  1. I had a similar case this January, with a P60 showing tax-deducted from a small Standard Life cashed-in pension-policy, which I reported on the pinned pensions-thread.

I don't have a UK tax-code, as I haven't lived there for a decade, so the company were required to use an emergency PAYE-code, and deduct 20% income-tax on the 75% of the cashed-in sum which was possibly taxable.

HMRC didn't respond to my letter in February requesting an early-refund, but did send me a P800 Tax Calculation form after the year-end, showing the income & deduction. They concluded that "Your personal allowances exceed your taxable income, no tax is due", and sent me a full-refund by cheque in May.

Based on my own experience, and provided that the pension-company & HMRC are aware of your Thai address, I would therefore expect a full refund in-the-post sometime around May-2016, when they process paperwork for the current tax-year 2015-16.

But it might be worth writing to them now, and requesting an early-refund, on the grounds that you have (and expect) no other income to arise within the UK during the cuurent tax-year ?

    Good luck !

....How long did it take to get your Thai account credited once you paid the cheque in ??

Weren't they abe to just credit your Thai bank account ??

  2. Cheers. All info gratefully received.

    Try these people Brigsy...

Loads of 500X stuff at pretty reasonable prices....

After seeing the post by PP, I ordered the saddlebags (#52) from 2N Rider Shop in Udon. Their English is limited, but Khun Sunisa speaks enough English to get information (they sent lots of pictures with dimensions via Facebook) and place an order (paid before shipment into her bank account). Best communication is via their Facebook page, and they respond to messages within a few hours. The bags arrived via EMS yesterday, well packed and are exactly what I wanted -- look great. Come with rain covers and mounting straps. The bags are from a Japanese company (Komine), perhaps made in Thailand, and have a price of Y19,950 on the instruction card ($165), so 2N's price of B3,200 (plus B200 shipping to Pattaya; ($95)) seems pretty good. The bags are not as heavy as the "western" chopper type saddlebags (sold by Chiang Rai Saddlebags), but these bags have a molded design that is much better suited for a sport bike. They look great on my CTX. Recommended.

Have used them a couple of times - my missus sends them a message (in Thai) on "line" stating what i want - and they reply pretty quickly with the total price incl the postage (which is pretty reasonable) and their bank details - you transfer the dosh and they ship immediatly...

Items arrive a couple of days later, well packed...

so a big thumbs up from me....

  3. Them pictures make it look bigger than it actually is. Its a small bike ,not for a large farang ok for thai guys.

i sat on one today at the Benelli dealers in Hua Hin...

i would not describe it as a "small bike"...

i'm 5ft 10 in and it felt an ok size...

had a CB300F before and it feels a similar size to that...

at 94,900B it does seem a wedge of value against the 300F at circa 132,000b .....

in the flesh its one hell of a nice looking bike....they are going to be flying out of the showroom....

  4. Looks like this thread is turning into "mine is bigger and better than yours" oh dear.

Yes but the topic is called PCX v N Max so not really surprising.

When guys are discussing bikes/cars they are like small kids and will almost always defend their own choise very hard.

I have a 1st gen pcx150 and I have been very happy with it for what it is; a city hopper, not enough grunt for me out on the highways.

I ride a Versys 650 when going further away but it's not pratical at all downtown, so don't use it for that.

@properperson; you wrote that you are on your 4th PCX, how come you change them out all the time?

started out with one of the first 125's to come out - silver with brown plastics....

Honda then came up with the black plastics and common sense said to me that a red/black plastic one would have a much better re-sale value than a silver/brown plastics one....so part ex'd it (went for red / black plastics)....

Kept that one for a couple of years and a ltd edition matte black 150 came out....so part ex'd the red one for the matte black one....

Few weeks ago went to look at the new pearl white one with red plastics - part ex'd the matte black one ...

so 4 PCX's under my belt and still reccon they are the best small scooter out there.....

  5. Kittenkong, robblok, Properperson, Dlang (and Rimmer for removing the troll post).

Thanks to all of you for the feedback. I had never read anywhere that an hour of lessons was only 40 minutes, so now I know it is the norm then fair enough. We intended to pay for another 10 (probably 20) hours anyway, but maybe next time we will take the package that has 2 hour (1 hour 40 minute) lessons instead.

Properperson, did your wife take the 1 hour or 2 hour lessons? Did she drive the car from the office in Naklua when she got to be a better driver, or always from the 'safe' area a 10 minute drive away ? I am just curious that's all as to what is your experience, as I have no knowledge at all (apart from some googling) of the driving lesson format over here.

This driving school also offers to provide a bike for a motorbike test as well, so it seems to be very flexible in its approach.

    Thanks again for you help

She had the "2 hour per day" lessons.....

From the shop in Naklua, they took her by car to a place over the Sukomvit to some private land, where they started teaching her......once her skills improved she went onto "quiet" public roads in the area, but she never drove from the Naklua shop - the instructor did that.....

On the day of her test, she and 3 other pupils were driven from the shop to the test centre, where they took it in turns to drive the driving school round the test centre....

She also took her motorbike test the same day, so came out with 2 driving licences...

    Hope this helps....

  6. My brother in law (Thai) is a senior partner at a Law firm....

We were discussing Ferrangs having Usefruct's added to the deeds only last month....

His slant on them is that the Ferrang who takes one out is likely to think that he's bomb proof and can live in the house till he pops his clogs...

    But.....

He can't stop his ex lady (ie the owner of the house) selling the property (with the ferrang as a sitting tenant) - so when its sold to the local chapter of the hells angels throwing all night parties or maybe the local money lender who threatens to do harm to him if he stays - whats the Ferrang going to do then ??

Of if the ex rings the Police and says that he's hit her and threatened her...

Or suggests to the Police he's dealing in illegal substances and low and behold they find some when they rock round...

Brother in law reccons any lawyer worth his salts having been employed by the ex, would have the Ferrang packing his bags and running for the hills within the month....

I think i'll stick to renting....

This is a very funny post.

    You talk about law.

You then talk about breaking the Law.

    Then state your renting.

Bet your wife loves you for not giving her an asset.

just give loads of money each month, to someone out side the family.

    Top marks thumbsup.gif

i'll have a pint of whatever he's on......

  7. I'm a bit confused here....Sidhi-kep-kin/ Usufruct for what purpose...a foreigner trying to somehow secure/owning land or the house ...???

The former is illegal and the later, the best you can achieve(from my experience) is a yellow book and bliss

of nurturing a long and a great relationship.

If not.... sign it all over the the 50/50 kid!!

Our dealing with the Sattahip land office (for a Najomtien location) 8 years ago was tedious but professional... BUT take a lawyer just in case.

    8 years on - I would have rented :-), :-)

    Now I am confused.

Usufruct has nothing to do with ownership, its about right of use

    I think, yes / no ?

    I could be wrong.

YES, its only right to use. You don't try to own it and you will not own anything. Basically a right to use until your time is over (until you die).

To make it legit you should not enter the value 0 as payment into the usufruct, but a realistic price. Why? Because no one who is not insane will leave you the right to use it for free. If you follow this little rule it can be seen as the safest way of using a property until your dead. But nothing is 100%, who knows what the laws of tomorrow will be. So only invest what you are ok to loose.

  8. If not Pattaya where.

May I just suggest if you still want to live in Thailand anywhere that's at least 400km away.

That way you might stand a chance of getting a far superior life.

Having lived in Pattaya for over 8 years thinking it was the best thing since sliced bread. It finally drove me out. It wasn't only the food poisoning I got at least once a month. Or the traffic, general filth, Lack of good beach or the hold on a minute there's no mains water yet again. The final straw was a friend getting mugged and having to visit him in ICU everyday for over two weeks. Thank Buddha he's now fine.

What have I missed well nothing. Not the western food, restaurants, shopping, etc because that surprise surprise is available everywhere in Thailand.

Well there is one thing I do miss, my bank balance not going down as fast as it did there.

Have I been back in the last 8 years I have been away. Yes once if I have to every year to visit friends. Has it improved sorry not one jot.

So still stand by my original statement anywhere over 400km.

don't keep us in suspense - where did you move to ??

I wasn't keeping anyone in Suspense no one has asked.

I moved to Kamphaeng Phet some 100km passed Nakhon Sawan.

Must admit if you cant speak at least some Thai you'll be buggered, as it's the real Thailand, unlike Patts that's just a place in Thailand.

Hence we pay Thai prices and patts peeps pay tourist ones.

There's an old post about K.P.P. Has changed hotel/transport/restaurant wise since it was first put on Google many years ago, Then there wasn't even a Big C Tesco or Makro here, now there is. The rest is exactly the same. Entitled 'The town that tourism forgot'

Google it. By the globe trotting girls worth a look.

Must admit though if you think Patts is the best thing in the world you will hate it here.

No lady men or GoGo bars or Muggings come to that. You can leave the keys in your M/C and it'll still be there after you have come back from doing your shopping.

Edited must learn to spell your and not you.

No matter how you sex it up - Nakhon Nowhere has little to offer a normal westerner...

There are far nicer alternatives if you want out of Pattaya that offer Western lifestyles - Hua Hin being a prime example...

    Good luck by the way.....
