  1. I bought my laptops in Australia and the only recommended where Toshiba and Asus. I got the Asus my wife got the Toshiba. Both have excellent warranties which is good because the monitor on the Toshiba was about to go in under a year. They fixed it in Bangkok and had it back to me in a week after telling me it would take 3 so I was happy with that and no problems since. The Asus has had some motherboard problems that caused overheating (hovering at 90-100 C) and Goodspeeed in Chiang Mai fixed it in a week. No problems with either since then so far.

I've heard that Acer in Thailand is better than in Australia but this is just random commentary by IT guys I know here. Interestingly they are from Europe so perhaps Acer is built better in some parts of the world including Europe. In Australia Acer is considered by most I was as about as useful as used toilet paper.

My wife decided she wanted an Apple Airbook about a year ago. I like it but not as much as my Asus (though my Asus is fully specced out and cost about double the price). If I was going to change over to Apple I'd be happy with the Pro or Retina though. Gotta say that for portability the Airbook is awesome. I'm lugging my Asus in a separate bag while my wife just puts hers in her handbag.

If I didn't travel so much I'd be going with a desktop. So much easier and cheaper to upgrade. I'm also a bit envious of my friend's water cooling system that allows him to massively overclock while maintaining an average temp of 14 C.

  2. ^Everything is over-priced there, always has been; a lot more expensive then new, especially given the sales at many large stores. Never, ever buy used electronics or refrigerators, unless you enjoy life on the wilde side....

I bought exactly the same baby stuff from Robinsons and Central for less than what people wanted on that newsletter for goods that were 3-4 years old.

  3. iherb.com if sending direct to Thailand seems to be the best so far. If a friend/family is come over then swansonvitamins.com are a bit cheaper on a lot of their stuff. They usually use Fedex though and I used to get a 50% added tax if sent direct to Thailand. They charged a similar percentage to my friend in London and father in law in France. For some reason there has never been any added tax when sent to my home in Australia. Obviously as a US company there would be tax issues there either.

  4. I have a guest here who has run out of albuterol tablets which he uses for asthma. I wasn't aware that it even came in tablet form as I've only known of the ventolin inhaler but the tablets is what he is used to so he would prefer it over the inhaler. Is this something that is available at a pharmacy here or does he need to go to the hospital?

  5. For a relatively short period of time (up to 2 weeks) I'd be willing to use high strength deet but for day to day living (Chiang Mai city area) I use citronella when I'm out. It's kept me bite free for 3 years now. I had dengue just over 3 years ago and was lathering on the deet daily for a while but after prolonged use I started having unpleasant reactions to it. ie. it felt like it was penetrating the surface of the skin. This was just with the weak stuff 15-20%.

  6. Rudd looks upbeat, healthy , positive and gives a good speech

You've listed his main strengths, so I'll list his weaknesses.

He is a narcissistic, vindictive, mendacious, hypocritical and petty control freak whose policy initiatives are entirely driven by his lifelong agenda of personal self-aggrandisement.

I thought you were going to list his weaknesses?

  7. Thanks for updating this thread. I used to get my vitamins from swansons (excellent for Oz not good for Thailand with more than 100% duty charges) shipped to a friend or family member in Australia then have them bring it over but this is a lot more convenient for all involved.

  8. I would avoid any and all blood thinners if I had dengue. I don't know much about warfarin but avoid aspirin and iboprofen. I was on paracetamol at the hospital and they also tried to give me a bunch of other stuff like antibiotics and alprazolam among other things all of which I googled and didn't take.

A friend brought me vitamin k2 which was really helpful as I had the hemorrhagic form.

Then even when I was out of the hospital for a month I gave away all my supplements that had any blood thinning effects (even mild ones) because I'd feel a mild dengue rash coming on when I took them.

  9. Yeah some b... volunteered for me without my consent once and I wouldn't like to get it again.

Dengue is so bad that I was happy the first year I experienced smoky season because the smoke reduced the mosquitoes around my house significantly. That's saying something considering I hate smoky season but dengue is or can be bad bad bad. Some people get it "easy" and just sleep for 4 days with a fever but the hemorrhagic fever is like the movie "Carrie" where blood is coming out of the eyes, ears, nose, every orifice. Yeah I know it's a gruesome visual but hopefully it makes people wear the spray, use the nets, turn on the fans, get the bug spray or whatever you can do to not get bitten.

  10. I don't mind Air Asia but now that they fly to Don Muang I always fly Bangkok Air so that I can get my connecting flight without any additional hassle. If I was just flying domestic then no problem with AIr Asia but Bangkok Air is superior and generally the prices are similar anyway.

Some connecting AA international flights do go out of Don Muang, Australia for instance, as I was informed recently by someone who flies regularly with them to Melbourne.Depends where your final destination is I guess. Will have to check it out ,as for Australia the connecting flights are very competiively priced so I have been told.

You can get some really good deals from Australia usually if you book early but I've had the odd occasion of a Qantas last minute deal that was cheaper even then when Air Asia or Jetstar have specials. Never seen that again though. It was almost like someone stuffed up for the day.

Generally for Australia I book 4-6 months in advance to get good prices..

  11. I've looked at the usual suspects Air Asia, Thai Airways but answers on TV are usually quicker than google these days regarding flights.

So does anyone know if there are any direct flight from CM to Yangoon or must it be via BKK?
