Why do so many people on ThaiVisa feel the need to get involved in a pissing contest when questions like this are asked? The OP asked for advice, and the fundamental advice was to get a new a new passport as it was something he would have to do anyway at some stage. Advice was heeded - end of story! The individual anecdotes are totally irrelevant.

What the hell is a "Malaysian driving permit for Thai cars"? Last time I crossed in my Thai car, only a document from the Thai transport department in Mo Chit and a translation of the number plate plus the ownership documents (or a power of attorney were required).
Thanks for such a helpful post. So I guess its possible to drive through Padang Besar border then. After passing the border, do you know where is the Malaysian road department booth which issues the driving permit for thai cars? In Sadao, its booth is around 100 meters after passing Malaysian immigration. In Padang Besar there's a couple of places that will sort out the insurance for Malaysia as far as I can remember. It costs about 1200 - 1700 baht for three months of insurance cover, a shorter policy is around a couple of hundred baht cheaper. I went through there many a year ago, nowadays I prefer going through Sungai Kolok.
To be on the safe side, I'd sort out the insurance in Hat Yai if possible.
Padang Besar has a customs booth that makes the Sadao crossing look like hard work. Never seen that place busy, even during national holidays. The Dannok (Sadao) crossing has a hell of a lot more life than Pedang Besar for sure. You could get your insurance there and head back to the Padang crossing to see what it's like. Up to you.
The Duty Free shop at Dannok is far better, a bigger supermarket carrying a better range of western essentials.
Send me a message if you need help with insurance as my brother in law knows about these things. He lives in Hat Yai and will just give me the address and phone number of an office or two.
I hope you have a good journey regardless of where you go.
I have driven into Malaysia dozens of times over the years. I was stopped once to check if I had insurance about 12 years ago, but since then each journey into Malaysia has been totally painless. I've certainly never come across window tint checks or been asked to obtain a Malaysian permit for the car. Ever.

As someone already pointed out.
One Russian lady hit a shop assistant with a plastic coke bottle, two Russian ladies were arrested.
Did they also arrest the shop assistant accused of stealing from the ladies?
7-11 have cameras, even the keystone cops could identify the correct assailant (and check if she were really short-changed at the same time) within five minutes.
I've got to the point of holding up and waving around 1,000bht notes and asking if they can change this amount before handing them over now. Too many shops, restaurants and bars doing the you only gave me 500 (or 100) bht scam.
Another Thai police victimize foreigners story.
I've never bee cheated in an 7-11 and I use them most days and often give 1000 baht notes. On a separate issue, I got a taxi a few month back and gave a 100 baht note for an 80 baht fare. I told him to keep the change and left the taxi. Then as I was walking away he got out of the taxi and shouted after me. He said I'd given him 500 baht not 100, so he gave me 400 baht change. He could easily have driven off, but he didn't. I'm not sure why so many on here get ripped off regularly while others never do. Either the places they hang out, or something about the people. Judging from the attitudes on many farangs on TV (not you TP) I'm not surprised that they get ripped off. I'd probably want to rip them off as well, for being so disrespectful.
Yes, it sometimes seems there are two Thailands, the one I live in and the one that seems to leave certain individuals in a perpetual state of rage.
I've never been short-changed by anyone, although on several occasions I've been given too much change. I think some farangs have personal issues that cause them a great deal of worry and they manage to direct their frustrations onto those around them.
I cannot understand why people who are so unhappy about their lives in Thailand do not just go back to wherever they found life to be so great.
"sometimes seems there are two Thailands, the one I live in and the one that seems to leave certain individuals in a perpetual state of rage" is possibly one of the most appropriate responses I've seen on this forum.

One mistake I made was to leave the house with my fly undone... a bigger mistake was not wearing any boxers that day.

Did you used to work in Hat Yai, and did you come to that realisation in the lift at Central Hotel, by any chance?

Have a look at www.phuketspace.com.

Try Somkiat on 081 691 2961. Always on time and always does exactly what he says he'll do! He's not the cheapest, but worth paying a little extra for reliability, perhaps...

Valentine - where is Thanong Kwang?

Hi
Try www.rentphuket.net or www.rawai.info, depending on what part of the island you'd like to live.

I don't think any of us will ever understand the wai.
Check out www.whywai.com, which attempts to explain it.

PM me - I have a very reliable builder, who knows what he's doing, cares about his work and speaks good English. Not many of them around!

Hi ashdjin,
You don't need to pay that much for an apartment!
There are some very pleasant studio apartments for rent in Rawai, in the south of the island, at www.rawai.info. They're around 7,000 baht per month, 300 metres from the sea (with a sea view), and within walking distance of the bars and restaurants on Rawai Beach.
Check them out!

Break down the insurance fine print to the important parts:
WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY THE INSURANCE (GENERAL EXCLUSIONS)
Treatment for sickness or injury directly or indirectly caused if you choose to go to a region where there is martial law
Unless the illness was caused by martial law, he should be covered if he has insurance.
