  1. My baby was given Vit K on the first day and that's all.

As per the birth plan that was given to the doctor no vaccines were given until 2 weeks after birth. No hassles and no arguments by anyone at the hospital - Sripat private in Chiang Mai. They basically let us do it our way and I followed the nurses everywhere they took my baby to get weighed etc.

For the record we're not married either.

  2. Now everyone's a doctor!

    Go and get diagnosed.!!!!!!!!

If you are to weak to go, then pay for a doc to come to see you.

If you have a viral infection, antibiotics will do NOTHING

If it is dengue you just have to sit it out. (paracetamol and water)

If it is food poisoning get a doctor to confirm this - they need to decide if antibiotics are needed. Giving the wrong kind will achieve nothing.

If you are shitting a lot you will get dehydrated and things could get very serious - drink lots of fluids to compensate for the fluid coming out the other end.

    GET A DOCTOR!!!

I agree. You need a medical diagnosis.

If you have dengue virus then antibiotics do nothing for viruses but antibiotics will kill your good gut flora which can make your recovery worse. Imodium isn't always the best thing in my "I'm not a doctor" opinion either because it can block you up when your body may be trying to expel for your own good.

Get some electrolytes too. Cheap from the pharmacy.

But as has been said get to a doctor.

  3. When I was there several years ago there was cable TV with English channels but no HBO. The internet is about the same as other serviced apartments I've stayed in, it was always pretty stable but slow which is normal considering that the whole floor uses the same connection. The Thai eatery next door "Nu's place" is awesome and it's easy access to Thanin market. Their kitchen rooms could do with a refurbish (from when I was there last) but in general it is a good place and the staff are helpful and friendly.

These things are dangerously good when fresh.

  5. For a while I was noticing (and hearing from other posters) that some AEON atms were charging fees while others weren't and read this on their site today:

AEON Thana Sinsap (Thailand) Public Company Limited (AEONTS) would like to inform that cash withdrawal transaction on electronic cards issued by foreign banks at AEON’s ATM will be imposed 150 THB of access fee per transaction and 20 THB per transaction for all electronic cards issued by card issuer companies in Thailand.

So I guess the party is over?

  6. I don't like McDonalds and prefer BK.

I wasn't cpmplaining about the price but the poor service.

For the amount that you pay for a burger at BK you expect top quality.

Unfortunately these "meals" are pre prepared and go cold and the fries soggy.

I've never had "top quality" from Burger King anywhere. As for the airport relative to all the "restaurant/cafes" that serve slop the best meal I can find is Pizza company. At least the pizza is cooked in an oven and hot. This says more about the low level of "food" served everywhere else at the airport.

  7. There are a few bigger gaming cafes near Thanin Market which tend to be fast. The smaller internet cafes that seem to be used mainly for email etc probably don't have as strong a connection as these ones where people play online for hours at a time. There may be other gaming cafes around, I only know of these ones because I used to pass them daily.

If you haven't tried jdownloader.org/ you may have more luck with the resumes if the connection breaks too.

  8. My experience of second hand shops in my early days here in Thailand is that buying second hand is no bargain. Almost the same price to buy new. Even folks selling up and leaving Thailand expect quite unrealistic prices. My rule of thumb is that once you buy some piece of household items then it's worth half the price you paid if you want to sell the next year. Mind you a lot of folks are shocked when I tell them that sad.png

I've had similar experiences and some even want to charge more than what I'd pay new.

  9. Find another stall to buy your bananas from and make sure to have the correct change. Then everyday walk past the stall that ripped you off while carrying your bag of bananas. May be something will click that she lost a return customer over 30 baht.

After you frequent the other stall long enough I doubt they will try to rip you off either as they will know as a regular and/or not want to lose your repeat business.

My experience in Thailand markets is that no matter how hard the haggling that once a deal is struck I'm always given my correct change. I have had 2 issues of being short changed but in supermarkets and these were almost immediately remedied when I turned around and opened my mouth about to speak. Before a word was uttered 100 baht was given to me.

  10. I'm on an Australian passport and the last time I was in Vietnam I got myself a 1 month tourist visa prior to arrival. If you want the "visa on arrival" you still need to apply for it and bring the paperwork before you get there. A few Aussies I met thought there was a 30 day on arrival and were turned back. If you have time get a visa before you arrive as it saves you queuing up at a window waiting with anywhere from 20-50 other people. I did it once and was waiting for over an hour. Every time I fly into HCMC now I look at the people herded around that window and am glad that I arranged for my visa prior to arrival and I'm generally out and in a taxi in 10 minutes or less.

  11. I'm pretty sure that unless you cancel they'll keep you on that plan even when there are plans going for 100 baht/month for 20Mb. Their philosophy is if you're willing to pay it they're willing to take your money. I'm in Chiang Mai so can't comment on 3BB speeds in Pattaya but I've been happier with the service/speed I get here than with what I had back home.

  12. Thais are still struggling to learn Thai

Naaaah. Protectionism and nationalist pride have served Thais well over the years. Much better to do nothing. Even learning English would be a sign of weakness. It will all pass over eventually, then Thais can continue as they always have...

Admitting weakness is something that Vietnamese as a generalized whole don't seem to have a problem with. When I was there in 1999 I made friends with many who would talk about how they needed to work hard to catch up with the rest of the world economically. No problem acknowledging where they were weak and working hard on solutions. The speed at which they have accelerated since then is amazing. Their work and study ethic is strong.

While I wouldn't be surprised if some enterprising Vietnamese choose to study Thai as a way to do business with Thailand, English is clearly going to be the first choice. Thai would be a micro-niche choice.
