Bangkok’s Airport Rail Link faces major maintenance
Searat7 replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
I thought the Airport Link was operated by SRT which would explain the maintenance issues. I wonder if CP Group took over recently- would have made sense for BTS to have this responsibility. To the best of my knowledge the fares have not increased at all since the line was opened ( still 45b from Phaya Thai to airport) so this must be a losing proposition which is probably subsidized by the government. -
He must have had a huge infusion of Red Bull (or some drug) before making this appearance which was very uncharacteristic as Americans have noticed a steady decline in his mental and physical condition during the past three years. This was the most partisan State of Union speech I have heard in my lifetime and it was delivered by an angry old man. Very disappointing but not really surprised.

Bangkok administration lacks funding to build three mass transit lines
Searat7 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
I think they should pay BTS the balance of the money owed to them before starting new projects. -
I have found it best to have a rule not to loan money in Thailand. In 19 years I have lost only 10,000 b which is not bad. If I see a good friend in need I would rather make the offer to help him out with a gift of money which was very much appreciated during Covid when I was stuck in my home country.

Thai PM seeks weekly meetings with central bank governor

A quarterly meeting would be more appropriate. Weekly meetings should be refused. -
Seventy Three Tourists Rescued after Speedboat Capsized in Satun
Searat7 replied to webfact's topic in Southern Thailand News
Speed boats used here are poorly built (thin hull) and often overpowered. Then they load boats with too many people and the captain drives like a cowboy. A recipe for disaster. -

Spending Money - Should I follow my Friends Advice ?
Searat7 replied to AlienBoy's topic in General Topics
You received some good financial/legal advice here but the first change I would make is to turn on the air conditioning- at least at night for comfortable sleep. -
I recently had a very bad experience at a private hospital in Bangkok. I needed laparoscopic surgery to repair a hernia and a small adjacent area. The nurse assured me I would receive estimate in advance but this did not happen. The morning after surgery ( I got back to my room at 2 am) 2 people arrived and told me I needed to sign estimate which I did because I was under influence of morphine. The amount was over 600,000 b and I had no choice but to pay to get out of there. Three weeks ago I met with a manager who told me she would look into my claim ( I want 50% back) but it would take time to investigate and go before a committee. This experience would never happen to a Thai person. Is it a law here that hospital must get patient to sign off on cost estimate IN ADVANCE ?

Is it Move Forward’s turn to have its cake and eat it too?
Searat7 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Why do writers constantly refer to Move Forward Party as “radical”. ? I think they are quite the opposite… -
Cabinet agrees to keep VAT at 7% for another year
Searat7 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I am dying to see how they will fund all of their populist schemes. If the VAT had been increased by just .25% a year it would have been at 8% a few years ago. The 20 b transport plan is of particular interest. I hope the BTS does not cooperate until the government has paid them the very substantial amount they owe.- 1 reply

I was in Samitivej a month ago for hernia surgery and they managed to keep me three nights. I hope you have signed off on an estimate before your procedure.

Probably figures that getting caught sleeping all the time during parliamentary sessions is not worth it. At 78 he is well beyond normal retirement age anyway.

Pheu Thai’s challenge to reduce electric train fares to 20 baht max
Searat7 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
They better think about settling a very large long-standing debt with the BTS first since Prayut kicked the can down the road. Will be interesting to see how the new government finances all of their goodies. -
Thai finance ministry has no immediate plan to increase VAT to 10%
Searat7 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Previous governments were afraid to increase from 7% to 8% so they are well behind where they need to be. With an annual increase of .25% they would be at 8% long ago. 10% is too high. -
The boats here are not well constructed, often overpowered and carrying too many passengers. The idiot in the second boat trying repeatedly to cross the wake of the first boat in close proximity is a very stupid move. With those conditions he should have been following the first boat at a safe distance

Slow pace of Biden’s reelection campaign feeds Democrats’ 2024 anxiety
Searat7 replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I see Joe, who is losing more mental acuity each week, barely finishing his present term and somewhere along the line a new team will be put forward as candidates for the election. What nobody wants is any chance that Kamala could become president- she is actually worse than Joe.
