  2. I think the full word is ถ้าหาก which means if but people shorten it to ถ้า or หาก which can both be used for the same meaning..but ถ้า is more widely used..being Thai I don't even remember the last time I said หาก..It's more like an ancient funny way of saying ถ้า if you ask me :) which is why it's used more in songs and poems.

  4. I think many people do not know what it takes to take a baby elephant away from his mother to work on the streets or in shows..I think you have to be mental to ever support these sons of ******* ...Stop feeding elephants on the streets or go see elephants shows. It is pretty mental in my opinion to ever think animals are there to entertain human beings. Many baby elephants die because of this cruel action just so farang tourists can go see a stupid 15-min show.

  5. I never remembered the female's voice in bts saying kha but maybe I don't use it often enough. Anyway I do not think it's neccesary to be polite when announcing something that should sound quite formal.

I also don't like the wai at Tesco lotus. Usually when people wai you you wai them back because you know them or you accept their greetings or getting to know them whatever but to have a complete stranger waiing you to thank you for using their services is a bit awkward yes..I mean what are you supposed to do back nod or something?

But at least I prefer this than in some western countries where customers are to thank the cashiers I mean what's that all about? Interesting that it seems to be the other way around in the western world I notice that farangs say thank you a lot for everything and they seem to appreciate every little thing that Thai people don't even give a * about which is the reason farang customers are favored in all services industry in Thailand while Thai customers are seen to never be satisfied with anything and certainly never say thank you haha. It's like when Thai people often complain about Thai airways services when given the exact same services all you get from farang passengers are praises!! Makes us wonder what kind of terrible lives farangs must have had in their countries that set up such low expectations!! :)

  6. Vongdean beach is becoming famous now and lots of resturants and activities (but known to be gay beach for Thais) but it's cheaper and worth checking out I think. Samed has always been very popular even with all this economic and political turmoil so the hotel price has gone up a lot especially for the new hotels on Sai Kaew beach. I went there last week and it was pretty packed with tourists both thai and farang and for a villa that looks pretty crappy and should have cost 700 baht at most now costs 1,500 :o

I stayed at Sai Keaw beach resort and I think they are still offering good deals from 1,500-5,000 a night depends on room types. I really like the resort , it has 2 swimming pools and on the quieter end of the beach but you can probably find many cheaper ok places.

The Fee is only for Sai Kaew beach which I find bit strange, when I went to Ao proa beach I didn't have to pay entry.

  7. The last thing I worry about is how this will drive tourists out of the country. This world is going backward it seems cos the govt has became more and more controlling over things that should be basic human rights and I think this goes in many countries around the world. In some states in America you cant even be seen holding a bottle of alcohol and drinking in public I heard? You cannot drive with a bottle in your reach? I mean come on! I think it's funny that they think smoking and drinking is such a threat to society but when it comes to things like crimes, corruption and global warming they do not seem to be so excited to make new regulations or maybe they will blame alcohol and smoking for all problems that happen in the world? People don't drink in muslim countries and if anyone think it's an ideal world maybe they should move there!!

  8. Where does it cost 3 bahts a day to leave things plugged in? Thailand? I certainly did not know that!! The thing is many people has weird obsessions over small house hold things like that, my mom being one of them and I learned that it can be hurtful to pick a fight over the silliest thing with someone you love so you just learn to live and accommodate them. What I think is I'd go much further to be able to be with someone I love..let alone plugging in the fan 8 times a day..just as long as they are not hurting themselves or other people I don't care if they want me to walk around carrying shit in my pocket because it doesnt make me miserable..what makes me miserable is when people I love are miserable :)

  9. Maybe a lot of Thai men growing up have seen farang girls on "holiday mode" who dont really have understanding of the culture so dress in ways Thai wouldnt consider appropriate. Even if they are not "bad" girls, their dress and mannerisms reflected a "looser" moral than a "good girl" should have.

I recall once seeing a couple of very pretty girls in Bangkok, tanned, and looked like they had just come from the beach. The were walking around the outer wall of one of the popular Wats (not sure if they were going to go in or not). All eyes were on them, some goggle-eyed, some lust-filled, some looking in disgust. Basically they had very short skirts on, bikini tops, and a loose scarf wound around their necks. I remember the image well because it just seemed so out of place.

I think western females can sometimes present a bad picture in the eyes of other cultures, even if they are truly lovely people. Im not saying its right or wrong (although i think the girls above should have known better), its just we should be aware that how we conduct ourselves in other countries often reflect on our culture/nationality as a whole. Sadly.

I agree with Eek about the holiday mode thing. People tend to be more loose away from home and this goes for both men and women. But you have to be blind to not see how thai girls behave these days and they're not even on holidays! Any western guy who's been to Thailand would say Thai girls are much easier to bed than western girls and I'm not talking about hookers. A guy friend told me you can easily pick up girls from RCA etc. I think the number of motels in this country says it all.

If there's anything bad about western girls I think it's the way they act too much like men sometimes, some can be rude, aggressive and loud while Thai girls are taught to be modest, polite and patient.

  10. Japanese cars are easy and cheap to maintain. They hardly ever break down. They are also easy to drive as everything is so light from the stiring wheel to the brake. Honda's targeting upper market so the price is generally higher than Toyota, Nissan and Mitsu but I don't think anything's wrong with Toyota except interior design which is a bit out of dated. I've used Honda before and recently changed to Toyota Altis and I'm loving it. I wouldn't recommend a Vios because a car that small doesn't look safe on highways and motorways. Service doesnt usually cost more than 2000 each time for regular check-up. They don't consume as much petrol as europian cars but of course not as safe in crashes!! If ur looking for something a bit luxury then perhaps Lexus can also be a good choice :o

  11. And don't say Thai women have bad tempers because I know for a fact that we are much much more patient than western women. The chance of us getting violent also much much less. The majority of thai women are nothing like women who work in or around tourist areas. But maybe the tourists are not easy to put up with :o

  12. I think the question is when is it NOT ok to hit anyone? :D For centuries force and violence equal power so no surprise that not everybody understands why a lot of saliva have to be wasted in a fight.

When I was growing up it was more than ok for teachers to hit their students or parents to hit their kids and I think today it still is in Thailand. Thais even believed you cannot raise good children without hitting them a bit when you wanna teach them a lesson. I think this silly belief somehow give ways to sadistic parents who like beating up their kids for no good reasons. I've seen a mother kicking her little boy on the street because he wouldn't stop crying or something. I was driving pass quickly so I didn't do anything but I don't think i know what to do if i was walking by. Anyway I was thinking that I would not be surprised or angry at this boy if he grew up to be a rapist or a wife-beater. I am also not angry with the mother because I think she had it bad herself. So it's all part of a bad cycle isn't it :o

Even stranger thing is what happen in Thai soaps if you ever watch one, it's almost like COOL for people to hit one another and for men to rape women. The leading actor always rapes the leading actress and they end up happily ever after together!! You have to be mental to call this entertainment haha and they want to ban people smoking and boobs on TV? So smoking is evil and raping is a nice way to express love umm makes sense...:D

  13. No thais don't lie a lot and some of us do plan things ahead. This doesn't have much to do with Thai culture, some of us grow up in very organized and respectful families while others don't just like in any country.

I think the hardest thing for farangs living in Thailand if not having thai colleaques is get to know Thais because middle-class Thais don't usually want anything to do with farangs. Good Thai girls also don't really like farangs, that's why you often end up with crazy girls. Anddd when you are with crazy girls you also look silly hence no good Thais want to know you plus you guys are so good at making yourselves look bad by hanging around soi cowboy etc. Funny how many farangs think Thais look up to them. It is embarrasing to be seen with farangs not the other way around so if I were you I'd start doing something about that today!!!

  14. I read in the news there are about 20,000 condo units remaining in the market and it should take 3 years to clear the stock. I think Thai people never had reasons to buy condos until petrol price went up like crazy, the traffic also got much worse and small houses in the middle of nowhere now costs at least 6 million!! All these together with the modern lifestyle and BTS lines forced high demand in inner-city living although I'd say it's more like a punishment to live in city areas of Bangkok which can only be described as smelly and ugly.

The infinity building looks almost complete today so we will soon find out how many units will be transferred. Anyway You'll be surprised to learn how much some som-tum and noodle sellers make in one day..Many people who sell something and not work in an office in Thailand can make up to 100,000 a day so 100,000 per sqm is not a big deal for them and many high-end projects have the majority of thai buyers so the 49% ownership share is not really a problem except in Pattaya, Phuket and Samui but the rest of the units can be sold as leasehold.

I think the property price in Thailand reflects the big gap between the rich and the poor. Compare to the average wage Thailand must be with the most expensive properties in world? The rent starts at 6,000 a month for a tiny tiny studio in a reasonably clean looking building when most people make 10,000 a month. You dare not dream of renting 1-2 Bedroom apartments if ur Thai. 3-star Hotel now start from 3,000 a night and I see lots of hotels I wouldn't even give 1 star for the same price in famous locations. Something's really really wrong here!!

  15. As a Thai I think it always comes down to "classes" of people which you have to admit exists in most developing countries and it's not about being rich or poor but the fundamental of belief, thoughts and morality. I cannot speak for all thais but growing up in Thailand and all I never find myself much different from the western people that I know in what we mainly find rude or polite, right or wrong. There are small things like throwing things onto the table and thinking old people are "your friends" which annoy me but that's not really a big deal.

Education is a joke in this country so it's not about that either. You do not learn anything useful going to thai schools I swear. They never teach you to be sensitive to other cultures nor to be open-minded. Most thais have very funny ideas of western cultures..

What your wife's family did was rude and it's strange she doesn't get protective of you. If my family did something like that to my husband I'd put them in their places right away. I mean come on it's ridiculous! Thai people make fun of each other all the time about weights and skin colours etc. but cos most people don't mind but if you find out someone is hurt or offended by your joke and not stop that just makes you an asshol_e not Thai!!

  16. I'd say this is the best year ever to travel in Thailand because it will never get any cheaper and on top it's not too crowded :o

One good thing that came with the closure of the airport is that us Thais can finally travel at reasonable price!! Bad news for you guys really good promotions are for thai residents only. Anyway i still don't see hotels in popular locations giving much discounts. Or they do from like a crazy 10,000 bahts a night to 8,000 bahts a night thank you very much!! These hotels are usually overbooked during high season but this year I heard it's like 50-70% occupancy rate for most hotels. The way room rates were going up I think it's good to put on a break sometimes.

  17. Last time I went I stayed at AANA (Ao proa beach). I went around the island checking out many resorts and hotels and I'd say this is the best deal. This is like a 4-star hotel for 3000+ a night (internet rate) for the same price you get shitty hotels on white sand beach. I went over a year ago so maybe the price has gone up. The only problem is that this hotel is a bit far from the city and restuarant areas so you need to rent a bike or a car.

  18. By the way, don't forget the government LET people take both airports so if anyone is to be blamed for this it's the govt. This is to be expected and the govt know this would happen but still nothing planned. All they wanna do is talk shit and pray the red and yellow will fight each other to death so they won't have to bother find a scape goat. State of emergency has never been so meaningless.

  19. I have a friend who is renting a small(around 20 sqm) fully furnished studio in a nice new building on Sukumvit road at 15,000 a month so I think you can definately find one. Good luck with the search :o

I think 14,000 for Ramkanghang is just overprized even for a room that big!!

  20. In a normal economical situation I don't think any reputable property companies would give thai customers more discount because not only that is devaluing their own assets and destroying foreign customers' trust because but it will also look awful comparing to the projected cashflow which is not usually made with varied discount rates in mind. To sell fast you don't advertise your units' start price at 5 million and expect people to assume they could get it at 4million so normally the price is already fixed at an attractively low rate. If you know no one you can normally easily get up to 10% discounts. The discount depends more on the sales period, the number of units you buy, the market type (high-low), the connection you have and the economy not the nationalities of buyers at all.
