Out-going US Ambassador Glyn T Davis said today that he sees a positive future for Thailand which he hopes will be a strong, independent, free and prosperous country.

Speaking to reporters at the Defence Ministry after meeting Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, Davies said the promulgation of the two organic laws on MP elections and senate selection signals the beginning of an important process that will lead to general elections next year.

“The US and Thailand have been friends for over 200 years. We would like to see Thailand as a strong, independent, free and prosperous country,” he said, adding that he also hopes to see great political participation by Thai people.

He started out rather impressively and then over time became cowed by the very negative reactions of the usual suspects to any reference to liberty and human rights. His predecessor was braver, the excellent Kristie Kenney - also abused for her encouragement of progress towards democracy. The weird thug MIchael Yon had a particularly vicious campaign against her.Sadly Glyn Davis finishes up with this embarrassing nonsense about "positive political developments".Does he not understand that "senate selection" spits in the face of all the values the USA is supposed to stand for? But he's a decent enough guy and in the Age of Trump, the US couldn't care less about promoting civilized values.

But but Trump.......

'....a positive future for a free ,prosperous and  independent Thailand.'

What evidence is there of any of these things taking place here in LOS.

Its actually the exact opposite.

Ambassadors  open the bottom draw of their desk ,dust off the -departing country script- and away they go.

Means nothing.

Trump is right in giving amabassador appointments low priority.

Dont need them because corporations have people on the ground everywhere reporting on whats happening.

Governments are just lap dogs.

This guy is just another waste of tax payers money living in his own little world chauffeured around from cocktail party to cocktail party like so many of his colleagues assigned here.

If he wanted a “positive future” for Thailand he should have sent a “signal“ and met with Thanathorn instead.

What positive political developments is he talking about?

Is the guy on Prozac or something?

What a disgrace.

Yes, all of you foreign policy and diplomatic experts are correct. The outgoing ambassador should flame the current regime and poison the well for the incoming ambassador. Excellent strategy. I now understand why so many on TV are experts in so many subjects. Please continue with your bloviating.

Translated: Keep up the illusion of democracy, stay on our 'good side', and you won't be targeted for 'regime change' regardless of how many watches your dead friend gives you or how abysmal your UN human rights score is.
