  1. I agree that the banks are not out to cheat the customer, but I do know that they can be very lax in pursuing a problem unless you are persistant in pushing them to find the cause of the problem.

I accept that we only know one side of the story in this case, but if what has been told is correct then further action should be pursued.

  2. John Doe, I would think 6 months is more than adequate to investigate the matter. Also you will note the bank has said they will not replace the missing funds.

As to having that amount of money in their account you must have 800,000 for three months for your retirement visa and if you are like my husband and myself we each have our visas independent of each other so that means 1,600,000 unless we go the pension verified by our consulate route. (Which we do)

Also with the baht getting stronger and stronger many felt it wise to bring in a larger amount of money than usual to avoid the loss in currency exchange.

  3. I bank with Bank of Ayudhya in Hua Hin. I deposit my Social Security checks monthly and it takes approximately 10 days to clear. I just checked and they seem to charge a flat fee of 200 baht plus a 3 baht stamp duty. The reason I say a flat fee is because when I deposit my husbands SS check (which is more than mine :o the charges are the same. Have never had a problem with Ayudhya and they are most helpful.

  4. Social Security suggest that they be deposited by direct deposit but it is required that you use Bangkok Bank and you have to have it into a savings account. The problems that causes is you can not have an ATM card or electronic bankin that it beg. In other words you have to go into the bank that you established your account with and withdraw the money or go in each month and have it deposited into another account with an ATM attached to it in the same branch.

When we requested it be a joint account they said could not do. I ask if it was a bank policy or US policy. They stated US policy. I then showed them that on the form from Social Security it has an a place for marking joint account. They then said that they would open the account as joint but if there was a problem they would close the account and open up separate accounts for us. They then proceeded to tell us if one of us should die the account would be frozen for up to a year, so we said OK open separate accounts. I then ask what happens if one of us becomes disabled and can not come into the bank to withdraw our funds. BLANK LOOKS. You have to come in. I then said lets go back to the joint account and I could worry about it being frozen later. Figured I could withdraw the funds before anyone could freeze the account. OK was the response but now said you both have to come in together to withdraw any funds. At this point we decided to leave things as they are and have them mailed to us.

There is no fee for this. When we put in a change of address there is a space where you state how you want to receive your checks. We then had to go into Bangkok US Embassy and have them certify a copy of our passport and the forms we filled out. We then mailed them to the Philippines. After that it was about 4 weeks before my husbands checks started arriving and after 4 months we went into the Embassy and ask if they could check on mine as it had been submitted at the same time. Shortly after that my checks also started arriving.

Sorry for the long saga. Hope you can wade through all of it.

  5. Hi Jeff

My husband and I each are here on an O visa for retirement purposes.

I bank with ANZ Bank in New Zealand and when I want to transfer money from there I call them and request an electronic transfer. I did advise them that I would be doing this so they could expect the requests. And I only transfer to accounts in my name. I also request that it be transferred in New Zealand dollars as we seemed to get a better exchange rate here.

I also would mention that as a non resident of New Zealand we only pay a 2% on the earnings. Although right now we are taking a beating on the exchange rate. Fortunately we transferred a chunk of money before the the current economic crisis.

We looked into having our Social Security checks from the US done as a direct deposit but ran into a few problems and decided to just have them mailed. They are mailed to the Embassy in Bangkok and then put into another envelope and sent to us. Over all we receive them on about the 15 to the 17 of each month rather than the first.

We have never had a problem with the mail although I have heard other say that they have not always received all their mail. Once again it probably depends on your location and who is doing the delivering.

    Best of Luck.

  6. I bank with Ayudhya here in Hua Hin. Had no problem in opening an account and regularly transfer money in from New Zealand. If I request the transfer at 7:00am Thai time I have it in my account by 9:00am the same day.I also deposit my US Social Security checks with no problem. It takes about 10 days for the money to clear on the checks and the exchange rate is very close to the Bloomburg posted exchange for that day. There is a small service fee but it is in the acceptable range.

I do know that nothing is standard from bank to bank or even within the same bank. It is sort of up to the luck of the draw.

  7. Don't know why it would not be on the safe medicine list as it is readily available there. But is around $8.00 for the small jar. I used to bring it back to Aust. with no problems.

  8. I can't really advise you on your purchase other than to sayI have a HP/Compaq Presario 2500 and have had multiple failures with it. The cooling fan replaced, CD writer replaced (still won't write to the new one) problems with it getting hot and shutting down without warning, battery completely died after about 8 months even when I followed the instructions about monthly using the capacity before recharging.

I am now in the process of looking for a replacement, but not sure what to buy either.

    Good luck on your selection.

  9. Went in recently and got our 5 year license in Cha Am. At that time we were told when we renew in 5 years we will have to take the class.(all in Thai) They never mentioned the test. Asked my Thai friend and she said they told her the same thing. Of course this being Thailand in 5 years who knows what the procedure will be.

  10. A couple of years ago when I applied for my social security benefits I tried the on line route. Discovered that it is only for those living in the USA. You can not do it from overseas.

Fortunately for me I was going to the US to visit family and I applied at a Social Security office while there. I received my first check in Australia within 2 weeks.

Things did not go quite so smoothly when we transferred our address to Thailand. Although no real complaints other than they stopped direct depositing my check in Australia and started sending it to my temporary address in the USA without me requesting it.

I am now in the process of setting up direct deposit with Bangkok Bank and finding it is a bit of a hassle, but probably better than having the checks mailed to the consulate in Bangkok and then mailed to me here in Cha Am.

  11. This is not just in Chang Mai. Husband and I went to Hua Hin immigration to get a letter for our 5 year drivers license and she said fill out form in box 8. Wasn't until we were filling out the form we noticed it was the TM30. No problems but found it interesting that she listed me on the husbands form even though we have 2 condos and I am listed on my license as living in one and he in the other.

Happy to say we both managed to get our 5 year drivers license.

  12. Whether it will work in the UK depends on what bands UK and Thailand uses. If they are on different withths you must have a phone that has the capabilities of changing from one to the other. The Samsung that I bought in Australia is a tri-wire and I can use in in Thailand or USA but have to switch the bands. My husbands Samsung (different model) bought here in Thailand does not have that capability.

To check the band on our Samsung we go into Network Services and can select the band needed there.

    Hope this helps

  13. I think you will find that not all phones purchased overseas will work here. When I bought mine in Australia I was advised I would have to purchase the tri-wire one. Which was considerably more expensive. I have now used it in the US, Australia and Thailand by simply changing the SIM card and changing the bandwidth. My husbands phone that was purchased here in Thailand does not have the capability of changing bandwidths. By the way they are both Samsung.
