  1. In case I missed it in this thread.

Those who bought the official Thai version of the phone, can you please confirm if the phone has all 4 frequency's for 3G.

Yes, I am confused too. I saw one at True Big C. Ratchada and the staff there insisted that I could NOT use AIS simcard. The price 18,900 baht was with a True package. If I didn't want the package it would cost "considerably more".

I said that of course I could use AIS simcard but maybe not 3G. The staff seemed to disagree with each other and no one could actually give me an answer.

I'm off to AIS Paragon tomorrow.

  2. I personally know two Thai girls who have fallen for this type of scam. One actually borrowed about 50,000 baht and sent it to some bank account. I managed to stop the other one from sending anything.

In another situation, which I am sure is a scam, another Thai girl I know who is a Muslim has met a young Nigerian man. She says he's polite, rich and very handsome. He wants to marry a Thai Muslim and start up a business.

I don't know what his game is but I have warned her to stay clear of him. She is madly in love with him and won't listen to me. I just hope that she wakes up at some point before being hurt.

Of course I could be wrong and he is a legitimate guy.

  3. With a Thai Wife he can get a Marriage extension with lower requirements.

    (6) In case of marriage with a Thai lady, the husband who is an alien must have an average annual income of not less than 40,000 baht per month or a money deposit in a local Thai bank of not less than 400,000 baht for the past 2 months for expenses within a year.

So 400,000 in the bank will do it?

He doesn't have an income of 40,000 baht now (teacher at a university) so it will be impossible to have that amount of income after retirement.

  4. A good friend of mine has lived and worked in Thailand since graduating in England. Thailand is his life. He has a Thai wife and 2 children here. Now it's time for him to retire but he doesn't meet the standard requirements of 800,000 baht in the bank and 60,000 baht income a month from abroad. He's never worked in any other country.

What does he have to do to get a retirement visa?

I have searched high and low for an answer to this question.

Surely some of you guys are in the same situation.

    Thanks for any advice.

  5. Corruption Scandal Threatens FAT President

Many leading international press agencies have implicated the President of the Football Association of Thailand, in the 2018 FIFA World Cup bid corruption scandal.

According to reports by many leading international press agencies, including Reuters and BBC, the former President of the English Football Association Lord David Triesman has claimed that at least four FIFA executive committee members have accepted bribes to vote for England in the 2018 World Cup bid.

However, England was eliminated during the first round of voting, and the right to host the World Cup was eventually awarded to Russia.

President of the Football Association of Thailand Worawee Makudi is among those implicated in the corruption scandal by Triesman.

On May 6, Worawee controversially called off the Thai FA presidential election.

Triesman has made an allegation that Worawee agreed to vote for England in exchange for the broadcasting rights of the now-canceled friendly fixture between Thailand and England.

Triesman claimed that many FIFA executive committee members have taken part in immoral and unethical activities.

Worawee has been in Qatar since May 8 to negotiate with the President of the Asian Football Confederation Mohamed Bin Hammam on the 2012 Olympics ban imposed on the Thai National Football Team for fielding a suspended player in the first preliminary round.

Just heard from a Thai friend that Makudi has been cleared of all charges. It was apparently in the Thai newspapers.

I must admit I haven't seen anything in the British press.

  6. I am sure it's the heat.

Get away to the beach or countryside for a few days and you will feel much better. I always feel sleepy and tired in Bangkok until I come home, take a shower and sit in the air con.

I am beginning to understand why when you ask Thais "what are you hobbies?" they always reply "sleep"

"What did you do at the weekend?" .... "sleep".

  7. As net means 'part of the whole' I would assume that it doesn't include service and vat.

Yes, that's what I thought but ask any Thai... "Net" includes VAT and service.

If it isn't "Net" then they write ++.

I have discussed this many times with Thais

    Confused?

  8. Also posted this in a related SGS2 thread...

I have seen some posts on Thai forums today talking about a price of 18,900 for this phone, from True, DTAC and AIS, along with price-reduced data plans. Up until today most expected the price to be 22,900 so this new price has everyone gasping. There is a lot of pent-up demand for this phone, and the rumors are flying, so this could be another one.

Any idea what the phone will cost "off contract", when just buying the phone without contract that is. Any more rumours about release date?

It has been released in England now and costs 528 pounds (approx 25800 baht). Maybe we are looking at a similar price here.

  9. "Automatic passport inspection" sounds good but if the "automatic parking ticket dispensers" are anything to go by it will be a complete waste of money.

Thais don't seem to trust automation too much.

Go into a car park where they have these machines and there is a guy standing there pressing the button for you, taking out the ticket and handing it to you.

Buy clothes in a store and the whole transaction is scanned in but they still write details in a book.

At the university library when we borrow books the bar code is sent through a scanner and the loan is registered. A small receipt is printed out. Still the books are stamped in 2 places with a return date.

When I ask why the need for double control all I can get is " helps employment".

So I can imagine that you'll have to hand the passport to some guy who will browse through every page of the passport (that's what happens when I ask someone to copy a page from my passport), turn it upside down and eventually process the passport.

  10. Old story or not.

In today's Bangkok Post there is an article on Yingluck where she says "I can make any decision by myself and he (Thaksin) has not given any orders". "However, I am open to Thaksin's or anyone's good ideas which benefit the people and the country".

Uhm... so maybe she will make the less important decisions and her brother will give her political suggestions which she will then "decide" and implement.

  11. DTAC sent me an sms on Sunday 22 May saying there are no problems at their end.

On Monday morning, another caller couldn't reach me.

It must be my phone, I guess.

By the way, this thread is about receiving calls on mobile phones, it is not about mobile internet. Thank you. :jap:

Had dinner with a friend last night who has AIS. Another at dinner also has AIS. They had a 4 hour gap in one of them sending to the other a SMS. I have dtac and so at dinner sent a sms to one of them. Received in 2 minutes. He said "It must be my phone, I guess" also.

Could it have to do with companies adding equipment to handle 3G?

By the way, this thread is about receiving calls on mobile phones, it is not about mobile internet inter-/intra-SP SMS delivery. Thank you.

I've had quite a few problems recently where people haven't been able to connect to me. It was as if my phone had been turned off. There was a clear signal on my phone but when I tried to make a call I got a "connection error" message.

I thought it was my phone and was prepared to go to Nokia. Anyway 4 hours later I received several SMS's that people had tried to call me. After that I didn't have problems.

  12. I discussed this topic with my friend last night.

Apparently a colleague left her company to start his own business selling artificial flowers. My friend is the purchasing manager of the company and she told me that she now buys his products as gifts to suppliers "even though they are not the best available". When I asked her why she did that she replied "gren jai". "To help him with his business". She then told me that the company pays more for his products per month than he received in salary!!!! TIT.

Another example she gave me was the fact that she bought some kind of insurance from her friend to the tune of several hundred thousand baht over a few years. It wasn't even a form of saving like most insurances.

I think Thai people find it very difficult to say no to friends and people in less fortunate situations.

  13. why should they learn english? this is Thailand for god's sake. How hard is it for a tourist to have the name of their hotel or wherever written down in thai for the taxi driver?

Doesn't always work. A friend of mine had a business card (in Thai and English ) from a hotel near Suvarnaphumi Airport. He wanted to go to the hotel and check out before his flight to England. He had a good 3 hours to do this.

We were on Sukhumvit and asked about 6 taxis if they knew this hotel. Of course not one of them knew it. Finally one taxi driver said he knew it and would take my friend there. A good hour and 15 minutes later I had my friend on the phone telling me the taxi driver was hopelessly lost. I told him to call the hotel and let them talk to the taxi driver. Apparently they were somewhere down Srinakarin Road far from the hotel.

Taxi drivers often say yes to a destination without knowing where it is.

  14. Does anyone know what happened on the bTS today at about 9.30 am.

I arrived at BTS Asoke at 9.45 only to find all the ticket offices closed and red tape across all the entrances. There were many people waiting to get in and I actually met my friend there. He told me he had been waiting 30 minutes to get through the gates.

The skytrains appeared to be running as many people were getting off at Asoke. I ended up paying 130 baht to take a motorbike to On Nut as I was in a real hurry.

I've searched everywhere but can't find any information.

  15. Too many good things here:

As for the OP, there was a report the other day that Thaksin's overseas mining and other investments weren't doing so good... Must be looking to get into the tablets business, instead...

But I have a better alternative: Instead of providing tablets that would be largely useless to those who most need them, how about providing a TRAINED TEACHER in each classroom who hasn't bought their degree from some bogus university.... Ohh, right, no kickbacks on that...

    As for the phones girl:

--just because she's happily married and a multimillionaire, that doesn't mean she can't also have 5 farang boyfriends on the hook... If she's a hottie, that is..

--and, how did she get to be a "multi-millionaire" if she doesn't know how to use a mobile phone...

--But more importantly, I've never met any Thai woman who doesn't know very well how to use whatever fancy mobile phone they may possess.... They may not know a laptop from a llama....but mobile phones they know...

    Sounds a bit strange...

Believe me she doesn't know how to use any functions other than messaging and calls. cannot add names to address book.

Rich.... born into it. Runs her own company. Investments everywhere (corruption too). Pays everyone to do things for her. She;s a real bitch as a boss but a good friend.

  16. He'd be better off giving them a cheap mobile phone each.

Thais are obsessed with mobile phones they can't get enough of them. I know one girl who has 2 Iphone 4's and 3 BB's!!!!

and very likely 5 farang boyfriends who bought them for her........

I forgot to mention she has an Ipad, 2 Mac laptops.

It's amazing how you guys have a one track mind and class all girls as being like that.

No, she is a friend of my wife. She is a multimillionaire and happily married. She just hasn't a clue how to use the phones.

  17. We had some kind of Infrared rejecting film put on our windows and it helped reduce the temperature a little but not a lot.

The air conditioners seemed to take an hour or more to have any real cooling effect. We then placed some kind of thin microfibre with aluminium foil attached to it in the loft. That had immediate effects. The room cooled down within minutes and the electricity bill has also fallen considerably.

This same fibre comes in a paintable version that can be attached to the inner wall which could be a solution if you live in a condo.

I am sorry but I can't remember the brand name right now.

  18. I haven't read all the posts thoroughly but having skimmed through I haven't seen anyone mention the Culture Ministry's website.

I saw in the newspaper this morning a picture of topless women on the Culture Ministry's website had been removed "after speculation that it may have influenced the girls".

Do these people really believe that these young girls looked at that website and then decided to dance topless?

If the website is anything to go by then going topless is a part of Thai culture.
