Lopburi kid's photo led to arrest and deportation of high profile Yakuza gangster for murder

Thai Rath reported that the actions of a child had led to the arrest of Shigeharu Shirai - the Japanese suspect wanted in connection with murder in Miya prefecture in 2003.

 

Shirai was a former member of the Yakuza Gumi 9.

 

Shirai had been hiding in Lopburi for 13 years. He split up with his Thai wife a few years ago but since then he liked to go and play "Maak Ruk" (Thai chess) with the locals and show off his Samurai tattoos.

 

A local child took an interest in the tattoos and posted the picture on Facebook - this soon came to the attention of the Japanese embassy who contacted the Lopburi police who arrested the suspect, said Thai Rath.

 

Yesterday amid tight security, deputy national police chief Wirachai Songmetta was on hand at departures at Suvarnabhumi airport to hand Shirai over to Kesuke Hosaka a representative of the Japanese embassy in Bangkok and a delegation of five Japanese police from Miya.

 

Wirachai was also given a list of 40,000 names of Japanese gangsters who potentially might try to come to Thailand or already be hiding in the kingdom.

 

As previously reported the list includes photos, ID numbers and other details of the Yakuza members.

How did it come to their attention? I mean technically/physically: how did a photo posted by some random Thai kid on FB ping the attention of the Japanese embassy in Thailand? Something akin to the word "blackbriar" drawing the attention of the CIA in The Bourne Ultimatum after being said on a cell phone?
