  1. It is an onboard NIC and I might agree with that advice but I cannot understand the business of the firewall turning itself back on each time. I have suggested uninstalling the NIC then reloading the drivers and seeing if that makes a difference. However I will see if they can find another NIC if that doesnt work.

  2. The router and network cable have been connected to another computer with no problems. When connected to the problem computer the network connection is shown firewalled and the XP firewall is once again On even though it had been turned off. The router and cable are on and connected so that is why I think this is software related.

  3. My friend is trying to configure access to the internet via his network card and a Belkin router. His computer is running XP Home with SP2 and he is using Zone Alarm as his firewall. Every time he tries to connect to his router or the internet he finds that the Windows firewall has turned itself back on and the following message appears on his LAN connection and the 1394 Firewire

    1394 Connection

    Disabled Firewalled

    1394 Net Adapter

    Local Area connection

    Network Cable Unplugged Firewalled

Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter…Red cross

In the set up for the LAN he has selected the correct network card and his TCP and DNS are set for auto.

I know how to disable the windows firewall in services but is there any way of uninstalling the XP firewall altogether or is there some other solution to this problem?

  4. My friend mislaid his return ticket while in Bangkok. Filed a police report and took it to show Etihad with his passport but even though they could clearly see his name on their computer refused to issue a new ticket without receiving confirmation from HQ which they said could take several days. Their staff in Bangkok were most unhelpful. He was told that he would have to purchase a new ticket to fly back to London with them. Needless to say he flew back with another airline. Followed his experience up with a letter to their customer services but never received any reply from them. I flew with Emirates, great planes and great service, they even upgraded me on one leg of the journey.

  5. Most of my tapes are pre-recorded versions of old tv series some of which may be still obtainable. However as I enjoy playing around with computers getting them converted will be something I will enjoy doing. Thanks for the helpful suggestions I think a visit to Pantip is the next stage.

  6. I went to the Intercontinental (Opposite The Erewan Hotel) this year because last year I had an excellent time there. This year was very disappointing and I got the impression that it was just like any other night except I was charged double. Last year they even had a buffet wine bar but even that had gone this year. I will choose another venue for next year, can anyone recommend based on their experience this year?

  7. Use the XP search function to find the *.pst file(s) on one machine and then copy those *.pst files to a directory of your choosing on the other machine. You can rename the file, for instance "2006.pst." Before starting Outlook on the machine you moved the file to, go to CONTROL PANEL, then click on "MAIL." A "Mail Setup" dialogue box will open. Click "Data Files" button and follow the instructions listed on the "Outlook Data Files" dialogue box that opens.

Here's an article on dealing with Outlook PST files you may find worthwhile.

Many thanks for your help both computers now identical Outlook folders

  8. I use Outlook on a laptop and a desktop in a home environment. Is there any way of synchronizing the folders on my laptop with the folders on my desktop? I have done it the long winded way using CSV's to copy each folder but that did not help me with the calendar. Is there some pst file that I could back up on one machine and transfer to the other. I am using Outlook 2003 and Windows XP professional on both machines.

  9. When you buy it from Microsoft you get the disk, some OEM vendors you need to request one from (or pay 10 or 20 dollars in some cases). This can besolved by asking "Do I get a Windows Disk with this machine?" before you buy. If the product validation fails, call Microsoft Support with the info from you certificate of authenticity and it'll be sorted in five minutes.

In any case, this all has nothing to do with stealing software. If you don't like the reliability or service you get from a certain product, go to another product. Just like if you think Nissan makes crappy cars, you buy a Toyota instead. You don't go out and steal a crappy Nissan.

If you don't like Windows, don't use it.

I wish you were right about it being sorted in 5 minutes but that has not been my experience calling Microsoft to get a new activation code. I find that after a couple of years my machine gets so screwed up that I want to format and start again. Following my last experience of trying to get the activation code with calls dropping out and listening to interminable messages I am reluctant to attempt a new load. Oh for the good old days when I could just load my serial number from my genuine version of Windows.

  10. You can download a program from Microsoft that will create a set of boot up floppies for you.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=55820edb-5039-4955-bcb7-4fed408ea73f&displayLang=en

However I think the previous advice should work in that you should look at the boot up sequence within your BIOS setup and move the CD to the first boot up position and then disable the other drives. Whenever I do a new install I delete any existing partitions and then create a new one which is then formatted selecting NTFS.

  11. I would like to add that I have just reported having completed my first 90 days. I am based in Bangkok and reported to the Immigration Bureau in Soi Suanplu. I downloaded the form tm47 found on this site in word format allowing you to fill in all your details so that all you need is to sign it. I arrived at the Immigration office and was in and out within 10 minutes. It could not have been easier. I also asked if I could send future forms in by post but was told as I live in Bangkok I must attend but after that sort of service I have no complaints.

  12. I have just come across this thread and some experiences echo my own about a year ago in Isetan. I was approached by a Malaysian guy and his sister (before this starts a flame war that is what they said they were). First he remarked about my shoes and asked where I got them from and then told me that his sister was going to London and could I meet her. At that point I excused myself so I am not sure where it was all leading. My shoes by the way are a nice Clarks casual and I have no connection with Clarks other than a satisfied customer.

Many thanks for that reply just what I was after. I also have a friend who gets through a lot of books and I am sure he will be pleased with your information.

  14. I tried the used bookshop in Sukhumvit and they offered me 320 baht for all of them (less than 25 baht/book) and I would rather give them away to a charity than accept that sort of offer.

A lot of people want to sell worthless junk and expect high prices.

If your books were slightly older Grisham, Clancy, Patterson type pulp fiction, than 25 baht per title is about right. That type of stuff is everywhere and goes for a dime a dozen wholesale. :o

As I mentioned in my original post they are mainly non fiction so I wasnt trying to get rid of junk. In fact one of the titles The Hitler Book just cost me 450 baht and that is one of the cheaper ones.

  16. You should be able to login to the setup page in your router. Normally they give you something like http://181.156.0.1 to type into Internet Explorer but the exact address you would have to obtain from your setup manual. If you havent set a password to access the router then you should do so. Once into the setup you should be able to find a page which gives you the mac address. I am using a Netgear router so mine will be somewhat different to yours but they all work in much the same way.
