  1. You eat a lot of processed cheese don't you? As in those indivudually packaged slices of cheese for about a 100 baht.

Hmmm I developed new allergies since moving to Bangkok 6 years ago. Occasionally breaking out in red itchy hives all over my body. Aside from that I regularly get really itchy spots on my face, if I resist the temptation to touch them they do nothing, if I itch or rub them they immediately swell up and to big ugly red spots that itch like mad, seems to come and go every couple of weeks or so. I have also had major dry itchy scalp, if I dont wash my hair every day it actually stinks.... I never had any of these problems before Thailand. Whats the deal? Pollution?
  2. And the first reaction of anyone receiving a distressed message/email from a friend?

Calling them. Everyone has a mobile phone, and more likely than not your friend will pick up and clear it right up....

Then perhaps calling their significant other, family or perhaps work place?

It boggles the mind that anyone would up and transfer funds based on an email. Healthy skepticism perhaps?

"We are a bunch of script kiddies/419'ers who have figured out there are more suckers than we can count out there in the world, and we'd like you to be one of them so please give us your account details and if you wouldn't mind your personal details, social security & credit card numbers. That would be great, mmk. Thanks very much.

  4. Thai ISP's are doing everything they can to limit torrent speeds from known public trackers without pissing off users too much.

Public trackers are notorious for users limiting their upload speeds, so it is quite likely you will connect to peers who only serve up 1 or 2 KB/s.

Some ISP's use a caching solution to try and serve you torrents quickly with the use of only local bandwidth. The problem is that they can not keep up with the number of torrents and the sheer bandwidth demands.

TOT generally speaking is the worst ISP together with Maxnet. If you have choices, use another ISP.

There is nothing you can do by yourself to improve the speed. I suggest contacting www.tci.or.th (tel: 02-634-6000) and asking if they can assist.

  5. Would be nice to know which ISP you use and what computer equipment and Internet equipment you have.

90% packet loss is abnormal even for the abysmal Thai ISP's, so there is some other issue(s) adding on to your problem. A likely culprit is the use of bittorrent, and/or a shared Internet connection in an apartment building where everyone is saturating the connection with <favorite online application>.

You also do not say if you are in Bangkok or any other province. I will assume you are in Bangkok, and know your way around a bit. I suggest you check out Third Place on Thonglor (http://www.thirdplacebangkok.com/). A very decent place to work. Last time I used them the price was 600 Baht for a month "membership" with a limited amount of free coffee/drinks. Or you could pay 100 baht per day with free coffee/drinks. The Internet connection was decent, but limited per user to 500 kbps and they asked you to refrain from using bandwidth/peer hungry applications such as bittorrent. They also have 2 conference rooms with facilities and space for up to 10 or so people. The cost to rent this I forgot, but a quick call to them should inform you.

  6. The tips above are incorrect for lithium-ion (and, more recently, lithium-polymer) batteries that are used in nearly every laptop manufactured in the last decade.

The “memory effect”, or the need to “refresh” or “deep-cycle” the battery by completely discharging before recharging, is stale knowledge from the time of NiCad and NiMH batteries. Lithium-ion batteries don’t suffer from the memory effect.

It’s also not bad to leave your laptop plugged in. In fact, it’s a good thing to keep it plugged in whenever you don’t need to be running on battery power.

Due to their chemistry, their capacity slowly diminishes with age. Laptop batteries usually lose most of their useful capacity 2-3 years after manufacture (not initial use).

If you use the laptop on battery power a lot, the battery lifespan will be shortened. This “wearing out” effect is much less severe than with older battery technologies, but is still present. This is why you should plug it in if it’s convenient.

When plugged in, the battery is not in use. The laptop’s power circuitry bypasses the battery unless it’s needed. Depending on how smart the charger is, it may occasionally poll and “top off” the battery if its charge decreases to a certain threshold below 100%, but this is rarely needed in practice.

Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries have the lowest self-discharge rates of any common battery technology, estimated at less than 1% per month and difficult to distinguish from the loss of capacity with age.

A battery only has electrical potential. If no juice is flowing, no chemicals are reacting, and there's no point in refrigerating the battery. Quite the contrary--since refrigeration slows a reaction, the electricity won't be there when you want it.

  7. http://www.tee-pak.com/en/index.html

As low as 200 baht per month. Yes. 200. Yes. per MONTH.

Edit: I should say that I just 5 minutes ago found this little gem while looking for a suitable place for 2 visitors in the 10-15k range for 3 weeks. It's a virtual goldmine for anyone on a real budget or someone just sick and tired of hotels overcharging and/or condo owners trying to turn a profit with prices way up there. This is Thailand after all. Most Thais from provinces and locals alike have to live someplace and I doubt they pay in the 10k plus range per month in rent. There must be thousands upon thousands of cheaper accommodation available... and tee-pak.com does a decent job of listing a boat load of them.

  8. I suggest you contact www.tci.or.th and file a complaint (this goes for everyone on all trouble ISP's)

How to complain, it's all written in thai... :)

    02-634-6000. Call them.

    @akarmaka:

Use a VPN proxy and you should have things loading and working fine.

True always tries to say that the "problem exists at my PC", and they go silent when I say that when I use a VPN proxy everything loads fine.

  9. trogers:

That still makes for 1600 or so Baht for the 3 weeks getting to and from the apartment, which is a one day rent.

What I have noticed is that small hotels and guest houses are very overpriced. Apartment rental over a short time period is a little tough to find in Bangkok strangely enough. It is very popular in Europe with week-to-week rental of apartments. It's cheaper than hotels by far too.

This leaves me with chain hotels and larger serviced apartments. They seem to be very price competitive. Maybe they have the advantage of "economy of scale"?

I now have two options, a centrally located serviced apartment at ~1600 a night or a slightly less central, but quite nearby, at 1100 a night. Both are of Grade-A quality, although getting a bit long in the tooth.

Still would prefer a bit less expensive though.

    :)

  10. The reason I ask for a lower price is because I have slightly less than 1600 baht per night for a centrally located serviced apartment. This is about 33,000 for the duration of the stay and in the worst case scenario I would make this selection. This of course includes proper in-house cleaning, breakfast and concierge services. Not to mention that the transport costs are lower. Even 120-160 baht a day for BTS coming and going for 2 people adds up over 3 weeks.

I appreciate the offer though trogers.

The 33k is over budget, and would love to have a 15k stay.

  11. A decent summary. Gives users an overview and can clear the fog for them a bit.

One note about the Linux bit though.

If you are looking for a versatile, VERY small (~ 100 MB), quick, fully featured Distro. there is only one: Puppy Linux.

They also have "Puplets" (Puplet Forum with latest work). These are essentially community modified versions of Puppy Linux that includes different softwares for different tasks.

Personally I use 3 different kinds for different tasks.

1 for Office work (includes Open office, GIMP, PDF writer etc etc).

1 for "show off" with Mac interface.

1 for PC maintenance with a lot of PC maintenance tools.

They all boot off USB flash memories and ALL PC's will accept to boot off the USB memory as long as they have a USB port and if you have installed your Puplet in "Floppy mode".

The one drawback is that the repository is limited, and requires modified versions of common softwares.

It is fantastically FAST though as the whole O/S and standard programs load into RAM at boot.

The system requirements are extremely low as well, and one could say that a Celeron 300 Mhz with 128 MB of RAM would run Puppy Linux well enough not to cause many frustrations.

Imagine you can get a full working operating system for the same size as some drivers for other operating systems....

  12. I am looking for some very temporary stay of 3 weeks (Mid March to Early April) at very reasonable rates. Hotels are either too expensive or less than desirable.

Does anyone have some suggestions where one could get a 3 week stay for 10-15,000 baht which is not a run down and/or in a remote area. I would prefer this place to be in or around Pratunam, Sukhumvit 11-21, or similar. This is for 2 people and would prefer a safer, quiet, no red-light area. Thanks very much.

  13. Oh ok... I'll chime in quickly.

Go to one of those Boncafe "How to operate a coffee shop" seminars at their concept shop on Ratchada. It's free.

However, the conclusion seems to be that the problem is that the market is very saturated at desirable areas and you will lose money if you decide to invest in only one location with nice decor etc. You can do it on a low budget, low cost, cheap selling price but it will not generate enough income to sustain a family. It might, at best, bring in a net profit of 5-7 k a month (without hiring staff). Boncafe will of course not tell you this, but will try and put a positive spin on the coffee market. They are after all in the business of selling coffee related products.

Besides, coffee raw materials in Thailand are surprisingly expensive.

  14. www.chefsxp.com

Only 60 Baht flat fee on top of the restaurant rates, even if you order from several restaurants at the same time. Chef XP's prices are often lower than restaurant prices, they do not include the service charge the restaurant normally charges in-house.

Forget foodbyphone as they are ridiculously overpriced.

How this concept would translate in a U.K. environment I am not sure. OP has to try and let us know.

  15. It seem to have a very good potential to do whatever the other, sometimes expensive, programs are doing.

Key word being potential... and it has never quite lived up to that potential. I have tried every major update to GIMP and it is always lacking compared to most other pro editing softwares.

It is the best -free- image manipulating software there is though.

  16. Fiat currency countries, without exception, crash and burn sooner or later. The longer it hangs on, the bigger the fall.

I strongly believe that divesting UK assets is the way forward for short term and long term investments. Making money just by using money can only work so long. If there is little-to-no manufacturing to back investments it will fail. This is why raw material exploitation and refinement is very profitable. /very simplified.

  17. The graph clearly states: Red line == Observations.

The observations are worse than the estimates.

You do realize that ice mass goes up and down depending on seasons and other small differences, but the trend is clearly less ice mass over time. You do not reverse a trend by stating that ice mass is a little more over a period of one year. You clearly see ice mass increases happening quite often by looking at the graphs. Ice mass increases a little here and there, but overall, over time, total ice mass is decreasing.

Personally I do not care as to why, how or other reasons. The point is, that it is happening. It could be global warming, sun spot activity, human farts, aliens or even ghosts. Doesn't matter, don't care, the results are clear.

I am now going to sit back and be labeled a multitude of things that you probably think are bad things. Go ahead, it doesn't change observed facts.

Again, I do not care as to why, how or if it is any other reason behind it. Also, keep in mind global climate continually changes both short and long term. It never stays the same. It is interesting to me to see someone argue observed facts and I'd like to discuss with you more about it. I want to know why someone thinks that acknowledging global climate change is so horrible. The planet has existed 5 (+- a billion) billion years and since when was the climate always the same?

So, go ahead and do some more name calling. It makes me feel oh-so-special. :)

(As a side note: raw data has nothing to do with scientists. It is simple raw data. Scientists take this data and analyze it and publish papers and opinion. I don't look at what scientists publish nor say, I look at the raw data and draw my own independent conclusions. These conclusions I have not shared, nor do I think I will.)
