  1. i have HSBC atm card from hong kong, but it's only good for union pay, nothing else...

i'm trying to get a cash from an atm in bangkok but it's very difficult to find the right machine...

i'm staying in sukhumvit area (soi 4 to asok), is there any machine where i get a cash from..?

    please help me...

  2. I'm coming to BKK next month for a few months and I'm looking for a place (service apartment) with good gym.

Always staying in Sukhumvit area but I don't mind staying elsewhere if it's on BTS line (walking distance).

I know there are many gyms around BKK but I'd really love to have one in my building.

Stationary bike, free weights and some machines is what I'm looking for.

Looking for a nice, quiet place, budget THB 50-80K (studio or 1-bedroom apt)

    Many thanks!!!

  3. I've heard there's a new tall tower with a bar on top. Suppose to have fantastic views. The harbor at night is stunning.

It's called ICC Tower, it's in West Kowloon above the Kowloon Airport Express station and the bar (Ozone) is on the 118th floor (take the first lift to 103rd floor (Ritz-Carlton hotel lobby), then take another lift to 118th floor. Nice place for a few drinks (you can even smoke there if you are a smoker), go after dark. Great views of the HK island and many parts of Kowloon on a clear day!

  4. I have a problem with my Sony Vaio VGN-TT46GG laptop and I need to fix it asap...

It only works in a "safe mode with networking" so I only got a small screen and videos and sound doesn't work...

I'm not good with computers so I have no idea what is the problem...

No data in my computer (only some pics) and I'm using Windows 7 pro 64-bit and Norton Internet Security and I've got both original CDs here with me just in case it's needed...

Anyone can tell me where I should go? TIA!

  5. Hopefully they will start enforcing the non smoking law as is so i can enjoy a meal somewhere without people blowing smoke in my face!

I quit going to some nice restaurants because of this.

Absolutely agreed. I stopped going to the Huntsmans Pub inside the Landmark Hotel because they refused to enforce the smoking ban in air conditioned spaces.

Complaints to the Landmark went unanswered too.

Well, now you can start going to HP again because there's no smoking allowed inside the pub anymore...

Me and my friends used to go there once a week but since the complete smoking ban we don't go anymore (yes, most of us smoke)...

That's around THB 50k every month they won't get, and that's just us...Hope all those non-smokers will make it up to them now (like they did in the UK, US, Hong Kong and other places)...cheesy.gif

  6. I'm going to Vientiene soon to apply for ED visa and since it's going to be my first time in Laos I need some info...

1.What exactly will I need? (I've got all the paperwork from my school but I don't know how many photos I'll need, what copies, and how much and what currency I can use to pay for my visa)

    2. What is the best time to go to Thai embassy and how long it usually takes to get ED visa?

    3. I'll be staying somewhere "dowtown", is it easy to get a cab to get there and how long will it take?

Thank you very much for your help!

  7. I'm also in need of some new shirts. My current shirts were made in Hong Kong at Ascot Chang tailor and they've used ALUMO 2-ply 120/2 swiss cotton.

Anybody knows if any of those recommended BKK tailors use ALUMO fabric..?

  8. I used to go to Berlin Cafe on Pattaya Tai Rd. since 1998 (my first time in Pattaya) but now they're closed with a "for rent" sign on the door.

Did they move somewhere or are they closed for good..?

    Anyone knows what's happened?

  9. Milan Station in HK sells only real stuff, both new and used. I buy Hermes Birkin bags (new) for my girlfriend there from time to time and for that you have to pay more because it's impossible to order them now in Hermes stores (some stores in some countries will still take your order but there's gonna be a lot of waiting...a year or two for sure).

I have no experience with other brands but you can check it out when you get there and compare their prices with what you'd pay at home.

In mainland China it's still 30-40% more expensive then in HK so I wouldn't go to China on a shopping trip...HK used to be cheaper too but since a lot of mainlanders are now buying stuff in HK they are charging more...

Milan Station has several locations around HK, the most convenient place to go is Tsim Sha Tsui where there are 3 stores pretty close to each other.

Many thanks...will hopefully be in HK in May biggrin.png

We're looking at a couple of hotels, are these nearby, any good?

I'm not sure about Icon (never stayed there) but Langham Place is good. You can also try Sheraton, Hyatt Regency TST and Peninsula (top HK hotel and highly recommended!), they are all good and in that area (Tsim Sha Tsui).

  11. He was one of the very few leaders who was brave enough to stand up to the bullying might of China, and declare recognition of Tibet.

That's reason enough for me to admire the man.

Funny thing in the Czech Republic...Every year on 10/3 (March) there are thousands of Tibetan flags flying from many official! buildings (even Senate)...and Chinese communists go nuts :D

His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Vaclav Havel were friends for many years and have met many times in Prague (the last time on Dec 10, just 8 days before Vaclav Havel died...)

I hope that one day Tibet will be free again but I don't think I'll live to see that :(

  12. Apparently he was best friends with Frank Zappa, which makes him cool as well as a great leader. The timing of his death was unfortunate being so close to that of the North Korean loon, so everyone was apparently distracted, similar to Mother Theresa of Calcutta who was upstaged by Princess Diana.

Frank Zappa was very popular in Czechoslovakia (in certain circles-communists hated him, of course) and Vaclav Havel liked him very much too. I remember how difficult it was to get his records at that time (illegally, of course) and how expensive it was. We used to buy his records for whatever money, made copies on tapes and sold it back. I like Frank Zappa too, I don't know if I have all of his CDs but most of it for sure. I was very lucky to see him in Prague, that concert was really something! Too bad he died so young, he was a great artist...

As for that North Korean tyrant's death, at least he's gone and now there's a (very little) chance for the change in that sad country...

  13. My condolences to you and your countrymen. You were fortunate to have him; any country would have been.

Thank you very much, Scott, it's very much appreciated. Also, I'd like to share my personal story with Vaclav Havel...

I met Vaclav Havel in Ruzyne prison in 1989. I was just 18 at that time and the communist police locked me up for selling banned music records and books on the black market. I used to buy and sell things like that since I was 16 years old and got arrested a few times before. It was usually just a beating at STB (state police) headquarters at Bartolomejska St. and a fine for me but in the Spring 1989 they put me on remand...I was already 18 so I was with the real criminals-rapists, murderers and so on. Great experience for a young, first-time offender...

One day I went to see the doctor and during that visit I met Vaclav Havel (at that time I didn't know who he was). He was watched by 4-6 screws all the time and, as a political prisoner no.1, he wasn't allowed to speak to anyone. But we said hello to each other anyway and he asked me why I was there and what have I done. I explained him my situation and he started to comfort me...he said that as a first-time offender and so young I shouldn't get more than a year with a possible early release after half. That was the only time I got to speak with this great man...And he was right, I got a year in prison. However, I didn't qualify for an early release due to the fighting (nothing actually happened to me, someone tried to bully me but I used to play rugby for Slavia Prague so it was the bully who got hurt lol) but I was eventually released on 1.1.1990 on amnesty given by the new President Vaclav Havel! Many prisoners went home at that time, all political prisoners in November and December 1989 and many others in January 1990. Some people in the Czech Republic still believe that all murderers and other hardened criminals were released but that wasn't the case, they only got one year off while others like thieves and other small-time criminals got 2-3 years off. Not a big deal actually, because people were getting many years in prison for really stupid things at that time...

I've seen him on several occasions since 1989 (I've been to all of his presidential inaugurations and I've also seen him on many rock concerts) but never got the chance to speak with him again...

Some news from the Czech Republic...Vaclav Havel will have a state funeral on Friday 23rd of December and there will be a state mourning for 3 days on 21st, 22nd and 23rd of December.

  14. I am surprised that the death of the North Korean leader has drawn so much attention, but the passing of a leader with much better credentials goes largely ignored.

    Rest In Peace.

It is ignored here on thaivisa.com which doesn't surprise me at all...

Vaclav Havel was a great man and I, as a Czech, was very proud of him.

Rest In Peace, Mr. President, and THANK YOU!

  15. "cigs are cheap in thailand anyway,so why would u bother bringing them in bulk."

Duty Free cigarettes often use tobacco from the USA (for USA brands) whereas the locally sold cigarettes of the same brands use all Thai tobacco or a mixture of Thai/USA grown tobacco. The "Made In USA" marking is appealing to many smokers because the quality of the tobacco is usually considered better than the Thai tobacco used in cigarettes sold in Thailand.

I'm not a smoker, but this is what I've been told by friends who do smoke. jap.gif

Your friends are right. I smoke red Marlboro and it taste horrible here in Thailand. I don't know what tobacco they use as it's made in Philippines but it's no good. The worst tasting Marlboro ever, even when it was made in Malaysia some years back...

Since I'm from Europe I like the European-made Marlboro the best (no matter what country) and US-made Marlboros are good too. I don't care how much it cost but I want the good stuff.

I used to bring more than one carton and never got caught but since they started with those crazy fines (plus confiscation) I only bring what is allowed. I don't want to give any Somchai any chance to bully me...

Luckily I mostly come to Thailand just for a few days now so one carton is enough for me...
