My feeling is that if you are in a situation where, were you Thai, you should wai someone, then as a visitor to their culture you should attempt to act ac they expect and wai.
In general though, farangs risk "over-wai -ing", a strange disorder that results in farangs all over the kingdom waiing children, plastic MacDonalds statues, doormen and rubbish collectors.

You said it, I feel so depressed now!
I still have to finish a degree here first, let alone make money.

Thanks for the inputs.
I have also found it quite irritating but haven't been able to shake it from my system just yet.
I read one comparison of it to the jungle gorillas and their system of 'Alpha male' etc.
It is truly a disheartening display of us farang if it is representative of the majority farang population in the Kingdom.

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone here was/is a part of the soc.culture.thai newsgroup? If so, what are your opinions of it?
Thanks,
Will.

Why not get the girlfriend on the case. A lot of Thai's I know spend about 5k on a house. Ok so their not up to euro standards but there's a few rooms kitchen etc. As you said you were happy to rough it.
Yea..that was obviously our first move, but as she is here in the UK with me, we had to rely on her family (not something I plan on doing much).
You'd be amazed how hard it was just to get them to repeat the word 'farang' in the context of their relative let alone help him find somewhere to stay.
Heh.

Hey, thanks guys - some useful info here.
Chingy - Yea, my gf and I are going there for just the two months, then both returning to university.
Now why didn't I think of 'bangkokproperty.com'..
I'll post if I find anything else, too.

So what's the story with thaiimmigration.com? Why should superintendent Pol.Col.Sorrapol Payoongveeranoi from Nong Khai immigration register a dot com domain with a Danish registrar (jth.net) and not use the official police.go.th site?
The domain is also 'illegally' registered, with regards to proper use of TLDs.
Also, CRSNIC has no information for that domain.

Hi All,
I am returning to the worlds best City in June (28th) for two months.
Although going with my long term thai girlfriend, I obviously will not be staying with her family. Oh no, that would be horrific for all concerned.. (weep)
So, I need to find myself some rental place. I am 20, happy to 'rough it' (although I do enjoy air con, who doesn't) and am looking to spend about 5000 Baht a month. I am happy to live in a thai condo-place (as long as the thai's would have a farang neighbour.)
So far, even with the help of my girlfriend's family in BKK we have been unable to find anything suitable. Everything I find aimed at the farang market is too expensive.
I don't mind stretching my budget if I have to, but 5k Baht a month would be swell. I'd like to be nearish to any BTS, but really do not mind which. Last time I stayed in Saphan Khwai.
So..do you brilliant folks have any good suggestions? If I cannot find anywhere easy and need to do it out there, any suggestions on where I should stay while searching?
Many thanks in advance for any replies,
- Will.

Thanks Huski - I was hating the idea of having to get to London because the main consulate didn't offer a postal service!
Thanks,
Will.

Hi All,
Age: Mid 20s
Nationality: British
Apologies if this has been answered somewhere in the forum - I failed to find it if so.
I am set to return to Thailand in June for a period of 2 months. That is to say, I have a return ticket for two months after my arrival.
Being British, I get the 30 day grace, but given the length of my stay as shown on my flight ticket, will I need to apply for a non-immigrant visa (I think that's the one) before travelling?
It would be great if I could just do it from within the country but I am concerned they may not let me in on the 30 day auto-visa knowing that I plan to stay twice as long.
Many thanks in advance..
Will.
