  1. I see that I did not respond to the post asking for departure time

Depart the X-Centre in Mae Rim at 10 AM Dec 8th, so if you want breakfast and socializing get there prior.

We have arranged for 4 pick up trucks to transport those riding road bikes from the main road to the school and 2 more trucks to haul the donated items

    See you on the 8th

  2. I use a US based freight forwarding service and they are now offering TNT as an alternative to DHL or Fed-Ex

I know all about paying duty with Fed-Ex and DHL and do not have a problem with this.

Does TNT act as a customs broker like the other 2 carriers, any experiences, and or issues?

I am tempted to give them a go as the rate is a fair bit less with comparable transit times

  3. As a matter of fact we are looking for a corpulent volunteer for this years Dec 24 give away event at Suan Doc hospital

By way of clarification, The Chiangmai ToyRide has several give away events during the year, only one of which is Christmas related, and that is limited to the aforesaid corpulent gentleman brightening the lives of some very, very sick kids.

  4. Dec 26 or Boxing Day, is the planned day for the give away ride event.

We would like to get the computers repaired ahead of time and take them back that day.

I imagine that you are right and the OS and software is pirated, but not sure. It could be something as simple as no anti-virus software, or OS updates, but at this point we do not know.

Makes one wonder what will happen with the one laptop per child election promise, however that is a different question.

  5. I do not see a way of editing my post, so a correction is in order

I am confused between out next two upcoming events and the school that needs the PC help is for the Dec 26 event

The name of the school is Mae Mah and is off the road to Chiang Dao just where the construction begins and then in about 8-9 Km

  6. The Chiangmai ToyRide is planning a Dec 8 event at an orphan boarding school near Mae Sa. The school is in fairly good nick, so this event is centred around supporting the kids rather than providing infrastructure. One need however is that 5 of the 2 year old computers "do not work". As I understand it these computers were donated, however there is no budget for repairs or maintenance so they sit dead with no educational value to the kids.

Is there a PC expert here that would be willing to take a look at these machines, determine the problem, and fix them. The Chiangmai ToyRide will arrange to deliver the machines to you, and pay for any parts, but we would hope that you could donate your expertise to do the work.

Take a look at our website to see what the Chiangmai ToyRide is all about and hopefully you can see it in your heart to give these kids a hand in life

  7. I posted this on the bike forum, so hopefully the Mods will allow this one as well

The Chiangmai ToyRide is planning another give away ride event Dec 8, 11.

This time the site is a small village school about 20 Km from the turn off to Pai, then about 4 km uphill on a rough dirt road to the village. I will post the GPS coordinates, time and meeting place, and hopefully a map, but please mark this date on your calendars.

The last 4 km is uphill and a bit rough but the locals have little trouble on a Wave so it cannot be too bad. No problem on a dual purpose or KLX type bike but unless the road gets a bit of work between now and then it is a bit much for a big road bike. We are now organizing transport for the give away swag, and 4WD truck transport from the main road for those riding road bikes. One of the local villagers will stand guard over our bikes down at the main road so no worries there.

The final logistics are still being organized, and I will post again when we have transport arranged in the event that the road is not improved.

We rode today to check out the next proposed project after this one. It is another school 10 km off the main road to Chiang Dao just where the construction begins. A good single lane concrete track all the way but for about 1 km. I went in today on my Versys with road tires and no problem. I could have done it on my Harley Dana but not on a Bagger

Projected date is Boxing Day or Dec 26 to you Yanks.

Details are still being nailed down and will advise

Please see our website at www.chiangmaitoyride.com for more info

  9. Impossible to answer with any degree of certainty without some in depth knowledge of the underlying soil, groundwater level, pore pressure dissipation, and settlement data since the fill was placed.

When do you expect to begin construction - can you want a year or so for pore pressures to dissipate and settlement to flatten out

What type of foundation is planned

How big a house and how many stories. Presumably concrete beams and block infill.

Are you willing to drill a borehole for geotechnical data - this may serve double duty as a water well if groundwater conditions allow

Are you willing to drive piles and make this all irrelevant. The cost is not as high as you might think

Are you planning a swimming pool

So many questions that could have been avoided with input from a geotechnical engineer, and cheap insurance at local engineering rates. With a small house, a single borehole will answer a lot of questions

Lots of people wing it, however I would not rely on Somchai's past experience in foundation work unless the risk in getting it wrong did not matter to me.

  10. RE discontinued the 1954 UK designed "classic iron barrel engine" and now have a new EFI unit construction model. The overall design is retro, and I am glad to see that they are trying to get back to their roots, but for some reason the unit engine, LH shift, and subtle changes just do not do it for me. See:

    My link

The interesting question, as always in Thailand, is what is the cost. Even though a 500, or 350, performance is anemic to say the least, and there are only so many that will go for the retro look. Enfields do not enjoy a stellar reputation for QC, customer service, or reliability and given the choice between Japanese modern engineering and reliability VS a bike made in India the price will have to be very, very attractive. I suspect that they will not try and do business on price alone so sales will be limited. These bikes are not Japanese foolproof so there will need to be a good country wide dealer network, and spares.

IMHO the odds are stacked against RE but good luck to you

I own a classic engined 500 Bullet like this:

  11. I will wait until they have ABS, and if not then I will live without it

If they want to keep the price point low, I wonder why they are not offering ABS as an option? Having had it on the last 2 bikes, I would not buy another new bike without it.

The technology is there so offer it at a premium if necessary, but do not compromise safety and performance for bean counting

As an aside, to warm up Mrs Hoghead to the idea of yet another bike, I mentioned last night that Ducati where making bikes in Thailand and at 1/2 the price of imported bikes. Her first comment was that the current Owners of imported Ducs would be pissed that the marked value had been undercut.

  12. I have literally thousands of songs that itunes thinks are dupes. An itunes dupe search lists them, but I do not see any way of deleting every other one, and can only laboriously click on each one individually

Surely there is a better way?

I have run dupe programs on my hard drive and am relatively dupe free so I do not understand how itunes thinks there are so many

  13. I could not find such a service, although it can be done for small parts in a cabinet, or using sand on a large scale. No dippers, soda or walnut blasting that I could fine.

A fender is simple and you should be able to do a good job with a Scotchbrite buffing pad in a mini grinder. Labour is cheap

  14. When in Canada I bought a BMC 579/04 air filter for an 09 and up ER6 thinking that it would be the same as my 2011 Verys - not so

I went to Kawi in CM today hot to buy the proper BMC one and in spite of standing in front of a large banner proudly claiming that they are a BMC Dealer they do not have one and tried to flog me a DNA brand for 2600 B.

DNA lists the pre 09 ER6 as a 2011 Versys filter. Interesting as it is smaller than the post 09 model.

Where in Thailand can I buy a BMC?

BTW the 09 and later ER6 one is for sale at 1900B
