them.

@sillybilly
"who would have to pay my airfare and perhaps acccomadation "
Let me guess. Maybe Sillybilly?
Of course you can try to get compensation from the PAD. Good luck.

These are all international flights from Chiang Mai:
CNX - KMG
CNX - LPQ
CNX - KUL
CNX - RGN
CNX - SIN
CNX - TPE
CNX - REP
Korean Airlines ceased their flights to ICN (Seoul, Korea)

Bangkok Airways are flying daily from Phuket to U tapao, which is near Pattaya. From there it takes 2 hours by car to Bangkok.

Does somebody know, when is Thanksgiving Day this year?

". Its written into the lease as returnable ( after 30 days to make sure there are no outstanding bills) and I see no reason why you cannot retrieve it when due."
Obviously there are still people, who believe in fairytales and the tooth fairy. Get real man. This is Thailand. They rip you off, whenever they can.
I dont't know, what you can do with your lease contract. If the back page is empty, you might put some notes on it. Otherwise flash it into the toilet.
To get more serious. What can you do, if the landlord doesn't return the deposit? With your western mind you might consider to get in touch with a lawyer, after all your calls and letters failed to have any result. Then the first thing the lawyer is asking for, is cash in advance. This will even happen quite often. On the long run the lawyer fees plus legal fees will be higher than your deposit. Then after a long time, it can be years, there might be court decision to your favour. But how can can you enforce it?
In Thailand there is no way. Except you send a bully with a baseball bat.
-
"it could be a challenge trying to get your money back."
Certainly it is. In my case I lost the complete deposit. Afterwards I talked to a lot of people and everybody told me, that's the way it is in Thailand. I'd wished they had told me in advance.
In most of the cases the deposit is lost, and there are no legal ways to claim it successfully. The only chance you have is, in case you want to move, don't pay the last 2 rents, don't pay the last utility bill, don't pay the last phone bill etc.
That's the only way to minimize your damage.

"Fatih is now known as Wichai Wittalayai"
Fatih is indeed a strange name for a school. It's the turkish word for conquerer. It is the title given to the Ottaman sultan Mehmed II, who conquered Constantinople in 1453.
I hope that this name doesn't represent the spirit of this school. Otherwise we have to expect a lot of new jihadis (holy warriors) fighting against the infidels.

@segign
About the buffet at the Novotel. Is it a lunch or dinner buffet? Is it offered daily?

I was there and Eddie Baytos and Joe Cummings did a great job. Probalby one the best live acts I've ever seen in Chiang Mai. I didn't like the first gig of Tracy Chapman. I'm sorry that's not her name. I think she's called Cherry Lee. After her was one more band playing, which was quite good.
Where To Go After Dark
in Chiang Mai

I forgot to mention Moon Muang Soi 2 (just behind "Mad Dog"). There also are a couple of bars, which can be quite busy sometimes. The most popular seem to be "The Jai Yen Bar" und "The Halfmoon Pub". Most customers are Brits.
