WITH MARIJUANA now legalised for medical use, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has warned people seeking relief against growing it themselves.

“If you need marijuana for your illness, visit a doctor for a proper diagnosis or a prescription,” ONCB secretary-general Niyom Termsrisuk said recently.

He stressed that possession and use of marijuana without permission remains a crime punishable by a jail term or fine or both.

The authorities are now in the process of preparing medical marijuana for distribution through licensed sources, he said.

Prospective growers, importers and exporters of medical marijuana can submit requests for licences to the Food and Drug Administration, whose Narcotics Committee must first grant approval.

Eligible for consideration are state organisations that conduct research in or teach medicine, pharmacology, science or agriculture, and those that provide agricultural services for medical or pharmaceutical purposes.

Also eligible are pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians and practitioners of traditional Thai medicine and certified folk healers, as well as private higher-education institutes that do research on or teach medicine or pharmacology.

Legally registered community and social enterprises and agricultural cooperatives that work with or under the supervision of approved state organisations or private schools are eligible.

Also eligible are providers of international transport services, Thais living in Thailand who travel overseas with medical marijuana and other people duly authorised under ministerial regulations.

“Legal entities seeking permission must be Thai-owned and have an office in Thailand,” Niyom said, “and two-thirds of their board members must be Thai.”

"...MARIJUANA now legalised..."

What a stroke of luck!!!

While reading this article, I experienced a sudden onset of arthritis and insomnia. I'm sure the old lady who lives at the end of the village and practices traditional Thai medicine, will be happy to prescribe the "proper medicine" and supply it. Once more people learn of her expertise in healing, she should be driving that new Lexus in no time.

hmm, im skeptical. Teaching agriculture is one option to be able to grow it. There is a government run agricultural school in basically every amphur. They are already criminals. We live next to one that has taken over a 100rai of public land and they rent it out to farmers and farmnit themselves for profit not achooling at all. They let people in and do logging in the hills behind illegally and also sell off dirt not to mention burning all kinds of rubbish right now during a ban. They couldn't be trusted surely. Best skip this dangerous step and just give it to the public you selfish aholes!

What ever happened to that Dutch guy that made his money in Holland (as was legal there to grow/ sell etc but in Thailand all assets seized as money laundering and jailed! Maybe he could become a consultant

It is only legal there to sell with permission, what was proven in court that he was an unregistered and thus illegal seller of cannabis who went on to set up some coffee shops as a cover to his illegal activity and used those legal shops to launder his illegal profits.

Shut up, we’re getting weed. 😁

Seriously though, what did you expect? Everything is a monopoly here.

Today there is a news story on Khaosod news website that the Excise Department prepared a decree to collect taxes from sales of cannabis same tax rate as tobacco.

It seems to me they smelled a rat and that there could be big money to make.

Believe me, it's will be going faster than you think and we'll have licensed dispensaries

Hope you're right about that.

"...they smelled a rat..."  more likely they smelled a roach.

Soon they'll be Singha, Leo and Chang branded joints being sold in 7/11. Legal weed is just another revenue stream for the big boys and also the last paragraph sums up Thai protectionism to a tee.

Thailand is not exclusive in protectionism. Most western countries do it one way or another.

But mostly is easy to get around Thai law with a little grease
