  1. I've been using the 4GB Asus EeePc 701 for about a year. I use it when I travel because the 'traditional' lap top was just a pain to lug through the airports.

The light weight and small size are a huge bonus - it's good enough for email, and the bundled software handles Excel, Powerpoint and Word well enough to work on the move. The quick boot and shut down is also great when doing a quick check of mail before a flight or wifi-ing over a coffee.

I brought some 4GB Asus EeePc for the kids and what annoyed me was [tounge in cheek] (1) too cheap compared to the other note book we use (2) works too well for what it is (3) upset we never went that route for the office notebooks .

All in all they are the best for users on the move without a doubt.

  2. Im thinking about getting UBC Digital satallite installed, I was wondering if there are any HD (High Definition) Channels?

If so are they DVB-S2 using H.264 decoding ? And what are the SD channels (Standard Definition) presumably DVB-S. MPEG2 ?

They have been testing HD on their MDDS service in Bangkok so a DVB-T unit will work for that. Having said this they still have a DVB-S transponder flagged for HD on their satellite service with a test pattern laying out on it on 12.720 GHz - H - 30000 named RS116 and RS118.

Their SD service as you call it is in DVD-S mp2 4:2:0

  4. Get a good brand namne like Samsung instead of those no namers even tho the price diff is big.

Pray tell us why is this?

Because they look a heck of a lot better. Just compare in the shop.

Last time I checked Samsung looked the best, Sony was great as well, but for a higher price, LG looked pretty good too. Others (also brand names, they didn't have no names where I looked) seemed washed out compared to these Samsungs. Color/brilliance/brightness/contrast are pretty different between manufacturers, and much more important than specs.

If I had to take a guess how a random no-name LCD would look next to these... well, surprises are possible but chances are they'd have a considerably worse picture quality. Just guessing.

Very very subjective indeed, not the kind of answer I expected :o as 1920x1080i is HDTV and with or without the brand name the specs are very much the same. As the OP posted this is about budget priced units right?

  5. We have a good local construction crew who just started building our driveway in Amphur Satuk near the Moon River. Have any Thai Visa Members in Buriram hired a backhoe tractor with perhaps a front loading bucket? If so what were the rates and can you recommend any particular tractor operator/owner? A small job to excavate about 150 square meters, about 40 cm deep and load the extra dirt onto a family dump truck. Thanks in advance for any information on backhoe rates and availability in Buriram.

We are a bit further North East of you but over the weekend we hade a 1.25 rai house site cleared, graded and flattened by two tractor units for 3,200 and it took them a day and a half to do it and a further 120 trucks of back fill cost 22,000.

  6. All commentary is in English.

From TVNZ no less, did you note the kiwi accent :o

I confess I haven't watched that much Astro coverage.

I have it on here 24/7 - there is a press release from Astro and TVNZ if you want to google it, saying how TVNZ is providing Astro and many other networks the content for the games.

  7. As far as all the events listed by the poster, we really don't get any of them here. dam_n, wish I had my Astro TV like I did in 2004 which had 3 dedicated olympics sports channels running 24 hours a day.

They (Astro) have 10 active channels and 1 overwiew channel (pictured below) this time, by far the best coverage in Asia this time around ..

    Both support 1920x1080i on hdmi

  9. AIS has the same procedure!

    Cheers.

Confirmed....my wife did this same thing about a year ago. We went to the AIS Customer Service Center in Shin II Tower, they sent us across the road to the Police Station, about 10 minutes to do a lost/stolen phone report, back to AIS with a piece of paper, give them some bahts and back comes a new SIM with the old number provisioned.

and the good news it is an update SIM too, with all the new features added which my old one of 10 years did not have :o

  11. It will hook to your computer via Bluetooth or a USB cable. I have been all over Issan and between AIS and Dtac, have had no problems finding EDGE coverage.

Agreed I use the Moto L6 (el cheapo phone) with a USB to my notebook (as my notebook does not have bluetooth) so it also charges the phone and is great all over Thailand, and great in the car, to keep the kids quite for hours. I was using it in Chong Mek over the weekend, and you can not get more Issan than Chong Mek unless you fall over the border to Laos or Cambodia :o

  12. We have many ad hoc positions available for sports fans who want free entry to various sporting events across the Kingdom and around the region, and to be paid to be at the event to provided ad hoc phone reporting and commentary to supplement the main TV play outs to our offices in Europe.

Immediate need: Tennis fans, who are English speakers (fluent if possible) and German speakers (no problem if you do not speak both - English first) for the upcoming ATP tennis tournament in Bangkok on September 23 – 28.

You will be paid per event or on a daily basis, free admission to the event and all the required kit will be provided and there will also be a supervisor to support you on site. However you must prove to be a reliable person who can be called on when required in the future.

It does not matter if tennis is your cup of tea, please still feel free to register your interest and arrange for an interview stating all your sports interests (we cover most events) to PM: joncl or ring me on 081.830.6401 to discuss more.

  13. Some of you may not approve of this, but for others I would appreciate your advice. My friend has suddemly announced he is coming from the UK to Pattaya for a few nights on the town

The phone is the least of his worries - his passport will soon have these big Thai stamps in it and then again why will he be using the passport when all Euroland has free borders, his wife might ask :o

  14. It is probably the first thread about satellite TV where no one plugs in Jsat, though they are pretty much useless when it comes to pirated stuff like Astro or SA Dreamcast (?). On the Internet they tell you they do the dishes only, but they can put you in contact with the right people to get those illegal SIM cards, that's all.

Which means what, did we miss something here?

  15. Has anyone received a delivery from UPS, DHL or FEDEX in the village far from a city in Thailand? I am located 120k from Ubon Ratchathani near the Chong Mek border and my potential employer needs to send me an employment package.

You should not have a problem if it is addressed correctly, as I once received a package in Sirindhorn near you OK ..

  16. googled "news gadget" - rather negative. Got a lot of hits but still no idea how to get rid of the msn headlines and getting the ones that I want to have instead.

Click on add gadget and then from that menu click on browse/download gadgets, easier ...

  17. It has the 2.3 meter movable dish, Dynasat DigiBox 3000 and NextWave EX600 Stereo Satellite Receiver Antenna Positioner..Both boxes have remotes.

Dynsat stopped selling these boxes about 3 years ago. The digibox is a blind scan box, and will still work on the free to air channels only. These two boxes you mention above do not take codes that steal networks at 146e or anywhere for that matter, so do not waste your time trying. As they are this old I would suspect your dish is only equipped with the C band dish electronics (LNB) and you should have access to most C band satellites from 68.5e (in our west) down to 166e (In our east).

Check out this satellite listing web site and see what you might be able to see (only look at the Free channels as that is all these boxes will do) - Lyngsat Asia Satellite listings

  18. Does anyone know if Hwy 9 "SOUTH" of BKK is finished and if the route is completed? Maps still show it as under construction.

    Thanks in advance.

Looked very good today on the way down and back to BKK - no delays at all (been good for the last 6 weeks or more)

  19. An hour ago Youtube wasn't working, and never has on this computer. After the upgrade, it is.

I'm on TOT. I'll be disappointed if it's just a coincidence that I did the upgrade at the same time as they unblocked the site.

It has never gone, so just coincidence ...
