I'd like amend my last post, just came back from Rimping Star Ave. location looking for ricotta cheese, after asking many of the staff a number of times and not getting much more than a blank stare I asked for the manager who had a wild look in her eyes and was jumping around with a cell phone to each ear going in and out of the store acting like a crazy kid. She finally got the two girls from the pharmacy next door who proceeded to put "ricotta" into their phone looking for a Thai translation. They just wouldn't believe me that there isn't one and that it was a kind of cheese, I left after they kept on searching, I assume they are still staring at their phones.

Not to hijack this post but anyone know where to get ricotta, went to 4 stores today which might carry and none did.

Any luck on that "ricotta" JC?

I found some Italian ricotta by Waitrose at Tops, Central Festival, 169 baht for 350 gms. I didn't buy it as tomorrow will do a wider search.

    It's for lasagne.

I took the recommendation of one TV member and had a local restaurant make me some. It worked well in the lasagne but since I had to order it and pickup etc wasn't an ideal situation. I'm planning on another lasagna this weekend and plan on searching again today so if you are successful please share!

Yes I was successful, got 2 tubs from Makro, Hang Dong. They said there were only 2 tubs left though, that was Thursday afternoon.

    Turned out great.

  2. It would be bizarre not to give it to the other kinds of non immigrant visa holders too at least.

I have an an "O" visa, yes they accept "OA","B", etc, as long as it's a non imm.

Tourist visa's are a no go.

I always assumed Thailand was like the UK, EU, USA, AUS etc etc; tourists can rent vehicles if they have a valid license from their own country. It's only when they stay beyond a time of tourism that they require a license as if they were residents, 1 to 6 month cut off normally.

Otherwise how can all the car rental companies such as Hertz and Budget etc be operating here? I doubt they would be here if not legally sound.

You won't be renting a car without a International drivers licence in Australia, i would assume US, UK would be similar.

There are many dodgy operators here for sure, and i tell you now, if you are in an accident without an international or Thai licence you have "zero" insurance cover in court.

  3. There really seems to be a lack of awareness combined with a lack of common sense.

Put these two together with a motor vehicle that they can't handle, and you've the recipe for disaster.

Fortunately for them, they drive very slowly. Unfortunately for the rest of us on the road, we have no

clue what they are going to do next, and it often turns out to be something we would never expect,

such as stopping in the middle of traffic, two bikes abreast, opening a map and discussing where they should go.

The other drivers on the road find themselves swerving to avoid them, and crash into other cars and other people

while the Chinese tourists are completely oblivious to the fact that they've just cause another accident.

Thais are not the very best drivers, and neither are we foreigners. But I've NEVER seen us stop in the middle

of traffic and open a map. I've never seen us in a group of 4-6 bikes stop and block the entrance to a parking area

while a line of cars and bike pile up waiting to get in.

As I said, there really seems to be a lack of awareness combined with a lack of common sense.

I wonder how it is everyone is convinced it's Chinese riders.

I've seen Thai's do things that are beyond comprehension, and that's most days.

Foreigners that have been here awhile tend to "monkey see, monkey do" as well. They're not much better.

Common sense is not so common here. Sadly.

  4. This is assuming you have a non immigrant or business visa. You won't get one without that.

have they changed the rules on that? Before they'd still give the 1 year temporary, even on an exempt stamp, but not the 5 year.

Sent from my iPhone using ThaiVisa app

I'm still very interested to know about this.

I got both my temporary car and bike license 3 years ago and have renewed it twice since, all 3 times I had VE stamps.

I'm very interested to know if they have now limited this to only non-imm visas.

As far as i know you need a non immigrant O type visa. It says it in the list of requirements they hand out downstairs.

  5. Bottled water is the biggest scam ever, and it is more profitable for Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestle, etc, etc that its traditional products....I grow up in Buenos Aires and lived there until 1970 drinking tap water from the city system. That water was extracted from the Rio de la Plata, the only water supply available, and treated with chemicals before going into the city pipes. The pumps towers, on the river, 20 meter away from " La Costanera", the riverside road, were sorrounded by feces and "debris" from the city sewers. Water tasted very bad, but used directly from the faucet. No problems at all. Until the late 80's that was normal to me and people from most South American countries.....until I moved to the US and I has to accept the corporate "brain wash" . Some people now are even afraid to drink rain and underground water. The problem is that we were also "body washed", after so many years drinking bottled "clean" water..Tap water may contains common bacterias that our bodies now will need to fight and absorv again.

Who will take the risk? I will...but I am an "alien"...

    Absolute rubbish.

Bottled mineral water the safest bet, Minere or Aqua brands are best as they still have minerals left, Nestle , Singha and others have all that "boiled out".

Just use common sense and don't leave the bottles in the sun, recycle, etc.

    It's not rocket science.

But saying tap water is safe to drink here is bordering on madness.

Whilst this thread is back--'Up and Running'--does anyone know what the current price for Male Health Test screening is--are they offering any discounts, at the moment?

I just had the "full monty" check up at Ram and it was 3,700.

    Did that include ultra sound?

Never had an ultrasound in a medical, never a requirement for offshore medical, unless your pregnant i guess.

    Medical exam

    Audiogram

    Eye test

    Chest x-ray

    Vitalograph

    ECG

That's about it. 3.5 hours, takes 90 minutes in Singapore. But to be expected here.

DaamNaam, at the conclusion of the full monty were you examined at all by a doctor?

I had one at Ram and the doctor barely glanced at me when he sat at the desk and seemed to read the printouts.

    Much more thorough at Raj.

4 different doctors, a full Panamanian seamans / offshore medical.

    6,000-8,000 baht in Bangkok.

  8. Go early, 8am.

    You'll need everything photocopied.

And yes, you will need your drivers licence from wherever you came from, hopefully its in English or you may need it translated. My Australian one was fine.

This is assuming you have a non immigrant or business visa. You won't get one without that.

But you knew that already cause it's on the list of things you need.

    Things you'll need with copies

    • Main page passport.
    • Visa page passport.
    • Last entry stamp and TM card.
    • Proof of residence (work permit, yellow tabien ban, or certificate of residence from your embassy or Thai Immigration).
    • Medical certificate (available at almost any medical centre)
    • Your current DL & International Drivers Permit (IDP), if you have them.

If you’re going for both motorcycle and car, take two copies of each.

Makro Hang Dong offers excellent ricotta from Del Casaro in the deli case at the front of the store.  Also, I believe that Da Cheeso makes it, too but I've never tried it.  Usuallly, their fresh cheeses are excellent. The aged ones, not so much.

Thanks for the heads up. That should save me some time tomorrow. Much appreciated.

  11. This place is well worth a visit in Doi Saket.

A bit hard to find first time though.

Great for pork knuckle and German style sausages.

    http://www.chiangmainews.com/foodguide/foodcomments.php?id=304&readonly

G&M is at BoSang, not Doi Saket.

If you gonna go that far, might as well start listing all the eating places from the moat to Mae Rim.

    It's listed as Doi Saket.

Unless you want to start being pedantic about it.

Just trying to let the OP know of a decent restaurant in his / her area.

    Go pick on someone else.
