I can see the EU being more grown up and pragmatic about it retaliating by imposing tariffs where it would hurt America the most while at the same time minimising the effects on the EU citizens. We all worry from time to time the secret is how you deal with it. Can you do anything about it if yes then do it. If no then forget it and get on with life and stop worrying. We all die that is the only certainly we have in life the older you get the less important it becomes. Worrying about something without doing anything about it achieves nothing positive.

Just a thought but perhaps if the country that made life unbearable for another countries citizens by bombing missile strikes etc. were made to acept their refugees it might stop them in the first place.

When I was young there was no vaccine and nearly every child caught measles at some point, I had it as did my brothers and sister I remember my mum covering me in calamine lotion because it itched like hell. We didnt die and all recovered fully with no problems with the added bonus that we now had immunity. Our next door neighbours children 3 girls also got measles they all recovered and didn't die but tragically one of the girls lost her sight went completely blind. Measles is very contagious and can have life changing consequences or even death it is not very wise to be complacent simply because it is rarely seen these days, the fact that it is rarely seen is entirely down to the vaccination program the same as smallpox that has now been completely eliminated worldwide entirely due to vaccines another one I remember is polio rarely seen these days at least in 1st world countries again another successs for a vaccine. I made dam sure all my children were vaccinated.

Could you not try it for a few months maybe get a winter let in the South West Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall. There are a lot of holiday apartments and houses that may give you a decent price for a few months out of season, that would give you a chance to see if you really want to move back it would also let you look for something more permanent and register with a doctor, start building a credit score get on the electoral register get your pension up to date even get pension credit if applicable. Maybe even go to the local council when the lease is up and tell them you are about to be made homeless I may be wrong but I think they have to find accommodation for anyone about to be made homeless if you were lucky you could possibly get a council property which would alleviate your concern about the UK rental market. I live on the sw coast now and like do a bit of sea fishing I can't remember the last time a bought fish in a shop and there are plenty of very cheap flights to Europe Spain, Portugal, Malta, Canary Islands, Morocco, Balearic Islands, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey etc. from local airports Bristol, Exeter, Bournemouth if you fancy a trip for a few days or weeks some are as little as £30 return. If its any help I'm pushing 80 and moving back was one of my better ideas I don't regret it.
